Badminton: Fairuz out to double effort
By LIM TEIK HUAT
KUALA LUMPUR: Mohd Fairu瓃izuan Mohd Tazari will feature in the mixed doubles again with Wong Pei Tty after a lapse of two years but it is in the men抯 doubles with Mohd Zakry Latif that he will be gunning for glory in the All-England in Birmingham next week.
In the mixed doubles, Fairuzi瓃uan-Pei Tty will have to earn their place in the main draw from the qualifying tournament.
Fairuzizuan teamed up with Pei Tty to win the bronze medal at the 2006 Doha Asian Games. Their last tournament was the Asian Badminton Championships in 2007.
He has to put in extra effort on court and in physical training to sustain a high level of fitness to play dual roles but he is not complaining.
揟he South Koreans play the mixed doubles as well and it keeps them sharp, |

Back-up doubles pairs to fly the flag in Asian meet
PETALING JAYA: The back-up squad shuttlers will carry the doubles challenge for Malaysia in the Asian Championships (ABC), which will be held in Suwon, South Korea, from April 7-12.
A trial was held last week to select three men抯 pairs and those who got the nod were Lin Woon Fui-Vountus Indra Mawan, Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong and Ong Soon Hock-Khoo Chung Chiat.
Doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky said that the back-up pairs were chosen to allow the seniors to concentrate on preparing for the Sudirman Cup world mixed team championships in Guangzhou from May 7-10.
For the women抯 doubles, the top pair of Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty will also skip the Suwon championships. And Malaysia will be represented by Woon Khe Wei-Chong Sook Chin, Ng Hui Lin-Goh Liu Ying and Nairul Suhaida Abdul Latif-Amelia Anscelly in the event.
揙nly three pairs get to go for the ABC this time. I had to conduct a selection trial because we have more than three pairs in the back-up team. Those not selected will help the seniors prepare for the Sudirman Cup, |

Misbun: Taufik still packs lethal punch
KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesian Taufik Hidayat will be extra motivated to chase down his first All-England title in Birmingham next week now that he is out of the national squad.
Taufik left the national training centre in Cipayung early this month. He has been based there for more than a decade.
The 27-year-old Taufik may now be on his own but Malaysian singles coach Misbun Sidek has not discounted the chances of the former Olympic and world champion in the All-England.
揌e is still one dangerous player and his best badminton years are not over yet. How Taufik plays in the preliminary rounds will determine his fitness, |

Badminton: Lack of good sparring partners means Lee must keep on competing
PETALING JAYA: With a packed badminton calendar, China抯 top shuttlers are expected to pick and choose the tournaments to feature in this year.
But Malaysian singles coach Misbun Sidek said that world number one Lee Chong Wei does not have this luxury simply because there is now no sparring partners in the national squad good enough to match his level of play.
Misbun said that Chong We has no choice but to stick to a hectic schedule to at least maintain his standard of play. Chong Wei played in eight of the 12 Super Series tournaments last year and also featured in the Macau Open, which is a Grand Prix Gold event on the world circuit.
In total, he featured in 14 international tournaments, including the Thomas Cup qualifiers and Finals, the Asian Championships, the Beijing Olympics and the Super Series Masters Finals.
The taxing schedule took its toll on Chong Wei and he was forced out of the Hong Kong Open last December after straining his leg muscles.
In contrast, the abundance of talent in China has made it easy for Olympic champion Lin Dan to maintain his level of play.
While Lin Dan will play his first event of the year at the All-England in Birmingham next week, it is already the third for Chong Wei after the Malaysian and Korean Opens last month.
揕in Dan played in less than 10 tournaments last year but you have to look at the quality of sparring he gets back home, |

Chunlai's presence brings bad news
PETALING JAYA: The presence of top seed Bao Chunlai in the German Open starting today in Mulheim could spoil the party for Malaysian shuttlers seeking ranking points to boost their chances of making it to the World Championships in India in August.
In the absence of most of the world抯 top shuttlers, the focus this week will be on former Malaysian number one Wong Choong Hann and the four national back-up players |

Unseeded Mak-Tan could enjoy a memorable outing in Germany
PETALING JAYA: Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong are unseeded in the German Open starting today but they have the potential to rock the boat in their first European competition as a pair.
The duo almost sent formidable Danish veterans Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen packing in the first round of the Malaysian Open last month.
Hee Chun-Wee Kiong are also rated as the best among the pairs in the national back-up squad and coach Rosman Razak hoped they will spring surprises in the German Open.
Hee Chun partnered Teo Kok Siang to win the world and Asian junior boys |
