Kien Keat-Boon Heong can end Euro drought
By LIM TEIK HUAT
PETALING JAYA: Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong have received a boost to their hopes of winning their first title on European soil in almost two years with the absence of Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan from the Swiss Open in Basel from March 10-15.
Kido is still struggling to recover from a knee injury and his participation in the All-England next week with Setiawan is also in doubt.
In the Swiss Open, the top two Malaysian pairs of Kien Keat-Boon Heong and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Latif, who are seeded second and fourth respectively, will surely be out to capitalise on the absence of the world No. 2 Indonesian pair.
However, Kien Keat-Boon Heong will have to be on guard against the Chinese scratch pair of He Hanbin-Sun Junjie in a likely quarter-final match-up.
The duo should clear their first round hurdle against fellow Malaysians Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen.
Fairuzizuan-Zakry can earn a semi-final battle against Kien Keat-Boon Heong if they can turn the tables on Chinese No. 1 Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun. The duo also have a tricky opening round hurdle against Japanese No. 1 Shuichi Sakamoto-Shintaro Ikeda.
If either Malaysian pair advance to the final, they can expect to meet Danish opponents in either top seeds Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen or third seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen.
The last time Kien Keat-Boon Heong won a title in Europe was in Denmark in October, 2007.
揅ompared to the All-England, where we will be playing the Danish pair (Boe-Mogensen) if we reach the quarter-finals, this is slightly better chance for us, |

Early exit for Daren and Arif in German Open
PETALING JAYA: National back-up squad shuttlers Liew Daren and Mohd Arif Abdul Latif have virtually killed off their chances of making it to the World Championships after they were eliminated in the first round of the German Open in Mulheim yesterday.
Daren, a surprise quarter-finalist in the Malaysian Open last month, was beaten 17-21, 19-21 by Anand Pawar of India while Arif crashed to a 19-21, 22-24 defeat by Lithuania抯 Kestutis Navickas.
With the world抯 top shuttlers not in the fray except for China抯 number three Bao Chunlai, the German Open was to be the stage for Daren and Arif to improve on their world rankings.
Singles chief coach Rashid Sidek had said that they would be given opportunities to gain qualification for the world championships in Hyderabad in August.
Daren is now ranked at No. 82 while Arif is in 65th spot.
A country can have three entries in the championships but the players have to be among the top 24 in the rankings.
It would be harder for Arif and Daren as their current positions do not give them automatic entries in Super Series tournaments.
They can only be considered for the Indian Open in March and Asian Championships in South Korea in April before the qualification period ends in May.
Another back-up player, Chong Wei Feng, was lucky to avoid the same fate as Daren and Arif in the German Open.
Wei Feng, who is ranked 52nd in the world, came back from a game down to beat Chinese qualifier Du Pengyu 19-21, 21-16, 21-14 to advance to a second round match today against German Bjoern Joppien.
A win should see him facing top seed Chunlai, who needed to go the distance to beat Belgium抯 Tan Yuhan 21-9, 19-21, 21-10.
The other Malaysians joining Wei Feng in the second round are fellow back-up player Tan Chun Seang and former national players Wong Choong Hann and Yeoh Kay Bin.
Chun Seang beat Indonesian qualifier Taufiq Hidayat Akbar 21-14, 21-19 while the third seeded Choong Hann overcame Mathias Wigardt of Sweden 21-15, 21-15.
Kay Bin slogged for a 17-21, 21-15, 21-11 win over Russian Ivan Sozonoy. |

Teik Chai-Bin Shen smash into the last eight at German Open
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian men抯 doubles pair Gan Teik Chai-Tai Bin Shen checked into the quarter-finals of the German Open with a 19-21, 21-9, 21-15 win over Denmark抯 Kasper Fauset Henriksen-Christian John Skovgaard yesterday.
Teik Chai-Bin Shen continued a good run which saw them defeat seventh seeds Han San-hoon-Hwang Ji-man in the first round on Wednesday.
Today, they will take on Japanese Kenichi Hayakawa-Kenta Kazuno in the last eight. The Japanese ended the run of Malaysian back-up pair Razif-Peng Soon with a 21-23, 21-15, 21-18 win.
Teik Chai-Bin Shen will be joined in the last eight by Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong, who made it to the last eight with a convincing 21-14, 21-13 win over Germany抯 Michael Fuchs-Ingo Kindervater. They will take on second seeds Chris Adcock-Robert Blair for a place in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, the newly-forged mixed doubles combination of Mohd Razif Abdul Latif (pic)-Woon Khe Wei will not make it to the World Champion璼hips in India but they continued to show that they have what it takes to be formidable pair.
On Wednesday, the unseeded pair stunned second seeds Rasmus Bonde-Helle Nielsen of Denmark 21-16, 21-17 to keep alive hopes of reaching their first quarter-finals in an international tournament. They next face South Korean qualifiers Ko Sung-hyun-Ha Jung-eun.
Bonde-Nielsen are the third ranked Danish pair and they are currently in 14th spot in the world rankings.
The German Open is only the second tournament on the international stage for Razif-Khe Wei and they are currently without a world ranking. In their debut at the Malaysian Open, they came within a whisker of beating the Thai top pair of Sudket Prapakamol-T. Saralee in the second round.
Malaysia抯 Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying also cleared the first round but they have a tough task against Olympic champions Lee Yong-dae-Hyo Jung-lee of South Korea.
National mixed doubles coach Jeremy Gan was pleased with the progress of Razif-Khe Wei.
揥e are trying to establish solid a mixed doubles pair for the next Olympics (in London in 2012) and currently, Razif-Khe Wei have showed good potential, |
