Sabah stand-off: Slain soldier was to be engaged last month
PASIR MAS, Malaysia - Soldier Mohd Hurairah Ismail was to be engaged to his girlfriend from Kuala Krai last month but the ceremony was put off as he left to serve the country in the Ops Daulat in Sabah.
Now, the happy occasion will never take place - Prebet Mohd Hurairah, 24, was killed after a military operation in Lahad Datu. His mother fainted after receiving news yesterday that her son had been killed.
A grief-stricken Rahmah Mamat, 50, was in a daze when met at her home at Kampung Bayu Lallang, Meranti here. "The last time he was home was during Hari Raya two years ago. I received the last text messages from him on March 10 asking us to pray for his safety.
"I'm very sad as I've not seen him for so long and now, I will never see him again," a tearful Rahmah said. She did not know how her son was killed, she said, adding: "I only know he died defending the country."
Prebet Mohd Hurairah's father Ismail Hussin, 60, said he did not know what actually happened to his son as well. "All I know is that he was killed in action. His body would be brought home tomorrow (today) and I accept his death. He died for the nation," said the farmer.
The soldier was killed at Sungai Nyamok, Tanduo, Lahad Datu during a mopping up operation of the area at 10am yesterday. He said Mohd Hurairah was a cheerful person and had served at the 7th Royal Malay Regiment in Tawau the past four years.
Kelantan Umno chief Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamad visited the bereaved family to offer his condolences and handed a personal donation to help in the burial expenses. Mustapa said Mohd Hurairah's sacrifices will be remembered.
