2004 U.S.A. Martha Stewart 16th July 2004 : Martha Stewart is sentenced to five months in prison and a two year period of supervised release (to include five months of home confinement) by a federal judge in New York for conspiracy, obstruction of an agency proceeding, and making false statements to federal investigators.

Martha Stewart was sentenced by a federal judge to serve five months in prison, but the domestic diva will not have to attempt living graciously behind bars anytime soon. After her sentencing Friday, July 16, 2004, her attorneys announced they would be appealing her conviction. Stewart will continue to be free on bail until the appeals process is complete, which could take up to two years.

In a statement after Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum of U.S. District Court sentenced her to five months in prison, followed by five months in home confinement and pay a $30,000 fine, Steward made a statement in which she said she regretted that "a small personal matter" had been blown out of proportion. She expressed regret for employees of her company, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., who have been hurt by her legal entanglement.

But was it a "small personal matter?"

In March,Martha Stewart was sentenced by a federal judge to serve five months in prison, but the domestic diva will not have to attempt living graciously behind bars anytime soon.

In March, a jury found Stewart guilty of conspiracy, making false statements and obstruction of agency proceedings stemming from a sale of stock in biotech company ImClone Systems Inc. in December 2001.

Prosecutors claimed the sale order was placed after she learned from her stockbroker, Peter Bacanovic, that ImClone founder Sam Waksal was selling all his shares. Waksal allegedly starting selling off his stock after learning that federal regulators were about to turn down an anti-cancer drug created by ImClone.

Stewart, however, was never charged with insider trading, all her charges were related to covering up information concerning the stock trade and obstructing the investigation.

No Small Personal Matter for Some

Meanwhile, Waksal was sentenced to seven years in prison for insider trading, while Bacanovic was also sentenced to five months in prison on the same day Stewart was sentenced.
Some observers have commented that it was Martha herself who allowed the situation to become blown out of proportion. If she had owned up to the stock tip from her broker and cooperated with investigators from the beginning, chances are no charges would ever have been filed, they say.

When Stewart sold her ImClone stock when she did, she avoided losing about $60,000, when the stock price later tumbled. For someone who is worth millions, $60,000 may seem like a "small personal matter" indeed. But when she sold her stock, other investors bought it, and they were the shareholders who lost the $60,000 when the price later crashed.

It is unlikely that those investors considered the situation a small personal matter.

TODAY IN HISTORY - Potsdam Conference Begins

The final "Big Three" meeting between the United States, the Soviet Union, and Great Britain takes place towards the end of World War II. The decisions reached at the conference ostensibly settled many of the pressing issues between the three wartime allies, but the meeting was also marked by growing suspicion and tension between the United States and the Soviet Union.

On July 17, 1945, U.S. President Harry S. Truman, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill met in the Berlin suburb of Potsdam to discuss issues relating to postwar Europe and plans to deal with the ongoing conflict with Japan. By the time the meeting began, U.S. and British suspicions concerning Soviet intentions in Europe were intensifying. Russian armies occupied most of Eastern Europe, including nearly half of Germany, and Stalin showed no inclination to remove his control of the region. Truman, who had only been president since Franklin D. Roosevelt died three months earlier, arrived at the meeting determined to be "tough" with Stalin. He was encouraged in this course of action by news that American scientists had just successfully tested the atomic bomb. The conference soon bogged down on the issue of postwar Germany. The Soviets wanted a united but disarmed Germany, with each of the Allied powers determining the destiny of the defeated power. Truman and his advisors, fearing the spread of Soviet influence over all Germany--and, by extension, all of western Europe--fought for and achieved an agreement whereby each Allied power (including France) would administer a zone of occupation in Germany. Russian influence, therefore, would be limited to its own eastern zone. The United States also limited the amount of reparations Russia could take from Germany. Discussion of the continuing Soviet occupation of Poland floundered.

When the conference ended on August 2, 1945, matters stood much where they had before the meeting. There would be no further wartime conferences. Four days after the conference concluded, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima in Japan; on August 9, another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. World War II officially came to an end on August 14, 1945.

1981 U.S.A. Hyatt Regency Hotel Bridge Collapse Kansas City 17th July 1981 : Two sky bridges collapsed onto the lobby floor at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri killing at least 111 and injuring more than 140.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyatt_Regency_walkway_collapse

The Hyatt Regency hotel walkway collapse occurred on Friday, July 17, 1981 at the Hyatt Regency Kansas City in Kansas City, Missouri, United States where two connected walkways collapsed and plunged into the lobby holding a tea dance, killing 114 people and injuring 216 others.[1] At the time, it was the deadliest structural collapse in U.S. history, not surpassed until the collapse of the World Trade Center in 2001.[2]

On the evening of July 17, 1981, approximately 1,600 people gathered in the atrium to participate in and watch a dance competition.[5] Many people stood on the two connected walkways. At 7:05 p.m. the second-level walkway held approximately 40 people with more on the third and an additional 16 to 20 on the fourth level who watched the activities of crowd in the lobby below.[3] The fourth floor bridge was suspended directly over the second floor bridge, with the third floor walkway offset several meters from the others. Construction difficulties resulted in a subtle but flawed design change that doubled the load on the connection between the fourth floor walkway support beams and the tie rods carrying the weight of both walkways. This new design was barely adequate to support the dead load weight of the structure itself, much less the added weight of the spectators. The connection failed, and the fourth-floor walkway collapsed onto the second-floor walkway. Both walkways then fell to the lobby floor below, resulting in 111 immediate deaths and 219 injuries. Three additional victims died after being transported to hospitals, bringing the total number of deaths to 114.[6]

Difference between the design and construction of the walkway support system
The rescue operation lasted fourteen hours[7] and was performed by many emergency personnel, including crews from 34 fire trucks and EMS units, doctors from five local hospitals and construction crews with heavy equipment.[8] Dr. Joseph Waeckerle, former chief of Kansas City's emergency medical system, directed the rescue effort [1] establishing a makeshift morgue in a ground floor exhibition area,[9] using the hotel's taxicab driveway as a triage area and helping to organize the wounded by greatest need for medical care.[10] Those people who could walk were instructed to leave the hotel to simplify the rescue effort; those mortally injured were told they were going to die and were given morphine.[6] Volunteers arrived from every quarter, including construction companies and building supply stores, bringing "hydraulic jacks, acetylene torches, compressors and generators".[11]
One of the great challenges of the rescue operation was that the hotel's water pipes had been severed by falling debris, flooding the lobby and putting trapped survivors at great risk of drowning. As the pipes were connected to water tanks, not a public source, the flow could not be stopped. Mark Williams, the last person rescued alive from the rubble, spent more than nine and a half hours pinned underneath the lower skywalk, both legs pulled out of their sockets.[12] Williams nearly drowned before Kansas City's fire chief realized that the hotel's front doors were trapping the water in the lobby. On his orders, a bulldozer was sent to break through the doors, which allowed the water to pour out of the lobby and thus eliminated the danger to the trapped. Additionally, the lobby was filled with concrete dust, and visibility was poor as the emergency workers had cut the power to prevent fires.[13]
Twenty-nine people were rescued from the rubble.[14]

TODAY IN HISTORY - Nero's Rome Burns

The great fire of Rome breaks out and destroys much of the city on this day in the year 64. Despite the well-known stories, there is no evidence that the Roman emperor, Nero, either started the fire or played the fiddle while it burned. Still, he did use the disaster to further his political agenda.

The fire began in the slums of a district south of the legendary Palatine Hill. The area's homes burned very quickly and the fire spread north, fueled by high winds. During the chaos of the fire, there were reports of heavy looting. The fire ended up raging out of control for nearly three days. Three of Rome's 14 districts were completely wiped out; only four were untouched by the tremendous conflagration. Hundreds of people died in the fire and many thousands were left homeless.

Although popular legend holds that Emperor Nero fiddled while the city burned, this account is wrong on several accounts. First, the fiddle did not even exist at the time. Instead, Nero was well known for his talent on the lyre; he often composed his own music. More importantly, Nero was actually 35 miles away in Antium when the fire broke out. In fact, he let his palace be used as a shelter.

Legend has long blamed Nero for a couple of reasons. Nero did not like the aesthetics of the city and used the devastation of the fire in order to change much of it and institute new building codes throughout the city. Nero also used the fire to clamp down on the growing influence of Christians in Rome. He arrested, tortured and executed hundreds of Christians on the pretext that they had something to do with the fire.

Nadia Comaneci Became The First Gymnast to Scrore A Perfect 10 point at Montreal Olympic 1976

At the age of 14, Comăneci became one of the stars of the 1976 Summer Olympics inMontréal. During the team portion of the competition on July 18, her routine on the uneven bars was awarded a perfect ten.[19] It was the first time in modern Olympic gymnastics history that the score had ever been awarded.[20] When Omega SA, the traditional Olympics scoreboard manufacturer, asked before the 1976 games whether four digits would be necessary for gymnastics, it was told that a perfect 10.00 was not possible.[21]Nadia's perfect marks were thus displayed as 1.00 instead.[22] The crowd was at first confused, but soon understood and gave her a rousing ovation.[20] Over the course of the Olympics, Comăneci would earn six additional tens, en route to capturing the all-around, beam, and bars titles, and a bronze medal on the floor exercise. The Romanian team also placed second in the team competition, capturing silver.[23]
Comăneci was the first Romanian gymnast to win the Olympic all-around title. She also holds the record for being the youngest Olympic gymnastics all-around champion ever. With the revised age-eligibility requirements in the sport (gymnasts must now turn 16 in the calendar year to compete in the Olympics; in 1976 gymnasts had to be 14 by the first day of the competition[24]), it is currently not possible to legally break this record.

1935 U.S.A. First Parking Meter 19th July 1935 : The first parking meter in the U.S. the Park-O-Meter invented by Carlton Magee, was installed in Oklahoma City by the Dual Parking Meter Company.

Carlton Cole Magee invented the first parking meter in 1932 in response to the growing problem of parking congestion. He patented it in 1935 (US patent #2,118,318) and started the Magee-Hale Park-O-Meter Company to manufacturer his parking meters. These early parking meters were produced at factories in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma. The first was installed in 1935 in Oklahoma City. The meters were sometimes met with resistance from citizen groups; vigilantes from Alabama and Texas attempted to destroy the meters en masse.
The name Magee-Hale Park-O-Meter Company was later changed to the P.O.M. company, a trademarked name made from the initials of Park-O-Meter. In 1992, POM began marketing and selling the first fully electronic parking meter, the patented "APM" Advanced Parking Meter, with features such as a free-fall coin chute and a choice of solar or battery power.
