Long-haul budget carrier AirAsia X will be looking to lease more A340s between 2010 and 2016 as part of plans to service a few more European routes and possibly a North American destination.
On Tuesday, it inked a contract to buy 10 A350s worth more than US$2.2 billion (RM7.8 billion), with option to purchase another five. Deliveries are scheduled between 2016 and 2018.
"We expect the lease market to soften further as the Boeing 787s come on stream. It is not difficult to find A340s; it's just that we're choosy and patient, waiting to pounce on a lease only when it is very favourable," AirAsia X chief executive officer Azran Osman-rani told Business Times through e-mail yesterday.
Come 2016, the A350s will replace its A340s, of which the airline has two at present.
"The 2016 timing works because it will be the end of our current A340 lease term. The A330s will remain in our aircraft fleet, covering the Asia-Pacific region (within eight hours of flying)," Azran said.
Shares of parent company AirAsia Bhd rose four sen to close at RM1.17 yesterday as investors responded favourably to news of the purchase.
Some 4.95 million shares were traded.
Azran said that even though the A350s will need a newly-trained crew because of its next-generation cockpit, this will be offset by the huge fuel efficiency which will help lower costs.
For example, fuel burn per passenger seat on the A350 flying to London is 50 per cent lower than for the A340, he said.
The new planes will allow AirAsia X to open up European, North American and New Zealand routes.
"It will likely be used for our London route, for which we intend to have multiple daily frequencies to London by 2016.
"We also expect two to four more European destinations, two in North America (at least one on the US West Coast and another on the East Coast) and possibly some African and New Zealand options."
Azran added that AirAsia X will not have any problems financing the purchase as substantial payments for the aeroplanes will only start in 2013. The first downpayment was not substantial.
"We don't expect a material change in our cash flow from this A350 order prior to 2013. Anyway, by that time, we would have paid off a big chunk of our A330 debt. So, we should have more cash capacity for the A350s." |

New Bursa index set to spur financial stocks
Finance, betting and power stocks will be the biggest winners in terms of the jump in industry weightings in the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI, says CIMB Investment Bank
MALAYSIA'S finance stocks, along with betting and power companies, will benefit most when the Kuala Lumpur Composite Index is replaced by a new benchmark gauge next month, CIMB Investment Bank Bhd said in a report.
The three sectors will be the biggest winners in terms of the jump in industry weightings in the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI, which will be known as the FBM KLCI, the report said yesterday.
"As investors have less than three weeks to adjust their portfolios before the FBM KLCI takes effect, the impact on the market should be significant," Terence Wong, an analyst at CIMB, said in the report. "The concentration on quality could push up the new gauge, especially if foreign funds return to Malaysia in a big way," he said.
Bursa Malaysia Bhd, the country's stock exchange manager, will cut the number of companies in its Kuala Lumpur Composite Index to 30 from 102 on July 6, in the measure's biggest overhaul aimed at removing the smallest and most tightly held companies to attract investors.
The KLCI has climbed 22 per cent this year, the worst performer among Southeast Asian benchmark indices even after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who took office on April 3, announced stimulus plans valued at RM67 billion.
"While studies by the stock exchange indicate the direct impact on indexed funds will be minimal, the psychological impact could be substantial," Wong said. "In our ongoing global roadshow, investors show interest in the new index and want to know which companies stand to gain."
The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI will comprise the largest companies by market value with at least a 15 per cent free-float, which is based on the number of shares publicly available for trading.
In "rejigging" the index, the weightings in finance will increase to 34 per cent from 25 per cent while gaming will rise to 10 per cent from 6 per cent and power 11 per cent from 8 per cent, Wong said. Bank and plantation stocks will have a combined weighting of 55 per cent in the revamped index.
The three biggest stocks on the new gauge will be Bumiputra-Commerce Holdings Bhd and Malayan Banking Bhd, the country's two biggest banks, and Sime Darby Bhd, the No. 1 palm oil producer, the report said. - Bloomberg |

Technical outlook
Bursa Malaysia shares eased on profit-taking last Monday, led by lower liners falling in line with the region after the G8 finance ministers hinted that they may withdraw stimulus spending if green shoots in the global economy gain pace. The KLCI subsequently dipped from a high of 1,095.72 to close flat, but the overall market was broadly weaker.
The local market tumbled over the next three days, mirroring corrections in the region and US sparked by falling commodity prices caused by the stronger US dollar. The local blue-chip index was sold off to a two-week low of 1,052.48, the lowest since June 1, prior to a rebound on Friday after less jobless claims and improving manufacturing data from the US renewed hopes that the global recession may be nearing an end.
Among the other indices week-on-week, the FBM-EMAS Index retreated 259.22 points, or 3.5 per cent, to close at 7,098.53, while the FBM-Small Cap Index (SCI) plunged 950.72 points, or 9.5 per cent, to 9,023.90. The plunge in lower liners, with construction and property stocks related to Iskandar Malaysia leading the losses, contributed to the severe correction in the SCI.
The daily slow stochastics indicator for KLCI has levelled off at the oversold region following last week's sharp decline, while the weekly indicator hooked down from the overbought level to register a bearish divergence. The same can be said of the 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) indicator (Chart 1), while the 14-week RSI slipped below the overbought mark to trigger a sell signal.
The daily Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) trend indicator also registered a bearish divergence reading following last week's sell-off, while the weekly MACD signal line is levelling off to signal weakening uptrend. On the 14-day Directional Movement Index (DMI) trend indicator, the ADX line has turned lower for a reading of 37.21 last Friday, while the contracting +DI and -DI lines will trigger a sell signal if the index weakens further this week.
Conclusion
Daily and weekly momentum and trend indicators for the KLCI have worrying bearish divergence signals which do not bode well for short-term bulls and momentum traders this week. Conversely, the oversold daily slow stochastics will hook up for a buy signal for a potential technical rebound on further strength. Nonetheless, expect limited upside on a rebound as on the weekly chart, a bearish engulfing weekly candle has confirmed a major resistance at the 200-week SMA, which is levelling at 1,094.
Sector-wise, anticipate construction and property stocks related to Iskandar Malaysia to remain under pressure. However, oil and gas related stocks could continue to gain investors' favour given the resilient crude oil prices and the possibility of rising inflation lifting commodity prices further.
As for the downside for the KLCI this week, critical supports from the 30-day SMA at 1,052 and the rising lower Bollinger band at 1,036 must not be broken on a closing basis to maintain near-term upward momentum for the broader market. A more important retracement support is at 1,034, the 23.6 per cent Fibonacci Retracement (FR) of the uptrend from 836 pivot low of March 12 to the recent peak of 1,095.91 of June 12. A decisive breakdown below this crucial support will see more significant downside risk towards next retracement support of 38.2 per cent FR at 996. On the upside, expect immediate resistance at 1,073, next at 1,083 and then 1,090 to 1,095.
The subject expressed above is based purely on technical analysis and opinions of the writer. It is not a solicitation to buy or sell. |

KLCI futures seen dipping before staging recovery

THESAURUS :
THE Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) futures spot month contract on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives closed at 1,064 on Friday, down 26.5 points. Open interest for the week, however, jumped to 21,266 contracts.
The June contract experienced a pullback last week after a brief selldown which led it to a low of 1,052 before it staged a recovery by Friday. It was a technical correction that traders had been waiting for in the past few weeks after the market topped 1,050 in late May.
We suspect that the spot contract will ease slightly before making another attempt to take out the 1,100 level this week. The retreat last week resulted in the price momentum falling back into oversold territory briefly before landing on neutral ground.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) and the Commodity Channel Index (CCI) have strengthened with a V-shaped recovery as traders anticipating a rebound rushed in to load up. The daily Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator has also widened with the faster line falling below the signal line. This adverse signal is worrying as this is the first time a negative crossover has taken place since late April. Should both these lines diverge further this week, a more severe correction could be in store in the medium term.
The weekly chart remains intact with the exception of the appearance of a black candlestick at the tail end of the chart last week. A hinge down angle on the weekly RSI back to the neutral region reflects the damage done after the 26-point correction. Most of the signals have moved back, judging by the presence of the sellers in the market. It would not be surprising to find the June contract consolidating this week before attempting to push higher again.
As prices are slowly moving back to a range-trading pattern, there could be an increase in volatility within a discernible band. The tested range of 1,050-1,100 could act as an immediate consolidation band for the June contract.
Tactically, we may see the spot contract retreating back to test the 1,050 level this week before recovering. This support line is crucial to withhold the shortists from going on a rampage in the market. Successful recovery from here could lead it back to the 1,100 level. |

Investing is my life, says Pheim's founder
By Chong Pooi KoonPublished: 2009/06/22
Tan Chong Koay's company, Pheim Asset Management, now manages US$1.25 billion for institutional clients across the globe
MAYBE it's just a coincidence. But many fund managers who claim to be a value investor tend to appear unassuming in person. There is nothing flashy about them, unlike the global fund managers attached to the industry big-wigs.
There was no expensive tailored suit, and the office of Tan Chong Koay, 59, was low-key, functional and speaks nothing about the impressive track record of his funds or the established list of its clienteles.
His company, Pheim Asset Management, now manages US$1.25 billion (RM4.4 billion) for institutional clients across the globe, like Axa Insurance Malaysia, New Private Bank of Switzerland, Aizawa Securities of Japan, and the Norges Bank of Norway.
Its oldest customers, such as the Employees Provident Fund, has stuck with the fund manager for over a decade for the steady returns.
"It's a stamina game. There's a lot of hard work and knowledge involved," Tan said in an interview with Business Times. He used to clock almost 12 hours of work everyday, weekends included, each day covering six to seven companies whose stocks he tracked.
His home in Malaysia was set up in a condominium just across the road from the office on Jalan Sultan Ismail, to save time on traveling. Even the lunch time was spent with management of companies which he invested in.
The hardworking regime has left him with little time for any hobbies. Tan said he doesn't even read literature and 90 per cent of what he reads is probably related to work, like investment and news magazines.
"Investing is all I do, that's my whole life. I only worked one year for Chung Kiaw Bank, and then I've worked all the way on 'buy' side (of investment) for 32 years," he said.
Tan got his first job in 1976 at South East Asia Develop ment Corp, now known as Amanah Capital Partners Bhd, which owned the first unit trust company in the country. He also headed investment divisions at Arab Malaysian Merchant Bank, DG Bank-GZB (Asia) Ltd and John Govett (Asia) Pte before starting Pheim. He earned a master's degree in business administration from Western Illinois University in 1974.
"I used to analyse tin mines and plantations when I started and I found that I do well in analysis, so why switch? Might as well continue investing and investing," he said. "Very average thinking, but it works for me."
Tan was born in a small town in Kedah, a place he said had no water or power supply in those days. His father was a small businessman trading rubber, rice, sugar and distributed all sorts of sundries in the plantation estates.
Tan said he has grown up wanting to be an investment manager. "We come from a very humble family, and you got to find a way to break that," he said. |
