Malaysia down Singapore in opening tie Wednesday June 30, 2004
KUANTAN: Malaysia get off to a flying start in the inaugural Asian Schools Under-15 football championship, beating Singapore 2-0 at the MPK 1B field here yesterday.
After pinning the Lions in their own half right from the start, Malaysia opened accounts through Mohd Sahfaik Mohd Shukri in the 17th minute. Aiman Hakim Ridza Abdoh added the second in the 25th minute.
The Lions fought back gamely and had their fair share of chances but were let down by poor finishing.
Malaysia were clearly the better side with a more co-ordinated attack. But despite creating a number of goal-scoring chances, they could not add on to the tally in the second half.
With the win, Malaysia's chances of qualifying for the semi-finals from Group A look bright.
In a Group B match, Indonesia came back from a goal down to thrash Vietnam 4-1.
Vietnam stunned the Indonesians with an early ninth minute goal by Dao Ngoc Phuoc.
The Indonesians stormed back to secure the win. Rian Maruli Apriansyah was the toast of the Indonesian team after scoring all his team's four goals. He struck in the 32nd, 34th, 67th and 68th minutes to stake an early claim for the top scorer's award.
In another Group B match, South Korea also had it easy against Thailand with a convincing 3-0 win.
South Korea started the rout through Sin Ho-joon in the sixth minute before Choi Jung-hah added the second in the 15th minute. Kang Dae-ho sealed the victory in the 63rd minute.
