COMPARED to today's reality TV talents, veteran Malaysian rock band Wings would be considered jurassic.
Its members still have their distinctive 1980s mullet hairdos, although squeezing into a pair of drainpipe jeans is but a memory for this group of fathers.
But forget about retirement. As far as this 22-year-old band is concerned, it would literally take the death of a member before they call it quits for the day.
Guitarist Abdul Zamin Abdul Kadir, better known as Joe, said that he was proud that the influential band is still rocking.
'We are still around because we keep doing what we do best,' said the 40-something lead guitarist.
He doesn't think much of the new talents churned out by reality TV shows Malaysian Idol and Akademi Fantasia.
'Many of them are interested only in becoming popular, it compromises the quality of the music. When you don't have quality, how long can you last in this industry?' Joe said.
Wings will be performing in Singapore on
1 May with other rock bands like Rockvival, Yakamashii, Edge, Osairis, Greensleeves, Voltage, Steel Damage and Stygian.
The band started out in 1985 with its original line-up of lead singer Ahmad Azhar Othman (Awie), guitarist Sham Baharom, bassist Samsaidi Haji Ulong Idris (Eddie) and drummer Azmi Hashim (Black).
It released its first album Belenggu Irama (Rhythm's Shackles) in 1987. Its six albums have sold more than a million units in Malaysia.
The group went through a slew of changes - from Joe replacing guitarist Sham for the 1989 album Hukum Karma (Karma's Punishment) to Awie leaving the band in 1993 to pursue acting and a solo career.
He returned in 2003. But last year, scandal struck over his secret second marriage, and bitter divorce from first wife Arnie Nazirah Anuar. It resulted in an ugly and public custody battle for the couple's two daughters.
When asked how Awie's problems affected the band, Joe said: 'We don't let our personal lives affect the band. We are professionals.
'It was a tough time for him but that was his business, it had nothing to do with us. We don't even talk about it when we are working.'
At the concert, fans will see the band's current line-up of Eddie, Awie, Joe and Black.
Last year, Wings released an album of its live performances called Wings Alive 06. It will also be releasing a VCD of its live shows sometime this year, as well as work on a new album.
For its Singapore concert, Joe said Wings will sing its old hits like Intanku Kesepian (My Silent Diamond) and Peronda Jaket Biru (Blue Patrol Jacket) 'if that's what the fans want'.
Joe believes the band has survived for so long because its songs still strike a chord with the younger generation.
'While we may have upgraded ourselves - we now use the computers to record - our songs still appeal to the soul of the young people today.'
He revels in being called a veteran musician.
Joe said: 'I am proud of that title. We've been around for so long, we've earned it.'

SINGAPORE : The Army is holding an open house at Pasir Laba camp from this Thursday till September 3rd next week.
The event will give the public a chance to learn more about the Singapore Army's new fighting concepts and capabilities.
The entire Pasir Laba camp near Jurong will be turned into a carnival-like exhibition.
The public can view what it takes to be a soldier in the third generation Army.
Highlights include various special weapons.
Also on show will be the Army's combat vehicles, in which participants can take a ride.

Until Sunday, more than 780 vendors will be showcasing and selling their wares at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event occupies four levels there, spanning a massive 300,000 sq ft of floor space.
The exhibition is positioned as a bargain-filled one-stop shop where you can get your hands on the latest digital and electronic products at wallet-friendly prices � Comex 2007 promises to have something for every visitor.
The vast array of products includes cameras, laptops, desktops, compact cameras, digital single lens reflex cameras (DSLRs), smart phones, portable media players, printers, computer displays and high-definition television screens.
As with any large IT fair, you can expect to be awed by new gadgets, good discounts and impressive displays.
Some of the big names you will find at Comex 2007 include Acer, Apple, Canon, Epson, Fujitsu, Hewlett Packard, Lenovo, NEC, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba.
Sony is a formidable presence this year, taking up the entire concourse area on level 3.
It is showcasing a plethora of products, from the new Cyber-shot T200 digital cameras and Bravia V-Series of high-definition liquid crystal display television sets to a new range of Vaio laptops.
Its thematic pavilion will show how all its different products � from gaming and computing to mobile phones and digital imaging � can be integrated into a holistic digital lifestyle.

Last year's show attracted 678,000 visitors, who spent a total of S$35 million. This year, more than 700,000 visitors are expected to throng the halls at Suntec during the four days, spending up to S$50 million.
Don't worry about jostling with the crowd though � event organiser Eastern Directories says there will be a 4m-wide walkway in each hall, so you can comfortably stroll through the aisles to browse the gadgets.

Determined shoppers at Comex lugged home hot-ticket items

SINGAPORE: Liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs were the top item on most people's shopping list as the four-day Comex 2007 drew to a close on Sunday.
With prices hovering around $1,000 for 32-inch models, scores of shoppers were seen happily hauling their prized acquisitions out of the exhibition hall.
At the Sony booth, the Bravia LCD TV X series proved to be very popular. The $5,499 retail price for the 40-inch model did not seem to deter buyers, especially with Sony throwing in a SingTel mio TV package worth $768 or a 20-inch Bravia LCD TV ($749) to sweeten the deal.
But there was something for everyone who showed up at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre. Other items that proved to be a hit for Sony were the Vaio CR series of laptops and the newly-launched Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T200 digital camera.
Business was brisk for the 780 vendors hawking the latest tech gadgets and consumer electronics.
For Nanyang Polytechnic student Kau Boon Ping, the Lenovo booth was the place to be. He was seen taking a breather on the fourth floor, with a desktop PC and a printer in tow. "It's very crowded upstairs, but I've got what I wanted. So, right now I'm here waiting for my dad, who's probably still upstairs looking around," he said.
For others, the crowd was part of the Comex experience.
"There is a lot of excitement at this event, it adds to the fun of shopping," said an electronics manager who wanted to be known only as Mr Ho. "The notebook I bought is around market price, but of course there were free gifts like bags and thumb drives as well."
However, not everyone left the exhibition hall happy. "There were just too many people at the booths, no one was serving us," complained accounts assistant Tan Pei Yi.
The jury is still out as to whether Comex 2007's attendance and sales figures surpassed that of the last year's 678,000 visitors and $35 million in takings. Final figures are expected to be released on Monday.
Those who missed out at Comex 2007 need not fret. Sitex 2007 is just around the corner, and will be held at the Singapore Expo from Nov 29 to Dec 2. |
