KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) ended the morning session lower in line with losses across the regional bourses following lack of fresh leads after the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.32%, or 178.11 points, last Friday.
Analysts said the gloomy outlook for the US economy, and the measures taken by the US Federal Reserve to pump liquidity to arrest the subprime mortgage crisis has done little to lift investor confidence in the region.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was down 2.42% or 667.10 points to 26,896.54 points, the Shanghai A Shares Index was 1.79% lower at 4,918.50 points, Korea's Kospi slid 1.73% to 1,862.28 points, and the Singapore Straits Times Index fell 1.76% to 3,405.43 points.
At Bursa Malaysia, the KLCI fell 0.85% or 11.85 points to 1,391.56 points, continuing its losing streak for the fourth straight trading day. Losses at Genting Bhd, Maybank Bhd, Telekom Malaysia Bhd and Sime Darby Bhd erased 5.56 points off the KLCI at 12.30pm.
TA Research Securities head of research Kaladher Govindan said the first level of support for the KLCI was 1,380 points for this week, adding the strongest support would be at 1,360 points.
Trading volume on Bursa Malaysia was also thin with 370.28 million shares valued at RM620.3 million done. At midday, losers led gainers by 572 to 125.
