PETALING JAYA: Police will protect Kim Han-sol, the son of assassinated North Korean Kim Jong-nam, should he come to identify his father’s body at the Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) mortuary.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said he was not aware if Han-sol was already in Malaysia but assured that the 22-year-old would be protected.
“All he has to do is to contact Wisma Putra or the other authorities if he intends to come to Malaysia.
“We will protect him as we don’t want another death to happen here,” Nur Jazlan added.
There was a media frenzy at the KLIA2 arrival hall on Monday when word got out that Han-sol would arrive from Macau. This proved to be false.
A Special Task Force on Organised Crime (Stafoc) team was deployed overnight at the mortuary because of the high-profile nature of the case.
On the fate of the four North Korean suspects who are believed to have fled the country following Jong-nam’s assassination, Nur Jazlan said it would depend on the identification of the victim and cause of death.
“If the death was under suspicious circumstances, the police can request for the four men to be extradited to assist in investigations,” he said.
Nur Jazlan said any request for the men to be extradited would need North Korea’s cooperation.
“The question is whether North Korea will entertain us. What if they (North Korea) say they can’t find the four, then what can we do?”
Police here have requested Interpol to help trace the four. Their photographs were also published.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said no family member had yet come forward to claim Jong-nam’s body.
Khalid was refuting a report in a South Korean news portal’s Arirang that Han-sol had arrived at the HKL mortuary yesterday morning and confirmed his father’s body.
“Don’t listen to such rumours,” said Khalid when contacted yesterday.
From roughly 1994 to 2001, he was considered the heir apparent to his father.[2] In May 2001, following a failed attempt to visit Tokyo Disneyland by entering Japan with a fake passport, he was thought to have fallen out of favour with his father.
