Jab Main Chota Bacha Tha
By Gaurav Malani (IndiaFM News Bureau), November 14, 2006 - 09:49 IST

Today is November 14, birthday of Pandit. Jawaharlal Nehru and celebrated as 'Children's Day' in the country. Nehru loved kids and so his birthday is named after children. Well, who isn't touched by the innocence of a cute child?

We will introduce you to some such charming kids from Bollywood. Popular personalities whom you know quite well, but faces that you perhaps might not be able to identify at first glance. That's because we are talking of some such actors who started quite young. Started as child artists!

On the occasion of Children's Day, Gaurav Malani articulates about some such artists who debuted in Bollywood with a 'Master' or a 'Baby' prefix to their names.

Shashi Kapoor

?ere paas maa hain? - we all remember Shashi Kapoor mouthing this legendary line from Deewaar. That was in 1975. But much before that - and by that we mean 30 years back, Shashi Kapoor had made his acting debut at a tender age of 6 in Jayant Desai's Tabdir (1945). He continued working as a child artist in many mythological films (that were a regular in those times) like Bhakta Dhruva, Bhakta Gopalbhaiya, Bhakta Bilwamangal and Veer Babruwahan.

But his most noted performances as a child actor are in films like Aag (1948) and Awara (1951) where he played the role of Raj Kapoor's younger counterpart. As a child he also worked in 'Prithvi Theatre' - his father's theatre group.

Neetu Singh

Next from the Kapoor clan is Neetu Singh. But when she started as an actress she wasn't a member of the Kapoor family. She wasn't called Neetu Singh either in her debut film. Neetu Singh made her debut as 'Baby Sonia' at the age of 10 in the Mala Sinha - Biswajeet starrer 'Do Kaliyaan' (1968).

A remake of the classic Hollywood film 'The Parent Trap', 'Do Kaliyaan' gave Baby Sonia the chance to play a double role in her first film itself. She got vast scope to display her acting abilities in the role of twin sisters of diverse sensibilities - as Ganga and Jamuna. And if you though this was an itsy-bitsy child artist cameo; NO she was the title actor of the film. You have to see her melt your heart with her warm performance. After 'Do Kaliyaan', she continued as a child artist in films like Waris (1969) and Pavitra Paapi (1970) until she made her debut as an elder actress in Yaadon Ki Baarat (1973).

Jab Main Chota Bacha Tha
By Gaurav Malani (IndiaFM News Bureau), November 14, 2006 - 09:49 IST

Rishi Kapoor

The tryst of child artists with Kapoor khandaan continues with Rishi Kapoor. In 1970 Raj Kapoor wanted an actor to play his younger version in Mera Naam Joker. Obviously he couldn't cast his regular young counterpart - Shashi Kapoor as he was an established lead actor by 70s. But there wasn't any reason to worry as acting ran in the blood of Kapoors.

So Raj Kapoor cast his second son Rishi Kapoor as the young Raj Kapoor in 'Mera Naam Joker' (1970). The 18-year-old Rishi was quite plump then but it perfectly fitted the character. In one of the funny scenes from the film, he even has his pants torn during a PT class due to being an overweight boy. Rishi had sufficient footage in the film as he featured in the entire first chapter of the episodic film.

But his USP in this film could have proved a setback to him when he would have made his debut in a leading role. So Rishi lost substantial weight and debuted as the young-and-energetic hero in 'Bobby' (1973).

Sanjay Dutt

Yes, our very own Munnabhai faced the camera for the first time when he was just 12 years old. Sanjay Dutt was an item boy back then. In his father Sunil Dutt's film Reshma Aur Shera (1971), Sanjay Dutt danced in a qawalli song. And even as a child, his dance steps had the trademark Sanjay Dutt impact.

Now you know he isn't called Sanju 'baba' for no reason.

Sridevi

Sridevi needs no introduction. But films where she featured as a child artist do.

This superstar of the 80s started as a child artist when she was just '4' years old. She appeared in a string of Tamil and Telugu films and in most of them she played mythological characters.

In 1979, she got her first break in Hindi cinema with 'Solvan Saawan' which was a remake of her 1977 Tamil film 'Pathinaru Vayathinile'

Padmini Kolhapure

As a child artist, Padmini Kolhapure has many films to her credit which include Dream Girl, Zindagi, Saajan Bina Suhagan and Thodi Si Bewafai. But her most noted roles include Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Insaaf Ka Tarazu and Gahrayee.

In Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978) she played a young Zeenat Aman with a scar mark on her face. In Gahrayee (1980) she played a school girl possessed by a spirit in her body. In Insaaf Ka Tarazu (1980) she played Zeenat Aman's younger sister who is a victim of child molestation by Raj Babbar.

Interestingly she was paired opposite Raj Babbar in Kirayedaar, six years later.

Aamir Khan

Ok, we all know by now that Aamir Khan appeared as a child artist in Yaadon Ki Baarat (1973). He looked cute in the 2-minute appearance in the title song where he raises his little finger to indicate nature's call. The film was directed by his uncle Nasir Hussain and Aamir played the younger role of Tariq, who again was his uncle.

But how many know that as a child artist, Aamir has also worked in a film called Madhosh (1974)? Two decades later, his brother Faisal Khan debuted in a film by the same name.

Some more interesting trivia! Which is Aamir's debut film as a grown up actor? No, it wasn't Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), as is the popular belief. He made his debut in Ketan Mehta's Holi (1984) which co-starred his Lagaan director Ashutosh Gowariker. So Mangal Pandey wasn't his first film with Ketan Mehta.

Bobby Deol

Now this might come as a surprise. Do you ever remember seeing Bobby Deol as a child actor in any film? Well, that's because he just had a 10-second appearance in Manmohan Desai's Dharam Veer (1977) where he played a young Dharamendra. In the same gladiator costume that Dharamendra subsequently dons throughout Dharam Veer, Bobby looks enormously endearing while breaking a stone with a hammer in Dharam's introductory scene.

Urmila Matondkar

Many people mistake Urmila's debut as a child artist to be Shekhar Kapur's Masoom (1983). It actually was Shyam Benegal's Kalyug (1980). Interestingly in her debut film, Urmila didn't play a girl but a boy. She played the son of Raj Babbar and Rekha and was named 'Parik#'.

In Masoom she became a popular face as the eldest of the kiddo trio. Her song 'Lakdi Ki Kathi' is still one of the most popular children songs. Jugal Hansraj (another popular child artist) who played her kid brother in Masoom, was subsequently paired opposite Urmila in his male lead debut film 'Aa Gale Lag Jaa'. Nobody has a clue of the third sibling who was the cutest amongst all in Masoom.

In 1987 Urmila played Sunny Deol's younger sister in Dacait. More than a decade later she was paired opposite Sunny in his film Dillagi (1999).

So which was Urmila's debut film as the female lead? No, it wasn't Rangeela. It was N. Chandra's Narsimha (1991).

Aftab Shivdasani

He played the younger role of two of the best Indian actors - Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan. Aftab started with Mr. India (1987) (it also starred choreographer-director Ahmed Khan as a child artist). Subsequently he did many films like Shahenshah, ChaalBaaz, Awwal Number, C.I.D. and Insaniyat before making his grown up debut in Ram Gopal Varma's Mast.

Hrithik Roshan

The craze of the nation was a born actor. As a 6-year-old, he made his debut in his father's film Aap Ke Deewane (1980) and his grandfather directed film Aasha (1980). But he got a big chunk of role in Bhagwan Dada (1986), which was again directed by his grandfather and starred his father in one of the lead roles. But he wasn't related to Rakesh Roshan in the film. On the contrary, he played the adopted son of Rajnikanth who played the title character.

Hrithik got a meaty role in 'Bhagwan Dada' where he shared screen space with Rajnikanth and Rakesh Roshan in many scenes. He also danced with Sridevi in a song. Last but not the least; he also had a death sequence where he emoted well.

Karan Johar speaks from NY on addressing Wharton University
By Subhash K. Jha, November 16, 2006 - 06:25 IST

Karan Johar has discovered a new vocation for himself. The role of Bollywood ambassador suits him just fine.

Says Karan, "I've always said I'm a people? person. And to be able to talk about our cinema with audiences abroad is an experience I hold close to my heart." Karan Kohar in New York, is ecstatic about the response he got while addressing business-management alumni at Wharton University. "They were all clued into our cinema, and amazingly interactive. Most of their questions were about this year's two reformist films Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho Munnabhai . These two films have completely changed western perceptions of our cinema. From being a song-and-dance oddity we're now looked at as purveyors of a cinema with serious stimulating ideas put together in a palatable style. Earlier, in the 1950s we had the socially relevant cinema of Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt like Awara, Sri 420 and Pyasa. But then the movement petered out. I believe Rang De Basanti and Lage Raho ? have revived the influence of reformist cinema not just in India but in the West. "

Karan sees Munnabhai as reviving interest in Gandhism in the Western world. "Mahatma Gandhi was always our father-figure. But somewhere his significance had been lost to the younger generation. While at Wharton I was amazed by the interest in Gandhian thought. I was repeatedly questioned on how much Raj Kumar Hirani's film reflected the wider social reality."

Karan was also asked about the urban Indian marriage as shown in his film Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna. "They wanted to know how I could make the film that I did with stars with established images. I think it's simply amazing how much interest America has in our cinema."

Karan now goes straight from New York to Delhi to attend a media forum. He has also taken the time off to crystallize an idea for his next movie. "All I can say is, it will have a title beginning with 'K'. No matter how much things change for us in Indian cinema, some things remain the same."

Bollywood : Shah Rukh is a selfless actor: Isha Koppikar
Posted by admin on 2006/11/16 5:02:17

Mumbai, Nov 16 (IANS) Praises galore for Shah Rukh Khan. No it is not Kareena Kapoor - this time around Bollywood Baadshah has cast his spell on Isha Koppikar.

She is completely in awe of Shah Rukh after working with him in "Don - The Chase Begins". She is still reeling from the "Don" hangover, reports Bollywood Trade.

"I'm elated. 'Don' has been an entertaining and fulfilling experience. Shah Rukh is a great guy and a selfless actor. He's not just concerned about his performance but worries about everyone present on the set. He has a great sense of humour and is very young at heart. Even Farhan Akhtar is full of life," said Isha.

Isha has an interesting line up of upcoming films including "Salaam-E-Ishq", "Shabri" and "Darling".

Another honour for Amitabh Bachchan
16th Nov 2006  14.00 IST
By Agencies

Close on the heels of two doctorates by two different universities and a top French award, mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan has been bestowed with another top honour.

Bachchan has become the first Indian celebrity and the sixth in the world to be presented with a special certificate for his support to the International Finance Facility for Immunisation (IFFI) in London last week.

The presentation coincided with the official announcement of the eighth annual International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) weekend from June seven 2007 in Yorkshire which was made by Bachchan, who is the IIFA brand ambassador, a press release issued in Mumbai on Wednesday said.

Presenting Bachchan with the special certificate in the House of Common, Chancellor of the Exchequer at the Treasury, Gordon Brown, said ''The IIFA Weekend has my unprecedented support. The relationship between India and the UK is long standing and one we would like to keep developing forever''.

Brown also extended his support to the upcoming IIFA Weekend in Yorkshire and congratulated Yorkshire for winning the IIFA Bid, the release said.

Bachchan, who supports the UNICEF and the Pulse Polio Immunisation drive in India, said that the IFFI had all his support and he would always help the cause in whichever way he could.

British Member of Parliament Keith Vaz, Chairman of Yorkshire Tourism Board Judith Donovan, CEO Yorkshire Forward Tom Roirdion and IIFA event managers Wizcraft attended the function, said the release.

IFFI works by donors floating bonds from the commercial market.

Recognising the strong moral purpose underpinning IFFI, representatives of the major faith groups including Pope Benedict XVI, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Chief Rabbi, the Muslim Council of Britain, the Hindu Forum of Britain and the Network of Sikh Organisations will each buy a bond, the first six of only ten to be issued, denominated at 1,000 sterling pounds, the release stated.

The IIFA also participates in numerous philanthropic activities for behind-the-scene workers of the Indian Film Industry.

One of the most significant activities of the IIFA Weekend is the IIFA Foundation Celebrity event - an event to raise funds for those who work behind- the- scene for making celluloid dreams come alive.

These artists work diligently and silently, and in unfortunate accidents, also hurt themselves or loose their lives in the course of filming.

The Indian Film fraternity along with the IIFA Foundation bring rays of hope into the lives of these people and their families, the release added.

Rohit Shetty ropes in Nana-Shahid for his next
By Swati R. Chaudhary Nov 16, 2006, 8:43 GMT
printer  email  RSS  Talkback

Rohit Shetty's 'Golmaal - Fun Unlimited' won laurels and regaled viewers with endless gags and pranks. And in this era when remakes and sequels are fast gaining momentum in Bollywood, Shetty's 'Golmaal 2' does not come as a surprise.

However, it his next untitled venture starring Nana Patekar and Shahid Kapur that is making news lately. The film will be shot in New Zealand or Australia and will go on floors sometime in mid 2007, reports Bollywood Trade.

Ask him about the unusual casting and he laughs: 'The Nana-Shahid pairing is going to be the film's USP. Everyone's talking about it. The script required this combination so we went ahead with it. The female lead is yet to be finalised.'

Produced by Ramesh Sippy, the film is a lighthearted comedy targeted at the family audience.

'Both Nana and Shahid are great actors and I'm sure they'll gel well. Nana is very excited about the role since he has not done something like this before. It's a cute character and not typically Nana. Even Shahid fits the bill perfectly.'

Box Office Analysis
Exclusive by Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, November 16, 2006]

First weekend performance of latest release

Though trade seems to be a trifle surprised while looking at the sustained run of 'Vivah' since the day it has released, readers may remember that we had mentioned in the last week's box office column about the film picking up pace just as the release day came close. The emotional chord seemed to have struck, especially while looking at Sooraj Barjatya's humble interviews all over the satellite channels and it was just the word of mouth catching up about whether the final product was actually worth appreciating. The good part is that the film opened well [70% +] everywhere and has been having a sustained run as the days continue.

While majority of films take some kind of fall with Monday's arrival, in the case of Vivah the collections are sustained which means the family crowds are patronising it and hence the film is being seen even on weekdays. The film is on its way to become a comfortable hit, what with the number of prints being increased in the coming week. Though the collections may not sound enormous when compared to the kind of crores that are being generated for all biggies these days, what needs to be kept in mind is that only 100-150 prints of the film have been released and that translates into a very healthy print average. An open week ahead would only help the cause.

'Apna Sapna Money Money' was always considered to be a good enough film to challenge 'Vivah.' Though there was no clash per se due to different genres of the films and print numbers being different, what cannot be negated is that ASMM too opened quite well, especially in Mumbai and has seen decent revenue coming in the susbsequent days. This medium budget film has enough laughs to keep its investors happy and make them laugh all the way to the bank. Yet another comedy has struck gold this year and should ensure the recovery within a week's time. Good run of a week or two more and the film could be called a comfortable success. Ritesh Deshmukh gets a 10/10 for his performance while Chunky Pandey gets his meatiest role ever since 'Aankhen.' It is good to see the actor make an impressive comic comeback as a Nepali-Pathani don. Sangeeth Sivan too has negated all the criticism for both 'Kya Kool Hain Hum' and ASMM and has enjoyed the last laugh.

'Deadline' was the least talked about film on its release and it continues to be so till date. Though the film has been given more or less a thumbs up by the critics, it hasn't really found the kind of audience it truly deserves. The film has some powerful performances by its lead cast and if it had been better promoted and had arrived with lesser competition, it could have done much better. Still, due to negligible competition coming Friday, the thriller should hope for a good word of mouth publicity for better results.

Last week's movies

While doomsday seemed in sight many days before the release of 'Umrao Jaan' itself, the opening day was nothing but a shocker. With near empty houses all around, it was a horrifying sight for this JP Dutta magnum opus. Any hopes of a turnaround were negated by the fact that word of mouth wasn't anything great, which further spoiled whatever chances the film had. The person who would be most impacted by the film's disastrous response would be Aishwarya Rai since she is the central protagonist in the film. Though she has delivered one of her best performances ever, the fact remains that her film didn't pull in much audience, thus putting a question mark over her standing in top bracket of Bollywood heroines. A six crore opening week was hardly a pleasant sight, especially when even a 'Tom Dick and Harry' earned as much in its first week. The only place where Umrao Jaan managed to touch 1 crore was Mumbai while in Delhi it earned 60 lakhs. In fact Delhi NCR [Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, Kaushambi, Faridabad] contributed as much as 50 lakhs.

From the past

Even with 'Umrao Jaan' and to a little extent 'Jaan-E-Mann' as the competition, 'Don' held quite decently in its 3rd week and took an expected 50% fall. With another 6.5 crore week, the film closed pretty much close to 45 crore, hence bringing it en route to the superhit mark. The film had another 1 crore week in Mumbai though in Delhi it was shockingly low at just about 50 lakhs. Nevertheless, cynics may choose to ignore the film's success but the fact is that it has overall done extremely well in each and every territory. Shahrukh Khan's gamble for doing something different has paid off well while Farhan Akhtar written climax is the factor that is bringing in the repeat audience.

It was a case of losing breath with repeated hurdles and this is what happened to 'Jaan-E-Mann' as it finally lost out on steam by taking a 60% fall in it's 3rd week. With just another 3 crore coming in, the film is a flop as it stands at 25 crore. Ironical though, since a 25 crore total means that there were thousands of people who actually saw the film but the high cost at which the film was sold and the solid competition it faced from 'Don' meant that the film couldn't enjoy a box office success. A sad state of affair since the actors did their job well- Salman was appreciated by one and all, Akshay reinvented himself with a refined act and Shirish Kunder proved that he was a director to reckon with. But nutshell? Commmerically speaking - a flop!

'Lage Raho Munnabhai' completed 10 weeks at the box office and brought home another 50 lakhs to take the total in excess of 69 crore. Though it will be a stretch, the film should eventually reach 70 crores in a few weeks time.

In the future

Three stuck-in-the-cans films 'Unns,' 'Rehguzar' and 'Janani,' release this Friday. Apart from suffering from poor promotion, the films also have uncommon titles and zero buzz which makes it highly improbable for them to survive for more than a week, especially with 'Vivah' and ASMM doing well and 'Dhoom 2' coming in a week later.

?hashme Buddoor? Director Unaware of Remake
Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, November 16, 2006]

Noted film maker Sai Paranjpe has no idea that her landmark film ?hashme Buddoor? starring Farukh Sheikh and Deepti Naval is being remade. After a legal notice appeared in a trade magazine that the rights of the classic comedy have been bought, another report appeared in a Mumbai newspaper stating that Sanjay Gupta, director of ?aante? and producer of ?hootout at Lokhandwala? has bought the rights of ?hashme Buddoor?.

When I called up Ms Paranjpe yesterday to get her reaction she was clueless about this development and promised to talk in detail once she confirms the news. Winner of prestigious Padma Bhushan Award, Paranjpe has directed comedies like ?hashme Buddoor? and ?atha? besides directing Naseeruddin Shah? blind odyssey ?parsh? with Shabana Azmi. She repeated Shabana in the more recent ?aaz? which was said to have been based on the rivalry between singing siblings Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. Sai has also directed evergreen television serials like ?dos Pados? and ?um Panchi Ek Daal Ke?.

It seems she is working on a big project and shall be making an announcement regarding the same. We at IndiaGlitz promise to bring an exclusive video interview with Sai Paranjpe as soon as we can. So, stay tuned

?ata ji Didn? Like me Promoting New Singers,? says Ravindra Jain
Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, November 16, 2006]

?ata ji didn? like me promoting new singers,? says Ravindra Jain, the veteran music composer who made a comeback with Sooraj Barjatya? ode to marriage ?ivah? recently. Winner of the prestigious ?ata Mangeshkar Award? conferred on him this year by the Maharashtra Government, Jain considers the rendition of ?am Teri Ganga Maili? by Lata as one of her best. ? introduced singers like Hemlata with ?nkhiyon Ke Jharoke Se? as I wanted new talent to come forward, but somehow Lata ji didn? like that,? he adds.

Known for soulful melodies, Ravindra Jain started his career with ?unayna? and earned fame with one of Amitabh Bachchan? earlier films ?audagar?. ?era Mera Saath Rahe? and ?ajna Hai Mujhe Sajna Ke Liye? from that film are golden melodies that touch the soul even today. He went on to compose songs like ?ori Tera Gaon Bada?, ?ab Deep Jale Aana?, ?ain Hoon Khushrang Henna?, ?e Jayenge Le Jayenge?, ?hungroo Ki Tarah? which still reverberate in the collective unconscious of the country. He also gave music for Ramanand Sagar? television serial ?amayan?.

His latest offering ?ivah? is a mixed bag. ?ujhe Haq Hai? attracts immediately while the rest of the song appeal in the context of the film. Ravindra Jain is a true gem of the soil who is an inspiration for all those who are handicapped and yet attained a lot in life. Being blind hasn? deterred him from writing lyrics and composing for numerous films and private albums. IndiaGlitz salutes his giant achievements.
