100 Porsche cars to be displayed at the Padang

SINGAPORE : Fans will not only get to see F1 cars when Singapore hosts the inaugural Grand Prix in September.

They will also see Porsches racing down the Singapore track as part of a support race.

And come next Friday (14 March 2008), a hundred of these Porsches will be driving down Orchard Road and end their journey at the Padang.

All the cars will be put on display there as part of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia launch in Singapore.

The commemorative drive is just one of many events to celebrate the Porsche Club's 20th anniversary in Singapore.

There will also be something for the little ones with the launch of the Porsche Kids Driving School.

All these will lead up to the main event - the support race for the Singapore F1 race in September.

Throngs of people visited the IT Show 2008 at Suntec Convention Centre on its last day, snapping up bargains which are mostly on a cash-and-carry basis. The three-day event saw 735,000 people dropping by, spending $54.5 million in total. -- ST PHOTO: EDWIN KOO

IT Show a sell-out

735,000 people spent $54.5 million, up 13.5 per cent from last year[/coloe]
By Lim Wei Chean

BABIES in prams, grandfathers on crutches and courting couples were jostling in the crowds at the weekend's IT Show at Suntec City.

Over 100 security guards and Suntec City staff were deployed to manage the hordes streaming in.

As at 9pm on the last day of the fair on Sunday, 735,000 people had been to the three-day event to pick up bargains or just to check out the latest gadgets.

They spent $54.5 million in all, 13.5 per cent more than last year's $48 million.

There are at least three other consumer electronics fairs here, but each packs them in - Singaporeans' appetite for all things hi-tech seems bottomless.

On Sunday, the pedestrian bridge linking Citylink Mall to Suntec City was so packed that crossing it took more than the usual five minutes. Many others headed for the fair simply jaywalked across Raffles Boulevard instead of using the bridge.

Financial consultant Melvin Wong, 25, a regular at such shows, usually spends a good two to three hours just browsing.

He said: 'I attend every single one because I love to check out the latest gadgets.'

Others like housewife Jevi John Amali, 26, were there for the bargains.

She said some big-ticket items like flat-screen TVs were going at $500 to $600 cheaper than in the shops. She bought a computer keyboard, some thumb drives and a printer.

Already, she is planning to come back next year.

'Maybe, I will get a TV the next time,' she said.

Flat-screen high-definition TVs were the hot items, with retailers slashing prices to clear their stock ahead of the arrival of newer models.

Printers were also a popular buy, along with digital cameras, laptops and home entertainment systems.

Outside the fair grounds, the battle-weary were seen sitting amid their purchases. Some had even fallen asleep.

The general manager of fair organiser Eastern Directories, Mr Melvin Koh, noting the strong consumer sentiment, said: 'People are picking things up like there's no tomorrow.'

HPB launches two initiatives to fight obesity

WITH obesity rates increasing in Singapore, the Health Promotion Board (HPB) will be launching two new initiatives in a bid to encourage Singaporeans to engage in regular physical activity.

From Friday, 14 March,
the working population in the Science Park vicinity can participate in i-Run, one of the initiatives developed by HPB for working adults who enjoy jogging.

First launched in June 2007 with a weekly run on Thursdays at the Singapore River promenade, the number of sessions has since increased to twice a week by the end of last year, with each session seeing an average of 55 regular participants.

Running clinics are also organised to equip i-Run participants with the technical knowledge and skills for them to jog safely.

This year, i-Run will be extended to the Science Park starting 14 March, and thereafter, to the International Business Park on 16 April.

The other initiative developed by HPB aims to promote brisk walking. PowerWalk, developed for sedentary individuals to help kick start an active lifestyle, will be launched on 15 March at Bishan Park II, where participants get to use filled water bottles as free weights.

PowerWalk will also be extended to Sun Plaza Park two weeks later, on 30 March.

The two initiatives were developed with the busy working adults and homemakers in mind, to help individuals start an active lifestyle by giving them a goal. Mr Lam Pin Woon, Chief Executive Officer of HPB said: 'It provides them with the opportunity to socialise with fellow participants, and gives them a goal of 30 minutes of physical activity a day on at least five days a week.'

i-Run at the Science Park will be held on 14 March, 5.45pm, at Singapore Science Park 1, and PowerWalk will be held on 15 March, 8 am, at Bishan Park 2.

Elton John is coming to S'pore for a one-night gig in May

SIR ELTON John loves Singapore so much he has requested a concert stop here for his latest Rocket Man Tour.

American concert organiser Live Nation's senior vice-president for Asia, Ms Colleen Ironside, says: 'As Elton John very much enjoys coming to Singapore, he asked if it was possible to arrange a show in Singapore en route to Australia for performances there.'

The English pop star last performed here in 1993 and 2001. The concert will be held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on May 7.

Tickets for the show go on sale on March 28 at 9am. Priced from $98 to $475, they are cheaper than the top-tier $600 tickets which The Police gig in February commanded.

But they are pricier than the top-tier prices of $200 and $196 for his 1993 and 2001 gigs.

USAHAWAN MUDA ANJUR PAMERAN PENGANTIN

Oleh
Suryani Omar

Setiap peserta dewasa dikenakan bayaran $10.
