IPOH: Acai berry, widely promoted for its anti-ageing and weight loss properties, has been found to contain sibutramine, an oral anorexiant used in obesity treatment. The product is also not registered with the Health Ministry. To date, three acai berry products had been confirmed to contain the scheduled chemical -- ABC Acai Berry Soft Gel, Acai Berry Dietry Supplement and Acai Berry Slimming Herbal. Five other products -- Acai 1000mg Soft Gel, Acai Berry Detox, Acai Berry Extreme, Acai Berry Pure dan Acai Supreme Plus -- were found to be smuggled into the country illegally and not registered with the ministry. Traces of the scheduled chemical were found following clinical testing by experts from the ministry's pharmaceutical enforcement division a few months back. The ministry's pharmaceutical services senior director Datuk Eisah Abdul Rahman said sibutramine was previously approved for anti-obesity before it was banned by the drugs control authority on Dec 23, 2010. "The approval was taken back due to its toxicology effect, which claimed several lives. Sibutramine increases blood pressure and pulse for certain people, which is risky, especially for those suffering from coronory artery disease, congestive heart failure, arritmia or stroke." Eisah said the acai berry products, which contained the chemical, could also interact with other medications and posed a threat to users. "Users should stop using this product immediately. As for those with side effects, they should seek medical advice." The pharmaceutical enforcement division had, before this, raided several premises in Selangor and Terenganu and seized an assortment of acai berry products.
