Guru, Kabul Express and Anwar clash
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, November 18, 2006]

While the clash of the movies 'Guru' and 'Bhagam Bhag' been averted, there is a clash of a different kind that would be witnessed this weekend.

This is a clash between the music of 'Guru,' 'Kabul Express' and 'Anwar,' each of which have arrived on the stands this weekend. While Guru is a true magnum opus due to the coming together of Mani Ratnam and A.R.Rehman, 'Kabul Express' is big too, as it comes from the house of Yash Raj Films and boasts of some situational tracks along with instrumentals and theme pieces.

With such mighty competition, 'Anwar' as a movie is obviously much smaller in scale but it may just turn out to be a dark horse when it comes to music, since it has 'Tere Bin' [Bas Ek Pal] composer Mithoon at the helm.

It will be interesting to see how the sales proceedings of the three albums look, before the end of next week!

Big opening for Dhoom 2
Wednesday November 29 2006 13:00 IST

Dhoom 2, described as ? Modern Bollywood Treatment of Mischief? by a leading news daily, had the third largest opening ever for a Bollywood film in North America, netting $979,001 over the weekend.

The film, which officially opened at No. 17, also had the biggest opening ever for a non-Shah Rukh Khan film.

The top three grossers over the weekend were: Happy Feet $37 million, Casino Royale $30.7 million and Dj Vu $20.5 million according to boxofficeguru.com, Meanwhile, in a review, the leading news daily said, Dhoom 2 may represent the newfangled Bollywood, but old-fashioned star power is what animates and elevates it above its occasional narrative flaws.

?When Hrithik Roshan? surprisingly green eyes meet Aishwarya Rai? surprisingly blue ones, it? a delirious moment of un-self-conscious, slightly cartoonish movie magic,? says reviewer Rachel Saltz.

?The film is a more-than-equal-opportunity ogler. The camera comically lingers on Rai, playing a thief who teams up with Aryan, and Bipasha Basu, as the policewoman Shonali and her twin sister, the bikini-clad Monali.

?The pleasure principle is palpable in the giddy, slick Dhoom 2, a satisfying example of the new, thoroughly modern Bollywood. The film is shot in sharp, primary colours, with sophisticated stunts, exotic location hopping and songs sung partly in English (and available on iTunes no less).

?Beginning in the Namibian desert with a bit of post-colonial mischief - the theft (literally) of the British crown ? and making stops in Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro, this cops and robbers tale embraces and devours every clich? Style (except, thankfully, naturalism) and half-naked body (ah, Rio!) it encounters.

?Hrithik Roshan plays Aryan, the ?martest and coolest thief alive?, as his police nemesis, Jai (Abhishek Bachchan), enthuses. (Jai to Aryan: ? like your confidence?; Aryan to Jai: ? like you.?) And the buffest: at the mere hint of a flamenco beat, Roshan whips off his shirt,? says Saltz.

Box Office Analysis
Exclusive by Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, November 30, 2006]

First weekend performance of latest release

Yeh to hona hi tha! 'Dhoom 2' has created 'dhoom' across the country again as it opened to full houses all over the country. Audience got what they expected i.e. complete masala entertainer with 100% paisa vasool elements. While it started seeming quite obvious from the promos that Hrithik Roshan would be stealing the show with his super-stud act, what came as a pleasant surprise was an all around appreciation that Uday Chopra got for his comic act. Aishawarya Rai succeeded in sizzling which only helped her standing after a disastrous 'Umrao Jaan' which leaves Abhishek Bachchan who was good but got completely overshadowed by Roshan mania! Still, what matters is a success and by the look of things, 'Dhoom 2' is en route to enjoy an all time first week record set by KANK at 28 crores. Would it be 30 crores? Seems quite likely, though it would have been for sure if only the film would have got a multiplex release in Delhi/Gurgaon/Noida. Due to non-release of the film at multiplexes there, it stands to loose at least 1-1.5 crores in the bargain, though there is a probability of an agreement between the distributors and exhibitioners happening this week.

Last week's movies

Three movies, 'Unns', 'Rehguzar' and 'Janani', released last week and had a combined total of 1st week in 5-6 lakhs [yes lakhs, not crores!] range, which tells the tale. Yet another instance of multiple supreme disasters in a single week after a similar instance a few weeks back when films like 'Iqrar', 'Mera Dil Leke Dekho', 'Gafla', 'Jaana-Let's Fall In Love' and 'Bhoot Unkle' came together on a single day and were declared trade disasters in the very first show! Weak films with delayed release, average starcast and extremely poor media campaign coupled with near zero publicity ensured that the films were neither talked about nor watched.

From the past

While all new films were releasing and flopping simultaneously, what came as a great piece of news was consistent [and extremely good] show of Sooraj Barjatya's 'Vivah'. Believe it or not but the film actually showed a marginal upswing in the collections and that too in an age when a 50% fall in the second week is considered good as a industry standard. Since the movie was being strategically released by Rajshri, the trick worked and an increase in prints coupled with good word of mouth and family patronage found 'Vivah' collecting another 5 crore to take its total past 10 crore in 2 weeks. Though in Mumbai collections fell marginally from 1 crore to 80 lakhs, Delhi collected a little more over its last week total of 35 lakhs [quite good]!

Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao deliver well as a pair once again after 'Ishq Vishk' while Barjatyas prove that films advocating family values and traditions do have their following if marketed well while keeping the target audience in mind.

After a good 8.5 crore first week, 'Apna Sapna Money Money' showed a fall of 60% which may not be considered as alarming but not a very healthy sign either. Though the collections are close to 12 crores after 2 weeks, it now seems difficult if it would be able to touch the 15 crore mark in the final run due to arrival of 'Dhoom 2'. While Mumbai again had the best collections with a near 1 crore total, in Delhi it took a disastorous drop from near 1 crore to mere 20 lakhs. Baffling! In comparison Delhi NCR showed a drop from 40 lakhs to around 25 lakhs which was still decent. The film should now soon be seen on home video with the arrival of original DVDs/VCDs. 'Deadline' barely entered into second week in a city or two and has all but wrapped up its run at 25 lakhs.

While Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai have reasons to cheer about with 'Dhoom 2' taking a brilliant start, they would also have the failure of 'Umrao Jaan' at the back of their minds. The film just hasn't shown any fight whatsoever since its release and after a poor opening, it takes yet another 80% fall in its 3rd week. With merely 20 lakhs coming in and no promise of anything in the weeks to follow, it would be hard to imagine this film going any distance further than 7.5 crores. One can't even imagine the plight of J.P. Dutta who may have been left wondering about the failure of the film when he had actually tried to move away from his war films genre!

Apart from 'Vivah' and 'Apna Sapna Money Money', the only other film in the running has been 'Don' which enjoyed another decent week with further 1.5 crores coming in the 5th week. At 49 crores, it should need a couple of more weeks to cross the 50 crore mark. A solid hit! On the other hand 'Jaan-E-Mann' has completely lost its battle at the box office and is now readying for an exit. With only 30 lakhs coming in and collections standing close to 26.5 crores, its time for the film's original DVDs/VCDs to be out. If marketed well, they may as well turn out to be popular amongst children and family crowds!

In the meantime 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' continues to enjoy its status of marginal falls week after week and drops only around 30% to bring home another 25 lakhs in it's 12th week, a few lakhs above what 'Umrao Jaan' got in it's 3rd week. The film is now only a few lakhs shy from touching the 70 crore mark!

In the future

Continuing the trend of no notable releases before or after a biggie, the only film hitting the marquee this Friday would be Pravin Dabas, Preeti Jhangiani, Nakul Vaid starrer 'With Luv..Tumhara'. The movie has barely managed to release after being around for quite a few months and is not expected to create much fizz at the box office.

When stars tie the knot

In the wake of national speculation this week surrounding Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, Dinesh Raheja looks at Bollywood's star marriages...
What happens after the public tamasha and the private honeymoon? What happens after the toasts have been made and the clinking of the crystal has dimmed?

Does the star union coast along on greased rails, because people in the same profession understand each other better? Or does it result in the clash of super-egos?

As the speculation regarding an Abhiwarya wedding reaches fever pitch, we look through Bollywood's case-files on previous star unions.

Dilip Kumar-Saira Banu (married 1966)

When a young girl of 12, Saira Banu wanted to marry Dilip Kumar. But when she became a star in the 1960s, Saira was deemed too young to be cast opposite the thespian. So one can imagine the surprise when Kumar showed an interest in the young actress and the couple announced their marriage in 1966. Dilip Kumar was 44, Saira just 22. The grand wedding was looked at with some scepticism but 40 years later, it remains an exemplary Bollywood union.

The marriage proved professionally lucky with both notching up individual hits soon afterwards. Dilip didn't stop Saira from acting in films, and glamorous roles in Purab Aur Paschim and Victoria No 203 came after her wedding. In the mid-1970s she took on the Mrs Dilip Kumar mantle full-time, and in the early 1980s the childless couple successfully weathered a storm about Kumar's clandestine marriage with a woman named Asma. Scandal ensued but Kumar left Asma to be with Saira.

Today, Dilip and Saira are an inseparable entity, accorded much respect and adulation in the industry. Saira, who calls him saab, is fiercely protective of him; and Dilip too actively supports her endeavours -- whether is her Bhojpuri film currently under production, or her television chat show, for which he even filled in as anchor.

When stars tie the knot

Dev Anand-Kalpana Kartik (married 1954)

Dev Anand and Kalpana Kartik's marriage has survived 50 years, resting on a solid foundation. They got married in the most romantic manner.

While shooting 1954's Taxi Driver, during the lunch break, the two stars film slipped into the art director's room, where a magistrate had been called. Dev slipped a ring onto Kalpana's fingers and signed the papers. The besotted couple kept their marriage secret for a week thereafter!

Kalpana starred in House No 44 and Nau Do Gyarah after her marriage, the latter after the birth of their son Suneil. Kalpana, who starred in only six films (all opposite Dev), instantly retreated into domestic life.

In the 1970s, Anand's name was linked with several actresses, and the couple drifted into different preoccupations with Kalpana taking refuge in religion while Dev plunged deeper into filmmaking.

The couple still live under the same roof, and Kalpana remains the only Mrs Dev Anand.

When stars tie the knot

Shammi Kapoor-Geeta Bali (married 1955)

When Shammi Kapoor married Geeta Bali, he was still a newcomer struggling to overcome his initial spate of flops and find his niche, while she was an established star. The love between this outgoing couple was beyond mundane considerations.

Gutsy Geeta even played a man for an entire film, Rangeen Raatein, all because she wanted to be near the film's hero, Shammi Kapoor. When the couple decided to get married in the mid-1950s, it was in as unconventional a manner. They waited outside Mumbai's Banganga temple all night and got married in the morning.

In the 1960, Shammi became a huge superstar and Geeta, who had put her career on the backburner after the birth of her two children, decided to make a comeback with an author-backed role in a film called Rano.

Tragically, she contacted smallpox on the film's outdoor shoot and passed away in Mumbai in 1965 aged 34, her devastated husband by her side.

Sunil Dutt-Nargis (married 1958)

The Sunil Dutt-Nargis union is still spoken of as one of Bollywood's most successful marriages, even after both have passed away. The 1957 classic Mother India brought them together though they played mother-son in the film. After Sunil saved Nargis during an on-the-set fire, their relationship got serious. And in 1958, the two tied the knot after Mother India had been declared a huge success.

By the end of the 1950s, Nargis had been awarded the Padma Shri and reached the acme of her career. She settled down to raising a family (that's the infant Sanjubaba with the couple) while Sunil's career steamed ahead. Except for her home production, Raat Aur Din, Nargis never returned to films, plunging into social work instead.

When she was stricken by cancer, an obsessed Sunil embarked on a protracted fight against the dreaded disease. Nargis passed away in 1981, but their love story survived in her husband's heart till his own death, a quarter of a century later.

When stars tie the knot

Rajesh Khanna-Dimple Kapadia (married 1973)

They have one of Bollywood's most complex marriages, but then, the Rajesh and Dimple relationship was always unusual. He was a 31-year-old superstar who had just split with his longtime girlfriend Anju Mahendru; she was a bedazzled 16-year-old newcomer whose first film had not even released.

Bobby hit theatres when Dimple was already heavily pregnant with her elder daughter Twinkle. The film proved to be a sensational success and made Dimple a nationwide craze, but she didn't do another film and instead retreated into domesticity.

Swings of fortune rocked the Khanna marriage and the couple finally separated in the early 1980s, and Dimple returned to Bollywood. But the couple remained amicable and Dimple even agreed to act in Rajesh Khanna's production Jai Shiv Shankar.

Today, there seems to be little rancour between this mature couple, whose association has settled into a comfortable groove.

When stars tie the knot

Amitabh Bachchan-Jaya Bhaduri (married 1973)

It was a marriage of equals. When the Amitabh-Jaya relationship started, Jaya was the country's beloved Guddi, while Amitabh was a flop newcomer. But the twosome got married only after Zanjeer had already been released in 1973, making Amitabh a star.

The twosome were often spotted watching Zanjeer at Mumbai's Strand cinema, enjoying their first hit together. As Amitabh's star rose even further, Jaya retreated into the background. She did films after marriage (she shot for Sholay while she was pregnant) but Jaya's priority was always her family.

The superstar's marriage was rocked by several rumours in the 1970s but has been rock steady ever since Amitabh's near-fatal accident in 1982 and Jaya's unswerving vigil at the hospital. In the 33 years of their marriage, the Bachchans have handled the many changes in their lives with equanimity and togetherness.

Jaya balanced being Mrs Superstar with the running of her home and creative impulses. And it was Amitabh who gave the mahurat clap when Jaya decided to return to film in 1997 with Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa.

Dharmendra-Hema Malini (married 1980)

Dharmendra was the epitome of masculinity; Hema, of all things feminine. It seemed natural that these polar representatives of their genders woult exhibit great chemistry on screen -- their first 10 films together were huge hits -- and this chemistry was bound to spill over into real life.

Dharmendra first saw Hema at the premiere of Aasman Mahal and was immediately taken with her beauty. They went on to work in a spate of successful films -- Naya Zamana, Seeta Aur Geeta, Raja Jani, Jugnu, etc -- and fall in love. But the fact that he was already married resulted in Hema's mother parading a list of eligible suitors before her. Dharam and Hema, however, boldly defied societal norms, went ahead and tied the knot.

Twenty-five years later, the Dharam-Hema romance has become one of Bollywood's most enduring, endearing, love stories. Though the two stars have, rather strangely, preferred not to be cast opposite each other after marriage, and though they live apart, each has played a supportive role in the other's life, and the rearing of their daughters Esha and Aahna.

When stars tie the knot

Rishi Kapoor-Neetu Singh (married 1980)

No one raised an eyebrow when the nation's sweethearts of Khel Khel Mein and Amar Akbar Anthony took their love off-screen. There was something wholesome about Rishi-Neetu's affair and subsequent marriage.

The born-to-riches Rishi wooed Neetu in high style with champagne and caviar, and the middle-class teenager got swept right off her feet by her constant co-star. The two got married when still in their twenties and have, since then, lived the privileged life.

Neetu gave up her flourishing acting career after acquiring the Kapoor tag; and though there are occasional noises about a comeback, nothing has yet materialised.

For now, she continues to stand by her man.

When stars tie the knot

Saif Ali Khan-Amrita Singh (married 1991)

His famous surname was Saif's only calling card when he married Amrita Singh in 1991. He was 21; she was 33. It had been a sudden courtship -- she had forgotten her keys in his car; he came to return them and then began an association ending up in wedlock.

Few people expected their marriage to last the year. The naysayers, however, were proved wrong as the marriage enjoyed its highs, lasting for over a decade before it eventually disintegrated.

After Saif became a star with Yeh Dillagi and Main Khiladi Tu Anari in 1994, Amrita's career took a backseat. She became involved in rearing their two children Sara and Ibrahim and was by his side through his low phase in the late 1990s.

The couple never really revealed the reason but surprised everyone in 2004 by splitting after 13 years of togetherness.

Saif, now one of Bollywood's most sought after actors, has since begun a relationship with Italian-born Rosa, while Amrita has resumed her acting career with film and television roles.

When stars tie the knot

Ajay Devgan-Kajol (married 1999)

This one is a marriage of opposites. Ajay is the strong silent type, while Kajol is vivacious and effervescent.

What works is Ajay's calming effect on the perennially full-of-beans Kajol. That's what sparked off the two stars when they starred together in Hulchul around five years before their marriage.

Kajol was at the peak of her career and had just had a spate of hits -- Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain -- when she decided to hit the brakes and get married to Ajay Devgan. She demanded, and got, a successful marriage alongside a successful career.

Kajol has made her choices obvious. For the sake of her marriage and her daughter Nysa, Kajol does only select movies (Fanaa released four years after her last film), or works alongside her husband. She and Ajay have now come to represent the quintessential couple in sundry television commercials. br>

When stars tie the knot

Akshay Kumar-Twinkle Khanna (married 2001)

Considering Akshay's many (and well-reported) affairs, few people expected his Twinkle liaison to lead up to the altar. But Akshay was finally ready to settle down and Twinkle too had had enough of the glamour of films and craved marriage. Their 2001 marriage has proved remarkably lucky for both.

For Akshay, marriage has coincided with an astronomical rise in his career. And for Twinkle too, giving up on films post marriage has proved to be a good career decision. She is a modern achiever with a flourishing furnishing business, and a truly exclusive clientele.

On a personal level too, they are, to all appearances, the golden couple. Rumours of Akshay's dalliances are now increasingly rare, the couple have their son Aarav to dote on and the duo is known to holiday together in exotic locations like Spain.

Akshay-Twinkle's films together -- Zulmi, International Khiladi -- may have all flopped, but their marriage seems a different story.

1993 blasts: Sanjay Dutt guilty under Arms Act; faces 5 years

Syed Firdaus Ashraf in Mumbai

November 28, 2006 12:56 IST
Last Updated: November 28, 2006 16:31 IST

A TADA court in Mumbai on Tuesday convicted actor Sanjay Dutt in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

Sanjay, who spent about 16 months in prison after his arrest in April 1993, was found guilty under Sections 3 and 7 read with Section 25 of the Indian Arms Act. Under Section 3, he was found guilty of possessing a 9mm pistol and under Section 7 for possessing an AK-56 rifle, a prohibited weapon.

Under these charges, he faces a maximum of five years in prison. The court, on Sanjay's plea, extended his bail and asked him to surrender on December 19. The court also let off Sanjay's friends Yusuf Nallawalla and Kersi Adajenia for terrorism charges but found them guilty under the Arms Act and for destroying evidence.

Dutt received three AK-56 rifles, its ammunition, 9 mm pistol, its cartridges and hand grenades, which were part of the consignment smuggled by Tiger Memon to set off a series of blasts in Mumbai on March 12, 1993.

PTI adds:

"During my reasoning, I have not found him (Sanjay) to be a terrorist," Judge P D Kode said as the bollywood actor pensively awaited the verdict.

Accepting 47-year-old Sanjay's confession, Kode observed: "Considering matters in his confession and also taking into account certain admissions from other evidence, I accept the stand of Sanjay of acquiring and possessing weapons for self-defence."

The CBI had said that Yusuf Nallawalla and Kersi Adajenia had helped Sanjay in destroying an AK-56 rifle by melting it in a foundry and disposing of the remains in the sea.

The court held Zebunisa Qazi guilty of abetting terrorist acts by keeping in her possession weapons delivered to her by gangster Abu Salem and his men. The CBI said Salem and his associate Manzoor Ahmed Syed had carried weapons from Sanjay's residence to Zebunisa's house.

The court let off Nallawalla and Adajenia for TADA charges under Section 3(3) (aiding and abetting terrorist acts), Section 5 (possession of arms) and Section 6 (contravening other laws). Zebunisa was acquitted of charges under Section 5 of TADA for possessing arms. She was given two weeks to surrender and asked to furnish a personal bond of Rs three lakh.

The court also held former additional customs collector Som Nath Thapa guilty of participating in the conspiracy behind the 1993 blasts and for aiding and abetting terrorist acts.

It said that he had aided underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his associates by facilitating the landing of arms, which were smuggled in for engineering the blasts, at the Shekhadi coast in Maharashtra's Raigad district. The court found Thapa guilty for not preventing the smuggling of arms despite having information and knowledge about the landing of weapons.

It accepted the confessions of co-accused and evidence provided by CBI and held Thapa guilty under Section 3(3) of TADA for aiding terrorist acts and Section 120b of IPC for participating in the conspiracy. Thapa has sought bail, saying he was suffering from lung cancer for the past two years and undergoing chemotherapy.

Bipasha wins over Mallika

Our celebrities are finally growing up to the world wide web.

Stars have now moved on from static web pages towards more integrated web sites to connect with fans and reach greater audiences. While we've already checked out some sites, this time we decided to go ahead and review the most prominent of the lot. Here goes:

Mallika Sherawat

With a typically Mallika url -- mallikasherawatwow.com -- this is a pretty neat site. While it doesn't boast of radical design and a News section that actually tells you anything, the regularly updated Wallpaper and Gallery sections keep fans rushing back for more of the stunner. Worth a visit.

Bipasha wins over Mallika

Bipasha Basu

Residing at bipashabasunet.com, Bips is the only actress likely to welcome you with brilliant quotes on seduction, from sources as varied as Mae West and Voltaire.

A sophisticated site revolving around breathtaking black and white pictures of the actress, it relies on white space for its style. Relying heavily on Bipasha's own articulate writing -- her diary that reads very candid -- this is the kind of thing that works well for both rabid fans and casual observers. The Gallery is organised cleverly, by photographer, and while all the features may not be up and running, it's a great start.

Aishwarya Rai

The most beautiful woman in the world apparently doesn't spend too much time at aishwaryaworld.com.

While the site features the requisite sections, an amateurish design and tacky interface mar the user experience. There is little attention paid to the text, and glaring inconsistencies run through most of it. The site definitely does not do the a <>EM>Dhoom: 2 actress justice.
