3 teen terrors strike cabbys thrice in a night

By Teh Joo Lin

ARMED with a hammer, three boys robbed three taxi drivers in a span of three hours on Sunday morning.

It was a short-lived spree, but they attacked one victim so badly he was warded with stitches on his face.

The teens pulled off all three hold-ups with the same modus operandi: flag down a cab, give the cabby confusing directions and then produce the hammer.

Clementi Police Division officers and two victims gave an account of the robberies at a press conference on Sunday.

At 2.30am, cabby See Boon Cheong, 60, picked up two 16 year olds at Jurong East Street 21.

While he had been asked to go to Toh Tuck, the teens re-directed Mr See around the estate before they stopped at Cheng Soon Garden.

That was when a teen clamped his hands over his eyes. His friend whacked his head with a hammer 'seven or eight times' while shouting 'Money! Money! Money!'

Mr See surrendered his wallet, which had $160.

At 4.25am, the duo, students at a private school, struck again. This time, they had another friend, a 15-year-old school drop-out, with them.

They got into a taxi at a bus-stop along Bukit Batok East Avenue 3 and told the driver to drive to Clementi Central, before re-directing the 50-year-old to a car park at Clementi Avenue 3.

The cabby struggled after one of the teens shouted 'Pa chioh!' or robbery in Hokkien. It is unclear what happened but the teens fled empty-handed.

Cabby No. 3 Mr Fong Peng Weng had seen a message flash on his screen urging drivers to be on the look-out. But he still fell prey.

At Block 207 Jurong East Street 21, one boy throttled his neck while another brandished the hammer.

'They said they wanted my money and not my life. This calmed me down a bit, so I handed over $300 and my mobile phone,' the 52-year-old said.

BEKAS PEGUAM PATAHKAN JARI PESAING NIAGA

Hakim Daerah, Encik F.G Remedios, membenarkan ikat jamin $15,000 sementara menunggu rayuan Sheik Heikel.

RAYUAN HUKUMAN MATI AYAH TIRI NONOI DITOLAK

Ice, CO2...more products going halal
By Tessa Wong

NO ALCOHOL: The Smartowel moist towelette is Freshening Industries' first halal-certified product.

A GROWING group of companies here have been scrambling to get halal certification for the oddest items in the last few years.

Just how odd? Try traditional Chinese medicine, ice, moist towelettes and even carbon dioxide.

This is despite the fact that the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) has said some items do not need the official stamp of approval to make them acceptable for Muslims' consumption.

Ms Dewi Suratty, head of halal certification at Muis, said: 'Ice and carbon dioxide are considered halal already, but some companies do it for marketing purposes and to give assurance to their customers.'

To be considered halal, food and other products must be produced or prepared in a halal environment. This means no parts of a pig or alcohol must have been used during production. Also, meat used must come from animals slaughtered in an Islamic manner, with the windpipe and gullet severed.

The rise in popularity in halal certification will come up for discussion at a trade forum at Food and Hotel Asia, which opens today at the Singapore Expo. As an indication of the growth in this niche market, the pavilion showcasing the latest in halal products will be almost twice the size of the one in the previous show in 2006.

The number of halal-certified restaurants here has grown 10 per cent, year on year since 2000 - from 533 that year to 2,012 last year, said Muis.

Companies pay between $320 and $670 to receive or renew a halal certificate for their premises, depending on the type of business and the duration of certification.

One company which has applied for a halal certification is industrial and medical gas supplier Singapore Oxygen Air Liquide, which supplies carbon dioxide for fizzy drinks. A spokesman said the company did it at the request of a major drinks manufacturer here.

Last year, traditional Chinese medicine maker Science Arts had 19 of its products, including lingzhi and bilberry capsules, certified halal. Wet-wipes company Freshening Industries also had its line of alcohol-free moist towelettes certified last year.

It seems to be a business move that pays dividends.

Ice maker Tuck Lee, for example, has had a 5 per cent increase in sales since it had its ice products declared halal in 2000. Muslim customers now account for 20 per cent of its orders compared to 15 per cent before certification.

Globally, halal food has become a megabucks industry in recent years. This is largely because of the growth of the Middle East consumer market. Global demand for halal food products is now around $560 billion, said Muis.

In Singapore, parallel growth in affluence among Muslim consumers has contributed to the market's growth as well.

Ms Dewi said: 'There is definitely high demand from Muslims who are more adventurous and well travelled and who want more choice in dining and food products.'

Tekka Centre to close for upgrading and will re-open in late 2009
By Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 22 April 2008 1821 hrs

SINGAPORE: The Tekka Centre, which is located at Blk 665, Buffalo Road, will close for upgrading on 1 May 2008 till the third quarter of 2009.

It will be given a makeover under the National Environment Agency's (NEA) Hawker Centres Upgrading Programme (HUP).

The market cum hawker centre was built in 1980 and has become a tourist attraction over the years.

NEA said the upgraded centre will be more accessible as there will be provisions such as escalators, lifts and wider passageways for the elderly and handicapped. The centre's total seating capacity will also be increased after the upgrading.

During the upgrading period, about half of the stallholders will continue their business operations at a temporary centre located between Northumberland Road and Race Course Road.

Most of the remaining stallholders have decided to rest during the upgrading period.

NEA manages 112 markets/food centres. To date, 62 markets/food centres have been upgraded. The centres currently undergoing upgrading include Blk 335 of Smith Street and Geylang Serai Market. - CNA/vm

Contraband cigarettes seized at Woodlands Checkpoint, driver arrested
By Lynda Hong, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 23 April 2008 0022 hrs

Contraband cigarettes hidden at the back of the trailer vehicle.

SINGAPORE: A large consignment of cigarettes was seized at the Woodlands Checkpoint on Monday.

The contraband cigarettes, worth S$180,810, were hidden at the back of a 40-foot trailer.

The vehicle appeared to have undergone some recent modifications at its rear, including a fresh coat of paint. And this aroused suspicions of officers from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

When the floorboards were removed, the officers discovered three secret compartments, each filled with contraband cigarettes. There were 2,009 cartons of contraband cigarettes.

The customs duty on the cigarettes was S$141,400, while the Goods and Services Tax (GST) involved was S$12,800.

The driver, a 27-year-old Malaysian, has been handed over to the Singapore Customs for investigations.

If convicted, first-time offenders can be fined up to a maximum of 20 times the amount of duty evaded. Repeat offenders can be jailed for up to two years and fined. - CNA/de

Newater wins global water prize

NEWATER has clinched the Environmental Contribution of the Year' title at the Global Water Awards 2008 ceremony on Monday night in London.

This is the second win for PUB, Singapore's national water agency, from the award organiser, Global Water Intelligence (GWI). In 2006, it as named the Water Agency of the Year.

The award is given for the best management of a water or waste water plant that leaves a small environmental footprint.

In its citation for the prize, GWI, a monthly journal on the international water market, said that Singapore is the world leader in the application of recycled water and its Newater strategy can be a model for all water agencies on reusing potable water.

In his acceptance speech, PUB CEO Khoo Teng Chye said: 'Newater is a result of PUB's continuous investments in water R&D and it enables us to use each drop of water more than once, so that we do not need to take more water from the environment. That helps to contribute to water sustainability.'

Mr Christopher Gasson, the publisher of GWI, said: 'At the Global Water Awards dinner we toasted the award with Newater specially shipped over from Singapore. Its quality and taste surpasses the best London's water can offer.'

Newater is produced by purifying treated used water through using advanced microfiltration, reverse osmosis membranes and ultraviolet technology.

This process makes the water exceptionally clean and safe to drink.

Produced on a large-scale basis, Newater is one of Singapore's Four National Taps and PUB's long-term strategy for a diversified water supply for the country. The other three sources are water from local catchment areas, imported water from Johor and desalinated water.

Newater currently meets more than 15 per cent of Singapore's daily water needs for domestic and non-domestic sectors. To cope with growing demand, work on the fifth and largest Newater plant located in Changi will start this month. This plant can produce up to 227 million litres of Newater a day.
