Today’s Answer Corner ☆
Q: Who is the person that he respects?
A: Ikuta Toma-kun!
The one who is his target, a senpai that he really likes (大好きな) ☆
The reason why he started dancing was because of Toma-kun!
When he wanted to learn to dance, he saw Toma-kun dancing on a Johnny’s Jr show and thought it was very cool!
Week after week, he would dance with all his efforts ☆
Always thinking, “I want to dance together (with Toma) someday.”
Last year, his dream to act with Toma-kun came true ☆
He appeared in the musical Grease and his earnest dream came true ☆
He told this to Toma-kun and (Toma) was very happy.
Right now, his big aim is to act in a drama or movie with Toma-kun, who influenced him ☆
Ganbaru!
Someone left a comment saying that his/her friend also started to dance and became a Johnny’s because he admired Ikuta-sanwordpress blog stats

Magazine CUT No. 9 (2009)
Translation
From the super longggggg four page interview in CUT 0909.
The first part.
Not directly translated, only made rough notes.
Do you still remember your first performance?
- NHK’s asadora Aguri
- received the script around a week before filming started
- was with 4 actors that were of similar age, but at that time, just wanted to play
What were the difficulties during your first performance?
- saying the things that were written on the script
- but he can clearly remember the farewell scene with a friend, having to cry at that occasion
- the leader of the group had to move away, the parting scene was to say “thank you” in front of his house
- starting from the rehearsal, don’t know how but the tears started flowing, thought “あれっ(ehh/huh)?”
- really did feel lonely
- even though it felt unbelievable, there was a moment where he thought “maybe I’m a genius” (laugh)
- but after becoming an adult, it’s harder to have those straightforward feelings from that time
- would consider and contemplate a lot of things
Did you feel that acting was interesting?
- no, not at all
- because he was still a junior high student at that time, didn’t think he would do this kind of work for the rest of his life
Which production led you to start to enjoy performing?
- Susanoo gave him a lot of encouragement
- it was a Shinkansen butai, a place with a lot of freedom
- there were people that came on bikes, people came in carrying their bento and wearing tracksuits
- all of them were adults
- Shinkansen members started working here during their university days
- felt like an activity club
- didn’t give up halfway, was rather very serious
- like a serious game with an incredible outcome at the end
- felt that they are an amazing troupe, extremely wonderful
- from that point on, started wanting to do more butais
Started to become interested in butai and not acting.
- yes
- got flyers at the theatre, started to watch a lot of performances
- discovered “there’s this type of (butai)” and “there’s this kind of actors”
- started to participate in their meals after watching the performance
- slowly, started to make a lot of friends that are actors
- even though they’ve never worked together, the people that he meet through gatherings increased as well
- there were a lot of incredible people, felt that performance is deep
Are there areas that make the performance interesting?
- when the audience’s tension rises, those performing would get excited too
- as well, just by following what Inoue-san taught regarding the actions, tone and speed that the script should be read, why is it so appealing?
- at that time he didn’t understand
- rehearsing the strange pauses and tones, and by doing that, it’ll be accepted
- it was very interesting
- from then on, started to look for the most interesting feeling, pauses and tones
Have you ever considered leaving the jimusho and turn to the stage?
- u~n. he hasn’t
- why is that ne?
- but because he wants to perform in more butais, went to watch more butais
- gradually entered into doing work related to butai
The most memorable butai?
- Azumi (2005)
- all the previous butais were with senpais from the jimusho
- Matsuoka-kun was the lead in Susanoo, was basically lead by the senpais
- but Azumi was the first time without (any senpais), Kuroki Meisa was the lead
- excited that it felt like he can finally be independent, was very into it
- went to rehearsals early, practice wielding the wooden sword
- had a lot of calluses (laugh)
- was extremely enriching
Ikuta-san’s own techniques, when did they start to develop?
- Edogaa-san Yukuefumei
- a one situation performance with only 6 people, Sato Atsuhiro-kun playing the lead
- a senpai that he likes very very much (すごく大好き)
- received a lot of advice from him
- from techniques, to associating on the set, he learned a lot
What makes you feel 「なるほどな (Indeed/I see)」?
- going to the rehearsal site alone (laugh)
- wants to create an atmosphere where he can easily go out to eat after rehearsal is over
- that’s why even now, he’ll go to rehearsals by himself
Playing the lead in 2006 Shinkansen’s Cat in the Red Boots was very important, what were you thinking when you first heard about it?
- ano~, before hearing it from the jimusho, Furuta-san accidentally told him (laugh)
- “You’re going to perform with us this time?”
- “Eh? What is it?”
- “You didn’t hear? Ah, then pretend you didn’t know,” was what he was told (laugh)
- for around a month, was troubled the entire~ time
(Laugh) Until you heard from the jimusho?
- right right, he was super shocked
- but he was very happy…. thinking about it now, the day when the newspapers announced this butai, he was extremely excited
- went to the nearby convenience store at 4 in the morning to buy the newspaper
(Laugh) You went to buy it yourself?
- he went himself. hahahaha
- still, it was something really important
- on Gekidan☆Shinkansen’s stage, will be performing his first lead production
Your first lead role with the troupe that formed your desire to perform. Do you still remember what you felt while working at that time?
- what he thought at that time was how a lot of members from Susanoo would also be in it
- after 4 years, everyone improved
- during Susanoo, the level was very high
- it be became even better now, he was very glad
- his own development, seems like it stopped somewhere
- but then, looking at his much older senpais, he can’t help but hope “maybe I can still keep on improving even at that age”
- at the same time he thought, “would I be okay? There is some growth during those 4 years, right?”
Did anyone say something like “You’ve grown~”.
- (He) said it, Furuta-san
- during the afterparty, received words like “You’ve improved”, he cried uncontrollably (laugh)
- (Furuta-san) said to him “So glad you came to do (this butai)”, and the tears~! (started coming)
It was something that left a deep impression.
- it was
- after the butai ended, for a while he was in a state of daze
- things like the loneliness after everything finished, the satisfaction after running to the fullest as well as not haven’t done anything at all and wanting to do it all over again
- thought about a lot of things
Compared to himself 4 years ago, which part of him changed?
- understood the meaning behind what Inoue-san said
- had that kind of change
- after Inoue-san taught him to “act this way, it’ll be more interesting”, he could feel that “ah, that’s true. it definitely would be more interesting”
- during Susanoo, he acted as he was told, but didn’t understand how it would be interesting
Why were you able to understand that?
- the experience
- experienced a lot… watched (a lot)
- even though he couldn’t comprehend everything, he vaguely started having his own understanding
Ikuta Toma, you've come a long way.
The parts about dramas and movie will come later~
Super long kan ... ada lagi sambungan tuh .. tunggu !!!! Demi Toma .. den sanggup baca banyak kali .. heheh XD

Potato (Oct 2009)
Crosstalk Ikuta Toma X Yamshita Tomohisa
25th Anniversary Special Crosstalk
We haven't changed since then
Ikuta Toma X Yamashita Tomohisa
We bring you the second article in the special crosstalk series commemorating Potato’s 25th year!
This time we’ve got great friends from over 10 years ago, Yamashita Tomohisa and Ikuta Toma.
We got to hear plenty of deep stories!
[p. 41]
[toma] I still talk passionately about things with Yamashita―
[pi] Because Toma was there, I’m here today―
[p. 42]
Photo Comparison CHECK!
“We’re so young!”
Potato requested tem to pose the same way they did 10 years ago, and despite of the embarrassed “We’re really doing this?” from them, the two reconstructed the image down till how they have their legs crossed. There was constant smiling during the photoshoot, and they had lively exchanges about nostalgic memories.
Toma’s a special friend with whom I’ve grown up with – Yamashita
Yamashita is both a friend and a comrade for me – Ikuta
There was tension in the air
Yamashita: There’re so many nostalgic pictures~ (checking POTATO back issues)
Ikuta: You’re right, nostalgic.
Yamashita: Looking back at these now, we were such kids.
Ikuta: Yamashita’s cheeks are all pudgy (laughs).
Yamashita: You’re right~. Ah, look at this. Here’s an article from when we went to America together.
Ikuta: Ah~, we did go. And if I remember right, Yamashita was stung by a bee. And that totally ruined the whole thing for you (laughs).
Yamashita: Right right! You could totally see my tension go down. Thinking back to it now, it’s strange to think something little like that made me so depressed…
Ikuta: And seeing you like that, the other members got depressed too (laughs). We were all still mentally weak~.
Yamashita: Right. …How ever many years go by, you don’t forget episodes like this one. But really, Toma and me were in the same photoshoots the most around this time.
Ikuta: We were. We just took a picture right now taking the same poses, but it’s embarrassing to do it at this stage (laughs).
Yamashita: Who’d have thought we’d be doing a photoshoot with the same poses 10 years later (laughs). But I really did feel the length of our history there. At the time, wasn’t it half like going to go play even when you were told you had a photoshoot to go to?
Ikuta: We were always totally running around in the studio. And then we’d get our costumes all soaked in sweat even before the photoshoot and get yelled at by the stylist-san and the make up-san all the time.
Yamashita: We were so obnoxious~.
(Potato: Do you remember the first time you two met each other?)
Yamashita: I’d watched TV shows Toma was in, so I knew him by sight, but the first time I actually met him was…
Ikuta: At a rehearsal studio at a TV station.
Yamashita: Right right!
Ikuta: Yamashita was wearing a maroon sweatshirt that day and for some reason had a broken arm (laughs). “What? There’s a guy with a broken arm here today,” I remember being surprised.
Yamashita: Because I suddenly showed up all messed up (laughs). Of course I probably could have not gone, but I really wanted to participate in rehearsals so I showed up anyway.
Ikuta: Well, aside from the point of whether or not it’s a good thing to move when you’re in a state like that, at the time, there was always a sense of “Whatever happens, we have to be there!”
Yamashita: Right. The Jr.s in general were more aggressive compared to now, or more like, we were all desperate. Speaking of which, those backflip lessons were so hard~.
Ikuta: We kept being taught new dances, and we just kept hanging on with all we had.
Yamashita: There was tension in the air, the good kind, the sempai were all strict too… But in retrospect, I think it was a good experience to spend our Jr. days in a tense environment like that.
Ikuta: Mm. I think I was trained in a lot of ways in those days.
Yamashita: Toma was a passionate guy at the time already. And you were really serious about things, you gave thought about the balance between the costumes and shoes and stuff. And in contrast I was really sloppy in that sense (laughs), looking back at myself, I was real childish. I’m really grateful to Toma for leading me properly even though I was like that.
Ikuta: But Yamashita’s always been a passionate guy too. And you were a kid who worked hard without showing your weaknesses to others. I remember one time when we did a hockey match on a TV show, the first time you won you had tears in your eyes, but when the host said “You’re crying,” you were like “No, I just got some sweat in my eyes;” such a Showa [t/n, previous era = old-fashioned] comment (laughs). I was like, how far will you go to hide your weak sides?!
Yamashita: Hahaha! I remember that~. That’s such a nostalgic episode.
We never want to forget the passionate feelings we had as teens
Ikuta: I was in the same high school as Yamashita too, so when you think about it, I’ve spent about half my life with you already.
Yamashita: Right~. We’ve been together since we were kids, so even if we don’t say anything we know both feel, and it’s like we can talk about anything without any worry. I guess it’s a big thing that we spent our days as teenagers together; when we go through the biggest change in our lives. I don’t think I’ll ever meet anyone more with whom I feel I’ve “grown up with” like that.
Ikuta: It’s like we’re friends, and at the same time we’re comrades.
Yamashita: Right! …But you know, it’s a difficult thing to put our relationship into words~ …the best thing would be to have the readers come to this studio right now and listen to us directly!
Ikuta: True. I think hearing us directly will convey a lot of things.
Yamashita: And for me, the weight between receiving advice from somebody else and receiving advice from Toma are totally different. From each word you say, I feel the experience and what comes with it, so it really reaches my heart. When I give advice to somebody else, I always strive to give words that will reach the person’s heart like the way Toma’s words do… well since it’d be kind of embarrassing to conclude this like this, so let’s not finish talking yet! (laughs)
(Potato: Then we’ll have Toma-kun talk about the good things about Yamashita-kun…)
Ikuta: The best thing about Yamashita is how much he cares about his fans. I can really tell that he constantly tries to keep in touch with the fans. Like he updates his official cell phone diary everyday.
Yamashita: It’s true that I really want to treasure the ties I have with my fans. There’re days when I can’t write anything interesting in the official site’s diary because I’m just not feeling up to it, but I update hoping that everyone will continue to support me, including how I’m like that sometimes.
Ikuta: Also, I think it’s good you’re aggressive in a good sense. I mean the first words Yamashita spoke when he entered the studio today was “Let’s make the pictures from this photoshoot be on the cover!” (laughs)
Yamashita: Of course. That just shows that I always go into photoshoots with the mindset of being on the cover! (laughs) Toma also has passionate feelings like that too, right.
Ikuta: Right. We haven’t changed at all like that (laughs).
Yamashita: Because we never want to forget the passionate feelings we had as teens.
Ikuta: Those days when we were desperate to gain every fan we could.
Yamashita: That’s right! And of course from now on too, I’d like for us to go on being aggressive in a good sense like that.
Ikuta: To go on working hard with ambition.
Yamashita: Mm. Well, these positive feelings I have are also something I learnt from Toma.
