Koo experiences mixed fortunes with different doubles partners

PETALING JAYA: National doubles shuttler Koo Kien Keat experienced a high and a low with new partners on the opening day of the Kedah Open at the KBA Hall in Alor Setar yesterday.

For the Kedah Open, Kien Keat has been paired up with Ong Soon Hock and Florah Ng in the men’s and mixed doubles events respectively to break the monotony of having to play with his regular partners.

He has a four-year partnership with Tan Boon Heong in the men’s doubles while the other half of his mixed doubles combination is Wong Pei Tty.

Yesterday, his partnership with Soon Hock crashed to a first-round defeat by back-up pair Goh Wei Shem-Teo Kok Siang, losing 19-21, 13-21 in only 30 minutes.

Wei Shem-Kok Siang, who are aiming to establish themselves as a reliable pair for the country, will be out to achieve a similar victory when they take on former world junior champions Boon Heong-Hoon Thien How next for a place in the semi-finals.

There was, however, consolation for Kien Keat when he made it to the second round of the mixed doubles with Florah, beating Mohd Hashim-Ng Soo Mui 21-18, 21-19.

But his campaign with Florah may come to an end against top seeds and Thailand Open champions Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying, who enjoyed a first-round bye yesterday.

National coach Pang Cheh Chang said that Kien Keat-Soon Hock learnt a valuable lesson in their defeat yesterday.

“The defeat exposed their lack of speed in the game. The back-up players were faster and our elite players will have to improve on this,” said Cheh Chang.

“Wei Shem-Kok Siang played well and showed great aggression today.

“Their win is good for the sport because it showed that our back-up players are hungry for success.”

Meanwhile, there were good news for the back-up men’s singles shuttlers, led by Tan Chun Seang yesterday.

Top seed Mohd Hafiz Hashim and former international Kuan Beng Hong withdrew from the tournament, leaving the race for the title wide open.

In the top half of the draw, the battle for a place in the final should be among three players – Liew Daren, Chan Kwong Beng and Mohd Arif Abdul Latif. The fight in the other half should be between Chun Seang and second seed Chong Wei Feng.

Chun Seang will take on Lok Chong Chieh today while Wei Feng squares off against Lim Fang Yang.

Chin Chai: Let back-up players feature in C’wealth Games
By RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will not be represented by elite squad shuttlers for future Commonwealth Games because the competition is no longer considered a priority for them.

Yesterday, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) named their strongest team of five men and five women for the Games in New Delhi in October. And it will be the last time that top Malaysia shuttlers will feature in the Games.

The regular players selected were Lee Chong Wei, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Wong Mew Choo, Lydia Cheah, Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui.

Only two players – Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying – are members of the back-up squad and they will be making their first appearance in the Games.

Malaysia have been targeted to win four gold medals, which is one better than their previous haul at the 2006 Games in Melbourne.

The BAM secretary, Ng Chin Chai, said that Malaysia should stop depending on their top badminton players in the Commonwealth Games.

“We should be having our back-up players to win honours at the Commonwealth Games and also the SEA Games,” he said.

“The badminton competitions in these Games are regarded as B grade. And New Delhi will certainly be the last time for our top players in the Commonwealth Games.

“The coaches will be challenged to prepare back-up players to win gold medals in the Commonwealth Games and SEA Games while the elite shuttlers will be primed to excel in the Olympics, Asian Games, Thomas Cup Finals and world championships.”

This will be Chin Chai’s recommendation as he also doubles up as the BAM’s coaching and training committee chairman.

“I will do my best to implement these changes. We need to push our back-up players to achieve these targets,” he said.

Chin Chai said that Peng Soon and Liu Ying were selected based on their success in winning the Thailand Open this year.

“Besides the mixed doubles, they will be the reserves for the mixed team event. This will be a good platform for them to achieve breakthroughs,” he said.

With Pei Tty’s participation in doubt because of a knee injury, Liu Ying can stand by as a reliable replacement.

Despite choosing their best for the Commonwealth Games, Malaysia will still be hard pressed to meet the target of four gold medals.

Malaysia can expect strong challenges from India and Singapore in the individual events and their traditional Games rivals, England, will be the main threat in the mixed team event.

India’s Saina Nehwal is the favourite for the women’s singles title while P. Kashyap will be out to ruffle some feathers in the men’s competition. In the men’s doubles, Nathan Robertson-Anthony Clark are certainly strong contenders for honours.

Zakry-Fairuz miss out

HE BA of Malaysia (BAM) has confirmed only those who qualify on merit will compete in the  World Championships and this means Zakry Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari will miss the  Aug 23-29 meet.

Malaysia will have World No 1 Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and professional pairs Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen competing in Paris.

BAM had the option of selecting three of its own pairs in the top 24 of the world rankings but decided not to.

BAM secretary Ng Chin Chai confirmed  the coaches had no objections and  Zakry-Fairuz will have to focus on getting  their act together and try to qualify for the Asian Games in Guangzhou in November.

"We have already confirmed the top three pairs based on merit and Zakry-Fairuz didn't make the final list of qualifiers," said Chin Chai.

"There are other major events like the Commonwealth Games (in New Delhi) and the Asian Games and they should  focus on qualifying for those events."

Zakry and Fairuz will compete in the Macau Open next week, their first event since the latter completed a one-month suspension.

Zakry-Fairuz won a bronze medal in the Hyderabad World Championships last year but their form has hit rock bottom since and BAM would have been inviting criticism had it decided to give the pair the Paris chance.

The other qualifiers are Lee Chong Wei, Wong Choong Hann and Hafiz Hashim in the men's singles, Wong Mew Choo and Lydia Cheah in the women's singles, women's doubles Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui and mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying and Kien Keat-Pei Tty.

The squad will be leaving for a week's training at the University of Bath in England on Aug 10 before moving to Paris, which is to help the players acclimatise as well as avoid final preparations from being jeopardised.

HeeChun-Wee Kiong memulakan cabaran pusingan pertama menentang gandinganJepun Yoshiteru Hirobe-Kenta Kazuno manakala Wei Shem-Kok Siangberdepan bekas pelatih BAM, Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen.

Pemainlain turut beraksi termasuk Fairuzizuan Tazari-Mohd Zakry Latif yangberdepan pemain Korea Selatan, Kim Ki Jung-Shin Baek Cheol. PemainDenmark Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen diletak pilihan utama manakalaMarkis Kido-Hendra Setiawan dari Indonesia, pilihan kedua.

Pemain nombor satu dunia, Datuk Lee Chong Wei turut mengambil bahagian sebelum menjalani latihan pusat ke Kejohanan Dunia.
