Mantanani Island

Mantanani Islands is a group of three isolated islands northwest of Kota Belud (06-42.8N / 116-18.3E), or about an hour's drive from the state capital of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu. Although only approximately an hour's boat-ride by speedboat from the mainland, the islands are a reminder of an earlier and simpler place and era. Time slows down here amidst the crystal clear blue waters lapping on white sandy beaches.

Until recently, the islands were only known to a few locals. The surrounding waters offer splendid fishing and scuba diving adventures. Sailfish and marlin are the main quarry of sport fishermen in these waters. Scuba divers come here for the underwater wrecks, which still hold plenty of secrets from the day they first settled on the sea floor. These wrecks are now home to a menagerie of marine creatures, such as Lionfish, Scorpionfish, octopus, glassfish and coral reefs; many species of rays can be found, such as the Marbled stingray, the Blue spotted ray and large schools of eagle rays. The entire setting is an unrivalled marine photo studio! For macro photographers "muck diving" is amazing: seahorses, imperial shrimp, pink-eye areas, jawfish blue-ringed octopus, ribbon eels and many nudibranchs you won't be able to find in the books are just a few of the surprises that await you! 20 dive sites have been identified by Mantanani Resort, with many more still to be explored. Even for the novice scuba diver, the coral reefs of these islands offer some of the best scuba diving this side of Sabah.

The Mantanani Resort lies at the edge of a white sandy bay at the western end of the largest island. Nestled amidst tall coconut palms are scattered beach cabins surrounding the plantation-style main-house. The cabins are spacious and comfortable and come with attached bathroom and air conditioning. The laid-back atmosphere makes this resort one of the best places to come to relax and to get away (even for a little while) from the drumbeat of urban life. After all, there's only one resort here in these three islands, not the other way around

Lankayan Island

Lankayan Island is located in the Sulu Sea north west of Sandakan on the north east coast of Sabah. This small paradise island with stretches of white sandy beaches swaying Casuarina pines and beautiful sunsets is another island with only one dive resort, Lankayan Island Dive Resort. The resort was built in 1997 and since then tourists have slowly been discoveringthe serenity and tranquility of this remote peace of paradise.

Lankayan offers a fantastic variety of macro marine life, a muck-diving arena that rivals both Mabul and Kapalai Island. However, with new protection from local fishermen, the larger marine creatures such as leopard sharks, marbled stingray and giant grouper have returned to the surrounding reefs. Schools of bumphead parrotfish yellowtail barracuda and scads also appear at many dive sites.

Among the 40 dive sites is 'Lankayan Wreck', an oceangoing fish poaching vessel that demised in the area of its illegal activities. This wreck now hosts many different species of fish from small glassfish, harlequin ghost pipefish painted frogfish to giant grouper and marbled stingrays.

Many rare subjects can be found on many other dive sites including seahorses, flying gurnards, flamboyant cuttlefish, jawfish. dragonets and sand divers. Having Pulau Selingan home to Sabah's Turtle Sanctuary nearby it is not a surprise to also see the occasional hawksbill or green turtle on one of your dives.

Turtle Island Parks

The Turtle Islands Park lies 40 km north of Sandakan in the Sulu Sea off Sabah's east coast. It encompasses 1,740 hectares which include the three islands of Pulau Selingaan, Pulau Bakkungan Kecil and Pulau Gulisan, together with the surrounding sea and coral reefs. The islands are built over shallow rocky shoals from coral shingle from the surrounding reef. They are covered with a variety of plant life which include mangrove, lantana, the yellow-flowered sophora and the furry silver-leaved Tournefortia. The main attractions here, however, are the turtles which come to nest on the shores. Pulau Selingaan is the main nesting area for the green turtles Chelonia mydas, while the hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys) seem particularly attracted to the shores of Pulau Gulisan. Both species lay their eggs throughout the year, although the best months are between July to October. The marine park is now popularly known as Turtle Islands Park, and on Selingaan several chalets for a limited number of overnight visitors provide comfortable accommodation. The other islands have no overnight facilities and visitors are not allowed to be there at night, as much as on Selingaan no one is permitted close to the shore from nightfall to sunrise. This is to allow the shy turtles to crawl ashore undisturbed, and to leave their breeding cycle as intact as possible.

Location:

The park is located 1 hour by boat (ca 40 km from Sandakan town) on Sabah's east coast and the first in a chain of small islands that stretch across the Sulu Sea to the Philippines. Selingaan, Gulisan, and Bakkungan Kecil - these are Sabah's Turtle Islands, separated from the Philippine border and the larger Philippine island of Bakkungan Besar by no more than a narrow stretch of water - the route of barter traders and pirates from ancient times.

History:

Turtle eggs have been collected from the islands since before the colonial days. All the islands were populated, albeit sparsely, until the late 1960s. Turtle eggs could be collected by tender, but  conservation awareness and efforts to protect marine turtles around the cast of Sabah was realised as early as 1927 (when their numbers were already dwindling!), and thus the first measures were introduced to protect the Hawksbill turtles, once hunted for their shells and meat. It was on Selingaan that the first turtle hatchery in Malaysia was undertaken, in 1966. In 1971, the Sabah Government acquired the three islands from private ownership, and in 1972, the islands were constituted as Game and Bird Sanctuaries. Finally in late 1977, the Government converted the three islands into the present 1,740 hectare marine park embracing not only the islands but also the surrounding coral reefs and the seas between the islands, and the Turtle Island Park came into being. The turtle conservation programme has proven to be very successful and ongoing efforts as well as detailed statistics show that the decline in turtles has been minimised.

Best time to Visit:

The islands receive the brunt of the north-eastern monsoon gales between October and February. The best time to visit this park is during the driest month and the calmest seas between March and September.
