Hourglass Nebula
A planetary nebulae, like this one, is the glowing relic of a dying, Sun-like star. They are misnamed because early astronomers thought they looked like Jupiter when seen in crude telescopes. |

Cartwheel Galaxy
A rare head-on collision is imaged here in the Cartwheel Galaxy, 500 million light-years away in the constellation Sculptor. The striking ring-like feature is a direct result of a smaller intruder galaxy -- possibly one of two objects to the right of the ring -- that careened through the core of the host galaxy.

Purple Haze
This shot of the core of the nearest starburst spiral galaxy, NGC 253, reveals violent star formation within a region 1,000 light-years across. Hubble identifies several regions of intense star formation, which include a bright, super-compact star cluster.

Complex Collisions
A glimpse of the inner regions of this supernova remnant shows the complex collisions that take place as fast-moving ejecta slam into cool, dense interstellar clouds.

Cloudy Venus
This ultraviolet-light view of Venus displays its sulfuric-acid cloak of clouds, which permanently surrounds the planet's volcanic surface. This global feature might indicate atmospheric waves, similar to the high- and low-pressure cells on Earth. |

Sky Sketch
ESO's Very Large Telescope in Chile turns 5 this month. Here are 20 of its best images. The sky is strange near the Chamaeleon I complex of bright nebulas and hot stars in the constellation of the same name, close to the southern celestial pole.

Waterfall
Two opposite jets from a developing star ram into interstellar matter about 1,500 light-years away in Orion, a region of intense star formation. The enigmatic "waterfall" to the upper left is unexplained.

Rho Ophiuchi & The Galactic Center
We see the bright band of the Milky Way Galaxy spanning the bottom of this image, with the Rho Ophiuchi dust cloud floating above. This large swath of infrared sky is 60 degrees in width, and the blue, green, and red colors correspond to the 12, 60, and 100 micron bands observed by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). |

The Faces On Mars
Serious Mars scientists scoff at the idea that the thing in the picture above is a construct of some intelligent civilization. But countless people are utterly convinced that it is, and they accuse NASA of a cover-up. Regardless of how you view the photo, it is big. Shows pictures of Viking 1 from 1976, Mars Global Survey on (MGS) from 1998. |

The Autumn Sky
Intense Solar Storms produced one of the most spectacular Northern Lights shows on November 7, 2004. Auroras could be seen as far south as Oklahoma and California in the United States. Here is a gallery with some great shots from the event. Dennis Mammana took the picture above in Borrego Springs, California, USA, on Nov. 7. He writes, “The rain ended and the clouds began breaking just before midnight and, though the aurora appeared to the eye only as a dim grayish haze, it showed up photographically as red.” The picture was taken with a Canon 10D with 24mm f/1.4L lens; ISO 400, f/1.4, 30 seconds.

Aurora Over Stagecoach Lake
Jimmy Westlake took this picture near Steamboat Springs, CO, on Nov. 7. Although the northern lights blazed above Colorado for much of the night, clouds rolled in by 9:00 PM and blocked out the view. From sunset until then, it was quite a show! The picture was captured at was taken at 7:52 PM MST. The image was taken with a Fuji FinePix S2 digital camera with a Nikon 35 mm lens at F3.3. All were 20-second tripod exposures at ISO 400. |
