Granted the rank of deputy ruler as Yang di-Pertuan Muda together with the personal title of Sultan, 6th April 1760. Unpopular with his relatives, his appointment induced many to form an alliance with the Bugis to depose him, leading to their invasion and capture of Kuala Kedah in March 1771. Succeeded on the death of his father, 23rd September 1778. Accepted Siamese sovereinty and dispatched the first "Bunga Mas" in 1781. Caught between a contest for power between Burma and Siam, he sought help from the HEIC against Siam. Leased Pulau Pinang (Prince of Wales Island or Penang) to them on 17th July 1786. Failing to regain the island by force in 1791, he was compelled to recognise its perpetual lease to the company, for as along as it wished. m. • a) Y.M. Tunku Zainal Abidin bin Tunku Yahya [Ku Din] . Invaded Perlis in an abortive attempt to expel the Siamese and regain the throne for his uncle in 1823. Seized control of Krian, on behalf of Sultan Ahmad Taj ud-din in 1824, and held it until expelled by the British in 1825. Settled in Province Wellesley in 1828 from which he attacked occupied Kedah in 1829. Rebelled against the Siamese in 1831, captured Kedah Fort and expelled the Siamese Governor 17th February 1832. m. a daughter of his uncle, H.H. Sultan 'Abdu'llah al-Mukarram Shah ibni Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zain al-'Adilan Mu'azzam Shah, Sultan of Kedah Dar ul-Aman, by his fifth wife, Y.M. Che' Mas, educ. privately. Appointed as Heir Apparent (Uparaja) by the King of Siam and invested with the title of Chao Pangeran 1799. Succeeded on the forced abdication of his paternal uncle, September 1803. Recognised as ruler of Kedah by the King of Siam, and installed at the Balai Besar, Kota star Palace, Alor Star, with the title of Phaya Ratna Sangrama Ramabhakti Sri Sultan Muhammad Ratna Raja Varman, 19th September 1804. Promoted to the rank of Chao Phraya 2nd August 1811. On hearing about a planned invasion of Siam by Burma in 1820, he refused to dispatch the annual Bunga Mas tribute to Bangkok and opened negotiations for a Burmese alliance. The Governor of Ligor then invaded the state on 12th November 1821, and conquered Kedah Fort on the 18th of the same month. The Sultan fled to British territory, the Governor of Ligor appointing his son as acting Governor. The British authorities granted the Sultan asylum and a pension, allowing him to live in exile, first at Penang, and later at Malacca. After several failed attempts at regaining his throne by force of arms, he sent his sons to Bangkok to negotiate his restoration in 1842. The Siamese had divided Kedah into four petty states in 1841, from which they offered him the southern, largest and most prosperous portion. He agreed to this offer and was permitted to return as nominal ruler over the reduced territory in June1842. Expanded his territory by sieizing Krian from Perak 20th December 1842. Established his capital at Kota Kuala Muda, as Alor Star was overgrown with forest and vegitation. m. (first) Y.M. Wan Fatima. m. (second) Y.M. Che' Alraseh. m. (third) a Siamese lady form Ligor. Invaded Kedah in an attempt to expel the Siamese and regain the throne for his father in April 1823, but easily repulsed by a handful of Siamese soldiers. Appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Raja Muda and subesquently granted the personal title of Paduka Sri Sultan Muda 1842. He d.v.p. at Istana Alor Star, 5th December 1844 (bur. there at the Royal Cemetery, Langgar), having had issue:
