'How I Met Your Mother' Creators Say Season 8 Could Be the Last The show’s creators reveal what the upcoming seasons have in store for viewers and their plans for revealing who “the mother” is
If you're still a fan of CBS' How I Met Your Mother after six seasons of never finding out who the freakin' mother is, then chances are you watch the show for other reasons. You enjoy the humor, perhaps. Or you glean dating tips from Barney (Neil Patrick Harris).
But as we enter season 7, creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays say that they might soon deliver on the details the show promises in its title because it may be near the end of its run. "Right now we're contracted to go through Season 8, and at that point, there is every chance that that's the end of 'How I Met Your Mother,'" Bays tells AOL TV. "If that's the case, then that's our end point."
With just two seasons left, story lines will have to start wrapping up. And that would sure be nice, since last season just opened up new mysteries. In the season 6 finale, viewers were shocked to see Barney at a wedding altar. The episode left fans wondering about the identity of his bride -- who is she, and how did this happen?
"That's Season 7 -- how he gets to that church, puts on that tuxedo and ends up moments away from marrying somebody." Thomas tells TV Guide. "We love the storytelling challenge of showing how this character is so notoriously and proudly single, who has always hated the notion of marriage, getting there."
And if the show does end after Season 8, then of course we'll learn about Ted's (Josh Radnor) future wife the following year. "I can tell you we're going to fill in pieces of the puzzle now since we know Ted meets the mother at Barney's wedding," says Thomas. "We sort of did that because ultimately, we like the idea of further complicating the mystery."
Meanwhile, in the season to come, Ted will finally have a chance to sow his oats. "He's a hotshot architect having his building built in New York City," says Thomas. "He's realizing, 'Wait a second. I'm kind of a catch right now.' His stock is very high and he's dealing with the fact that he's very attractive to the ladies at the moment. He's struggling with whether to take advantage of that or stay on track of trying to find the right person to settle down with. Is this the moment to work it a little bit? He's a little torn."
As for Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Marshall (Jason Segel), "the pregnancy and a baby will open up more stories," says Thomas. "And Marshall is still unemployed at the start of Season 7. He just learned he's going to be a father, but he doesn't have a job. We'll eventually see Marshall land at an environmental law firm with [guest star] Martin Short."
Fans of Lost might remember that that series began to come together once the producers had a firm end date in sight. Hopefully, that will happen here, too. The storylines are already in place for the season to come: "We know exactly the ending minute or two of Season 7," says Bays. "It's going to take place in the future at that wedding day and we're going to end Season 7 there. It's going to be something! And we'll also end with a baby being born and then head into 8. And maybe there'll be more."
Of course, right now the plans to end the show post-season 8 are still tentative. CBS might want it to continue if its top hit, Two and a Half Men, begins to slide in the ratings without Charlie Sheen.
"We are open to doing this as long as we feel we have stories to tell, and, of equal importance, as long as people want to watch it," says Bays. "If it still feels exciting going into a Season 9, then we'll keep doing it."
So maybe next year we'll know who the "mother" is. And…maybe not...

How I Met Your Mother Casts Kal Penn In Recurring Role
Kal Penn, best known as Kumar from Harold and Kumar, has one of the most interesting resumes for a young actor in Hollywood. He's worked the rounds on TV, literally, while on House, he's stoked the stoner-comedy laughs in both H&Ks and his two Van Wilder flicks and, well, he also did a stint in President Obama's campaign as the associate director in the office of public liaison (whatever that means). Now, it's back to TV for Penn.
It seems as though Kal Penn has just landed an important recurring gig on the hit CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother. This, of course, re-teams Penn with Neil Patrick Harris whose career resurgence could be credited to his cameo in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. Harris may have been killed in the second film, Escape from Guantanamo Bay, but he's still expected to show up in the third movie due out this winter... the aptly titled, A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas, how nice!
But back to the news at hand. TVLine's "Mother source says Penn will play a possible love interest for Cobie Smulders’ lovelorn Robin named Kevin." After Robin and Barney's split, the former Canadian pop star remained single throughout most of last season watching NPH's Barney mature and develop a new relationship (with Nora played by Nazanin Boniadi).
Whether Penn's Kevin will definitely function as a love interest for Smulders has yet to be confirmed but executive producer and co-creator Craig Thomas hinted at this being the case,
"Robin didn't do a hell of a lot of dating at all [last season]; she was more [immersed in] switching careers," he said. "Now, Robin, who's single and is looking forward a little bit, can't help but wonder if what happened between her and Barney could have been something more had they been more ready."
Yeah. But Barney has moved on (for now) and here comes Kevin. Although the role is recurring, I wouldn't expect it to recur for too long with Obama hitting the campaign trail in 2012 and he may want his associate director in the office of public liaison with him.
How I Met Your Mother returns to CBS this fall for Season 7. It airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET, starting September 19, 2011.

'How I Met Your Mother' scoop: Robin and Barney will [SPOILER!] in the season premiere

The soul-crushing cab scene in the season finale of How I Met Your Mother, where Robin (Cobie Smulders) came to the realization that she still has feelings for Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), certainly set up the pair for a little drama this season. And it all kicks off in the season premiere…with a dramatic dance scene!
“Barney and Robin clear the floor at a wedding for an awesome dance number,” executive producer and co-creator Craig Thomas tells EW. I know what you’re thinking. And no, it’s not Barney’s wedding. It’s actually Punchy’s wedding in Cleveland, which is where the events of the season premiere take place.
Carter Bays, fellow EP and co-creator, joked that the show had to match wits with the show’s competition. “You know, we’re going up against Dancing with the Stars again. So we thought if we can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Want dancing stars? We got that!”
But the dance will likely be one of Robin’s lighter moments in the premiere, as she also finds herself dealing with the fact that she still has feelings for her ex.
“You couldn’t miss it in that longing look she gave Barney, who was looking at Nora [Nazanin Boniadi],” says Thomas. “If there are fans of the Robin and Barney relationship in all of its weird complexities, they’re going to be very excited about this season. We pick up on the fact that there are feelings again.”
