According to a member of the search party, Senior Constable Brett Jenkins, the three would give little away when questioned by police. "They didn't want to say anything more than what they had to to get them by."

He said the rapport between Zan and Sarah Ingham was obvious. "They would be cuddling and kissing. They seemed to be very close. Joanne might not have been with him the same way, but the three of them wanted to stick together."

Police are not impressed with the game of hide-and-seek. "A lot of public money was spent looking for them when they obviously didn't want to be found," Jenkins said. The media spotlight on the tiny town of Coen has generated much excitement among the 350 locals, many of whom are Aborigines. But scepticism is winning the day. Most refuse to believe the trio's account that they survived off the land for three weeks, eating shellfish and grubs, considering their "good health".

Barbara Shepherd, a nurse who examined the girls soon after their arrest at Coen, said she was sceptical about the girls' claim.

"They were in a very good condition considering their ordeal," she said.

"It was surprising that their faces were not sunburnt and that their lips weren't chapped. They just didn't look like people who had been living off the land. "I would have imagined that, if that was the case, they would have infected cuts from poor diet, their hands would have been fairly cut up from the oysters they say they survived on, and walking through long grass I would have imagined they would have had scratches all over the body.

Shepherd said the girls showed none of the common signs that anyone who had spent endless days in 34 deg heat would have had.

They were not suffering heat exhaustion or dehydration and, to everyone's surprise, no mosquito or sandfly bites. However, they were sunburnt from the knees down and had "tender" feet.

AFTER spending Wednesday night in the Cairns watch-house, Zan was deported to Malaysia yesterday morning. Police sources say he was given the opportunity to briefly farewell his travelling companions. Police decided not to press charges over the Coen store break-in.

In Nelson, where Sarah and Joanne had been living before their adventure began, a police spokesman said: "They are a couple of wayward girls. Nelson harbour is quite a busy port, with lots of sailors from all over the world. Basically they befriended whoever was in port."

The Ingham sisters arrived in Auckland early this morning after being deported on a late-night flight from Cairns. Both sisters have lengthy criminal records for mostly minor matters and were due to face several new charges in the Nelson District Court when they disappeared.

Joanne had recently been sentenced to 18 months' "supervision" for theft, burglary, stealing a motor vehicle and a charge of false pretences.

Similarly, Sarah was sentenced to 12 months' supervision for unlawfully taking a motor vehicle. She was also carrying out 200 hours of community service for unlawfully taking another car, possessing cannabis and committing a burglary.

Since their disappearance, applications for a review of their supervision orders have been lodged with the court. The new charges include assault, theft of a handbag and being a minor in a licensed premises.

So, for the moment, the final chapter of their three-month adventure remains unknown.

THE PARENTS of the twin "stowaways" who were found alive after being given up for dead are still coming to terms with the news. "I'm ecstatic, it goes without saying," said Bernard Ingham, a car salesman. "It's pretty much sunk in now, but it's still a bit surreal."

Local and international media have descended on the family's home at Kaiapoi, near Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island. "I'm finding it pretty difficult to get a cup of tea around here," Ingham said yesterday as a television crew waited in his backyard to interview him.

"I think it'll be a while before things settle down. Let's face it, it's big news. Everybody's taken aback and awed by their survival. "It obviously is amazing but I've always said the girls are resilient and they've proved it. But there must have been an amazing amount of luck (involved) as well."

Ingham and his wife, Jeanette, spoke to Sarah and Joanne on the phone from Cairns on Wednesday night, but yesterday afternoon they were still unsure about how their daughters survived.

He was at work on Wednesday when a local television station rang him with the good news.

"I didn't quite believe it at first," said Ingham. "I thought someone was having a bit of a crack at me, and thought 'what are they cooking up now?'"

Jeanette Ingham, a baker's assistant, was also at work when she received a call from police in Cairns. "It's a miracle they are alive. Australians I spoke to yesterday said 'Crocodile Dundee would not have made it in that part of the world'. "It's extraordinary really. A few weeks ago I wouldn't have believed it. They are just normal girls.

"They both played netball for North Canterbury while they were at Rangiora High School and they are animal lovers."

Their father said the girls had spent the past year living at Nelson, on the South Island, working odd jobs and "just doing this and that. They pretty much went their own way and did their own thing." - NICK PAPADOPOULOS

hah !  Aku dah agak minah kapal. Bukan mamat ni ajer boyfriend dia, ramai lagi mat mat kapal yang jadi cintan dia. Cuba tanya brudder2 mat kapal yang pernah masuk Nelson, mesti kenal minah ni. Bila kapal longside ajer, naik lah minah2 kapal ni satu group, 5/6 orang. Almost every port kat OZ, New Zealand and certain countries kat Europe ada minah2 kapal yang naik. Itu yang kalau kita pergi Liverpool kita boleh jumpa bekas2 kelasi dulu2 netap kat sana pasal sangkut dengan minah2 kapal lah ni.
