Sunday May 9, 2010 THE STAR

Badminton: Bring on the spirit of 1992

IT took passion, guts, determination and a vociferous home crowd to propel underdogs Malaysia to victory in the 1992 Thomas Cup campaign.

In the wee hours of the morning on May 16 that year, the whole nation celebrated as Malaysia turned the tables on Indonesia to lift the Thomas Cup with a 3-2 victory.

The prestigous badminton team competition is back on home soil and ironically the Thomas Cup final is slated for May 16.

If the Malaysian team can re-produce that magnificent effort, coupled with home support there is every chance of seeing that glorious moment repeated on the same date.

Today, Malaysia will begin their campaign at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil and in reality, their chances are slim but the possibility of victory is there.

Malaysia can count on two sure points through their world number one ranked players – singles shuttlers Lee Chong Wei and doubles pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong respectively.

If they lose, Malaysia can kiss goodbye to their hopes of winning at home once again.

The others in the team will find the going tough and will have to serve something extraordinary to win their matches – especially against the four strong contenders – defending champions China, Indonesia, Denmark and South Korea.

Even a win against Japan in Group B tie on Tuesday is not guaranteed.

Team skipper Chong Wei, who bagged the 2009 Player of the Year award yesterday from the Badminton World Federation, had vowed to deliver.

“Every member of the team is ready to play their role. I believe that my team will achieve something special for the Malaysian fans,” he added.

National singles chief coach Rashid Sidek is banking on team spirit for Malaysia to pull off the unexpected – just like 18 years ago.

“My team had to put up a great fight before prevailing in a tie that went past midnight to win it on May 16. And this time, the final will be on May 16 too. Hopefully, this is a good sign,” said Rashid.

But Rashid, who played as the first singles in 1992, knows that more is needed to win.

“It takes strong determination and steely nerves to win at home. It is the fighting spirit and self belief that I want to see from them,” he said.

“We let slip a chance to shine at home in 2000 (at Putra Stadium). Hopefully, this time we will not falter.”

Japan’s chief coach Park Joo-bong however, has his money on China to win their fourth Thomas Cup title.

“China have the most balanced team. Denmark have also emerged as a big threat this time. They probably have assembled the strongest side to challenge for the Cup,” he said.

“And there will be the ever present danger from Indonesia and South Korea.”

No other country besides Malaysia, China and Indonesia have won the Thomas Cup.

Will the old faces continue with their domination or will the new ones go into the history book as the first time winners this time?
