Banar tu holmes, IT are and will be a big thing in 10 years time. Butwill the Government absorb all our IT experts. I do not think so. I wudrather see my children go for those qualifications yg guarantee dapatkeraja arah Kerajaan such as Doctors and Educationists. And furthermoreDoctors and Teachers will always be on demand!
IT is always useful.... at least a very basic understanding .. because people in the future will depend on it more... plus to be more efficient we need IT to support us so whatever qualifications... or non qualifications.. baik tah ada pemahaman IT. |

This is not a bad idea really. Currently there are a few Bruneians whoopted to work in UK, Australia, etc. They are earning good money. Evensome of our students who are under Brunei Government Scholarships, after completing their studies has chosen to work overseas, and thesestudents are fulfilling their agreement with the Government. As we allknow, it is just impossible for the Brunei Government to absorbeverybody!.
Actually there is good and bad... (awu si cal membagi komen lagi )
Chances are, those yang very high calibre will opt to work overseas and never come back... when you get paid at least around 3-5K a month in foreign currency such as USD, GBP etc.. + benefits and a pension when you retire.... well.... what do you think they will choose?
If more grads move overseas to work, this may cause a brain drain of the country's professional group.... if they choose to come back, then GREAT! If they don't we as a country will be losing out.
On the plus side, if they come back then our country MAY be able to benefit from their experience... biasalah, pros and cons ada. I know a few that have opted to work outside the country.... hmmm ok atu saja.

Calamus, agreed with you totally that we at least need basic understanding of IT. However my post above was in response to holmes's post asking me to mengalakan peranak mengambil jurusan IT if the children are interested. I did not totally agree with holmes because of my reasons above. |

Don't worry Calamus, you are very much welcome to give your opinion. Again agreed totally with you. The chances of us losing these top notch professional are very high. Malaysia and Singapore are currently having these problems and they are offering higher perks for these professionals to come back.
In our case, we are losing even more because some of those graduates that didn't come back are those who are on Government scholarships. What is happening now is that the Government are financing them yet they don't come back. I have not heard of any students paying back the Government. You heard any? Brain drain is another thing but to lose the brain after sponsoring 100% is rather crazy don't you thing.
Of course there are always positives n negatives in whatever we do! |

Family Values Paramount
By Za'im Zaini
Bandar Seri Begawan - The family represents a vital institution in the personal development of the individual.
A family institution with clear moral values, close familial ties and mutual respect amongst its members acts as the foundation for achieving the vision of building the family institution in Islam. These values are required' to produce decent communities where members are made up of model individuals who possess impeccable characters.
HRH Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, who praised family values, also said that drug abuse, incest, promiscuity, the breakdown of morality, a lack of discipline and discord in the family institution are some of the social problems which are currently affecting communities, and Brunei is no exception.
The Crown Prince delivered a sabda at the first night of the final of the National
al-Quran Reading Competition Adult Division 2007 at the Plenary Hall of the ICC last night. HRH also launched the event. HRH found a need for the heads of the family, husbands and wives, mothers or fathers, children or family members, to play a concerted role in building happy families that are blessed by Allah, working together in deepening their knowledge of Islam, including in matters pertaining to Fardu Ain and Fardu Kifayah.
"Family practices based upon ways of life blessed by Allah and in accordance with Islamic values will lead to the types of community required by Islam, by attaining a balance between the needs of this world and hereafter, and not merely focusing on worldly demands.
"To create a generation of communities that are pious, rich in culture and that continue the tradition of living in an environment of harmony and tranquillity, it is necessary for family members and all levels of society to discharge their respective roles and responsibilities, whilst also possessing solid caring attitudes.
"By optimising and consolidating this role, our new generations will be prepared to become vital assetss for the near future, that will bring the nation towards excellence, God willing," said His Royal Highness.
Speaking on the competition and al-Quran, the Crown Prince said, "This Quran competition is one of the national events which upholds and propagates the divine teachings of Islam in Brunei Darussalam. The Quran is the primary source of Islamic teachings that were bestowed by Allah the Almighty upon Prophet Muhammad and is a blessing to the entire universe.
"For mankind, the Quran is the light, which leads to the Islam's path of enlightenment and piety. The Quran is the sole revelation and basis of divine knowledge that is a source of reference and guidance that conveys mankind to the righteous way and Allah the Almighty's blessings.
"From this, mankind needs the guidance of the Quran to distance itself from wrong doings and misguidance. By thoroughly embracing the Quran, one will without doubt, be provided happiness in this world and the hereafter. By reading it and understanding its meanings, the human race will be able to embrace the teachings of the Holy Quran as a basis for universal guidance especially in matters of faith (akidah) and devotion (ibadah)," said the Crown Prince.
"Muslims without strength in their faith will be easily misguided and deviated from the true teachings of their religion. Amongst Muslims themselves the acts of deviations from their faith (akidah) have already occurred. This clearly indicates that people, who are susceptible to deviation and those elements responsible for these deviations, do not posses a strong belief in the Quran.
"Matters involving the erosion of our faith and deviation amongst Muslims from the teachings of our religion have recently become a cause for concern. This is even more so with the widespread prevalence of negative elements that are capable of endangering the faith and beliefs of Muslims.
"This is amongst the challenges that currently need to be faced by the Muslim ummah. "Alongside this, the challenge and attraction of materialism increasingly jeopardises and erodes the strength of belief amongst Muslims. If care is not taken, excessively materialistic traits will destroy the strength and solidarity of the ummah.
"This is where resides the importance for us to return to the Quran within which is collected the revelations of Allah the Almighty to become our true guidance, source of wisdom and teaching," His Royal Highness said. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin |

OPM Vies For Management Of Muara Container Terminal
By MK Anwar
Bandar Seri Begawan - Overseas Port Management (OPM) has been quoted as among the contenders bidding for the management of the Muara Container Terminal.
The Straits Times on Monday reported that OPM has submitted a tender to manage MCT after PSA gave back operation to the government in April.
OPM is a firm run by several former PSA veterans. They are currently running container terminals in Aden, Yemen. PSA had previously operated the Aden Container Terminal but due to the situation in that region, they pulled out in October 2003. They will be competing with seven other bidders that were said to have submitted their own bids.
According to OPM chief executive, MMJ Subramaniam, OPM and International Container Terminal of the Philippines are two of the port managers bidding in the MCT tender. The other bidders he said are all Bruneian companies.
Mr Subramaniam is no stranger to MCT as he was a former PSA Vice President of Business Development and was involved during the PSA Muara joint venture especially in the marketing of the port.
Currently an interim operator is handling the management of MCT since Monday. They, however, have declined to comment on the situation or agreement reached regarding the new operation of MCT.
MCT in February 2005 achieved in handling over the 100,000 container mark and maintained above this mark ever since.
The MCT is currently has the capacity to handle 220,000 containers. As of April 1 2007, PSA Muara Container Terminal Sdn Bhd has handed over the operation and facilities of MCT back to the Ports Department, Ministry of Communications after only serving six years of the 25-year agreement.
The Ministry of Communication has assured the importers, exporters, consignees, shipping agents, forwarding agents and other ports users that the levelof efficiency and productivity at the MCT will be continued
Muara port began operation in 1973 and with the MCT, it is connected to 14 other ports in the region and serves countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and the BIMP-EAGA region.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin |

Foreigner Detained For Stealing Sandalwood
By Lyna Mohamad
Bandar Seri Begawan - The Ranger police of the Royal Brunei Police Force has apprehended a foreign national from a neighbouring country and seized two man-made rifles during two separate operations aimed at cracking down on sandalwood (locally known as Kayu Gaharu) theft, at GR 705007 area in Kuala Belalong in the Temburong District and GR225607 in Sungai Biaral, Labi, in the Belait district.
The operations that began May 16 ended yesterday and were executed following a public tip-off on the stealing of sandalwood at these areas.
In the Kuala Belalong area, seven personnel from the Ranger police were involved in the raid. The detained foreign national has been taken to the Bangar Police Station along with the weapon for further investigation. Meanwhile, in the raid carried out in the Belait District, involving 16 Ranger police that ended Tuesday, the personnel found a man acting suspiciously with an intention to steal sandalwood. He, however, escaped into the woods after seeing the law enforcers.
The Ranger police found a man-made rifle, a couple of bullet shells and a dead wild animal in the area where the man was last seen.
In a press release, the RBPF warned the general public against stealing sandalwood, which is an offence. Offenders could be prosecuted under the Forestry Act and are liable to a fine and imprisonment. The RBPF said it would monitor the areas continuously to curb such activities.
The force also thanked members of the public who have extended their cooperation by providing information on such criminal activities.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin |

Tafsir Darussalam will glorify Islam
By Za'im Zaini
His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam delivers the titah. - Azrol Azmi |
HRH Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince in conversation with HRH Prince Mohamed Bolkiah as HRH Prince Abdul Malik looks on. - Jason Leong | To spread the understanding of the contents of al-Quran, efforts arecurrently being made to arrange the "Tafsir Al-Quran" or theinterpretation of the Quran called the "Tafsir Darussalam".This was revealed by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in a titah last nightat the final of the National Al-Quran Reading Competition for Adults at the Plenary Hall of the ICC, Berakas.
His Majesty also consented to present prizes to the winners.
The monarch spoke on "Tafsir Darussalam" after making a reference to the role of Institute Tahfiz Al-Quran,which His Majesty described as one that imparts al-Quran knowledge, especially in the area of memorisingand reciting the Quran in "Murattal".
It also adds to the function of spreading the understanding of the contents of the Quran.
His Majesty hoped that this effort will succeed and its success will consequently be the symbol of radiance ofIslam in the country.
It will also add to the many references in understanding the contents of the Quran, as well as other reputable"Tafsir", His Majesty said.
Speaking on the competition and the Quran, His Majesty said that the objective of the Musabaqah(competition) is to improve the quality of the skill of al-Quran recital and that it needs to be supportedcontinuously.
Reciting the Quran means preserving and respecting it. It brings a lot of benefits such as being blessed byAllah SWT.
"Isn't reading the Quran means that we are conversing with Allah, after all (contents of) the Quran are Allah'swords," His Majesty said.
Anyone realising this will definitely not neglect the Quran. Reading it is one of the ways to get closer to Allah. Those who are close to Allah are those who receive Allah's will as well as Allah's blessings.
The monarch pointed out that every word that is read receives reward from Allah and also guidance.
The ruler also said, "Isn't prosperity, peace and harmony a blessing? All of these will not exist if there is noblessing. Allah's blessing adorns and saves our country and all of us."
Thus we cannot afford to lose these blessings and for this reason our educational system focuses greatereffort on religious studies and the Quran.
This is understood and supported by every family. Many families have arranged their children to learn theQuran privately as well as learning it in school.
"This is a good sign of a nation that loves the Quran," His Majesty said.
His Majesty concluded the titah by highlighting a verse from 'Surah Taa Haa', which translates, "We have notsent down the Quran to thee to be (an occasion) for thy distress, But only as an admonition to those whofear Allah". |
