Wen-tang wins in stunning fashion
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Taiwan's Lin Wen-tang overcame a six-shot deficit yesterday to win the Brunei Open, as Australia's Adam Le Vesconte crumbled in the final round.
Lin carded a stunning six-under 65 in the final round at the Empire Hotel and Country Club to claim his second Asian Tour title by two strokes from Le Vesconte, who finished the round with a 73.
Tony Lascuna of the Philippines bagged his second top-three finish in a row, sharing third place with Taiwanese veteran Lu Wen-teh and Australian Scott Barr, three strokes behind the winner.
Lin made six birdies on the day against no bogeys to finish the tournament with a 15-under 269.
揟he winning feeling is simply wonderful. I started the day six behind the leader but I did not have a specific game plan. I told myself that every shot that I hit had to be a very good one, |

Mickelson, Tiger, Vijay make their presence felt
NORTON (Massachusetts): Canadian Mike Weir moved into a tie for the Deutsche Bank Championship lead on Saturday but it was Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods who grabbed the spotlight with a magical display of shot-making.
Mickelson and Woods, playing together in a high-profile grouping with Vijay Singh, fired sparkling seven-under 64s, the lowest scores in the second round, to surge into contention at the TPC Boston.
Left-hander Mickelson twice chipped in, for birdie on 15 and for eagle at the par-five 18th, on his way to an eight-under total of 134, just one off the pace.

Golf / Deutsche Bank Championship: Sherri staves off Christina charge
Sherri Steinhauer holds up the Bruce Callis trophy after winning
the LPGA State Farm Classic tournament in Springfield, Illinois on Sunday
SPRINGFIELD (Illinois): Sherri Steinhauer held off a late charge by Christina Kim for a one-stroke victory at the LPGA State Farm Classic.
Sherri drained a 23-foot par putt from the first cut of rough to cap a wild finish that handed the 44-year-old her eighth career title and just the fifth wire-to-wire win on the LPGA Tour this year.
"I was just thinking two-putt and go for a playoff. Give it a chance, but just two-putt and go in the playoff and see what will happen. It went in. It was amazing," Sherri said after her first win since the 2006 Women抯 British Open.
The four-time US Solheim Cup player shot a five-under 67 to finish at 17-under 271, holding off a late charge by Christina at Panther Creek Country Club.
The 23-year-old Christina closed with a 66. She tied for the lead briefly after holing the last of three closing birdies, a 28-foot putt from the fringe on the 18th.
Playing a hole behind Christina, Sherri answered, sinking a 25-foot birdie putt on the par-three 17th to get to 17-under.
Sherri needed just a par on 18 to win, but had to scramble after her second shot found the bunker and her sand shot went long.
Christina, also second last week in the Safeway Classic, said she never doubted Sherri would put the victory away in regulation.
"Sherri has one of the best short games out here. I knew she was going to get up and down. And she抯 made so few bogeys all week long, I didn抰 think she would want to add one on the 72nd hole," said Christina, also second in the 2004 State Farm Classic.
Sherri held off a pack of players who started the final round within three strokes of the lead, including 2006 champion Annika Sorenstam. The 36-year-old Swede came from five shots back a year ago to post the last of her 69 career wins.
Annika pulled within a stroke of Sherri after a chip-in eagle on the par-five 13th and a birdie on the par-four 16th, but got no closer. Playing in her seventh tournament since an April neck injury, she shot a 67 on Sunday to tie for third with Rachel Hetherington (69) at 14 under.
"I played pretty good this week," Annika said. "I抦 feeling better every day and the more I play the better I feel. So I think overall I have a lot of positive things to take from this week."
Angela Park (68) finished five strokes back at 12-under.
Top-ranked Lorena Ochoa skipped the tournament after winning three straight events to push her tour-leading total to six. |

Stricker may be a match for Woods
LEMONT (Illinois): The biggest conundrum facing the captain of every US Ryder and Presidents Cup team has been finding the right player to partner Tiger Woods.
Later this month Jack Nicklaus will play matchmaker, setting up Woods with a suitable mate when the US take on the world minus Europe at the Presidents Cup in Montreal.
If Nicklaus has been watching the BMW Championship this week, his search may be over.
Through the opening two rounds at the Cog Hill Golf and Country Club, Woods has been partnered with Steve Stricker and the chemistry has not gone unnoticed, the two men enjoying a back-slapping good-time together.
Stricker, winner of the Barclays Classic, the opening event of the FedExCup four-tournament playoff, has welcomed the chance to play with Woods and conceded that while their games do not necessarily mesh their personalities do.
揥e had a good time out there the last couple of days. I wouldn't have a problem playing with him at all. |

Tiger on the prowl
LEMONT (Illinois): World number one Tiger Woods birdied two of his final four holes to move within a shot of second round co-leaders Aaron Baddeley of Australia and American Jonathan Byrd at the BMW Championships on Friday.
Chasing a fourth career title at the Cog Hill Golf and Country Club and a chance to take over top spot in the FedExCup standings heading into next week's season-finale, Woods grinded out a four-under 67 on a soggy, blustery afternoon to put the pressure on the two front-runners.
Adding to a sleepless night for the co-leaders will be Briton Justin Rose (69), Colombia's Camilo Villegas (69) and American Steve Stricker (66) who all joined Woods on eight-under 134.
