Rasmussen抯 absence raises Malaysia抯 semi-final hopes
By RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: The absence of Denmark抯 immensely talented woman singles shuttler Tine Rasmussen has brightened Malaysia抯 chances of reaching the semi-finals of the Sudirman Cup for the first time.

Based on the draw conducted last week, top seeds Denmark were seen as one of the biggest stumbling blocks for Malaysia in the world mixed team event as they had a balanced side.

Malaysia have been grouped with Denmark, South Korea and Hong Kong in Division One. Defending champions China are in the other group with Indonesia, Japan and England.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.

A statement on the www.badzine.info yesterday reported that Rasmussen had to give up the chance to help Denmark in the Sudirman Cup due to a heel injury.

Without her, Denmark will be counting on young Nanna Brosolat Jensen to win a point in the women抯 singles event. The youngster did well to reach the semi-finals of the All-England in March.

The others in Denmark抯 team are Peter-Gade Christensen, Jan O Jorgensen, Mathias Boe-Carsten Morgensen, Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen, Thomas Laybourn-Joachim Fischer Nielsen (men); and Jensen, Christina Pedersen, Kamilla Rytter Juhl-Lena Frier Kristensen and Helle Nielsen-Mie Schjoett-Kristensen (women).

Malaysia抯 top women抯 singles shuttler Julia Wong, who is expected to be confirmed a place in the Sudirman Cup squad when the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) finalise their cast this week, said that Denmark抯 overall strength would be diluted without Rasmussen.

揑 think it is a good news for Malaysia and also the other teams. Tine is a great player ... she is even feared by China,

Trip to Guangzhou an eye-opener for Chong Wei

KUALA LUMPUR: A three-day trip to Guangzhou, China, proved to be a real eye-opener for world number one shuttler Lee Chong Wei.

The Malaysian, who was invited by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) as a guest for the Sudirman Cup draw on April 25, was amazed with the reception he received from badminton fans there.

Chong Wei said he was greeted by hordes of fans at the airport upon his arrival.

And many more turned up to watch him conduct coaching clinics for juniors in Guangzhou. Even Chong Wei was surprised with the warm welcome he received from the Chinese fans, who were probably acknowledging him as a worthy opponent to their own superstar Lin Dan.

揑 did not know I had so many fans over there.

揑t felt good and, honestly, I felt quite at home in Guangzhou,
