Veteran Lian-wei feels right at home at China Classic

GUANGZHOU: Chinese stalwart Zhang Lian-wei is feeling right at home at the Midea China Classic starting today after adding his touch to the course earlier this year.

Lian-wei will be walking on familiar ground having renovated the Nick Faldo 18-hole course at the Royal Orchid International Golf Club.

The Chinese star will be flanked by an elite Asian field that includes compatriot Liang Wen-chong, Taiwan抯 Lin Wen-tang, big-hitting Australian Scott Hend, and Thai heroes Thaworn Wiratchant and Chapchai Nirat.

The 42-year-old Lian-wei has no kept secrets about the par-71 course as he believes that steady iron play coupled with solid putting will ensure a low round.

揟he fairways here are wide and will provide ample room for a good approach shot. With accurate approach shots and steady putting, a low score is easy to come by,

Tiger the red-hot favourite to win Tour Championship

ATLANTA: Tiger Woods is the red-hot favourite to win this week抯 Tour Championship, the fourth and final event in the inaugural FedExCup playoff series.

Fresh from clinching his 60th PGA Tour title, the world number one is also highly fancied to earn the US$10mil bonus in deferred compensation for the overall points champion.

American charge: America抯 Solheim Cup golfers (from right) Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and Natalie Gulbis having a discussion during their practice round at the Halmstad Golf Course in Sweden on Tuesday. The Solheim Cup, played between Europe and the US, starts tomorrow.

Only six players in the 30-strong field at East Lake Golf Club are still in the running for what is being billed as sport's single biggest payday.

Either Woods or fellow American Steve Stricker would claim the US$10mil bonus with victory this week, regardless of where the other players finish.

Phil Mickelson, who skipped last week抯 BMW Championship won by Woods, would earn the bonus with victory, as long as Woods finishes worse than second.

South African Rory Sabbatini, South Korean K.J. Choi and Australian Aaron Baddeley also have a slim chance of claiming the big prize but a great deal has to work in their favour.

South Korea抯 Lee Sung in the lead

GUANGZHOU: South Korea抯 Lee Sung maintained his fine form this season in the first round of the Midea China Classic yesterday, firing a seven-under 64 for a one-stroke lead.

Lee Sung, who is ranked 11th on the Asian Tour抯 UBS Order of Merit, carded eight birdies to set the pace in the opening round at the Royal Orchid International Golf Club.

India抯 S.S.P Chowrasia, US player Edward Michaels, local star Yuan Hao and Thailand抯 Thaworn Wiratchant were all in hot pursuit of Lee Sung at the US$400,000 Asian Tour event, just one shot back at 65.

The 27-year-old deaf South Korean, who reads lips and communicates through his brother and caddie Lee Sung-joo, topped the leaderboard thanks to solid driving, hoping for a repeat of his winning performance in Bangkok in June.

Americans lead but Davies makes great escape to keep Europeans in it

HALMSTAD (Sweden): Tromping through the bushes, Laura Davies looked as lost as she'd ever been on a golf course.

Then, she made two shots that will go down in Solheim Cup lore to win the hole, save her match and turn a rough opening day for the Europeans into something much better.

The United States led 4 1/2-3 1/2 after a windy, wet and frigid day in Sweden

Trusty old putter puts Westwood in command

COLOGNE: Lee Westwood paid thanks to a trusty old putter which helped him to a superb 11-under par and a four-shot lead after the first-round of the Mercedes-Benz Championship here on Thursday.

The 34-year-old Englishman抯 card of 61 at Golf Club Gut Laerchenhof, near Cologne, matched the lowest score of his career and gave him a four-shot lead over Denmark抯 Soren Hansen.

English duo Nick Dougherty and Simon Dyson, who were paired together, each shot 66 and are tied for third.

American John Daly, Sweden抯 Niclas Fasth, South African Richard Sterne and England抯 Simon Khan are all tied on five-under par after they each shot 67.

Westwood was in superb form, gathering 10 birdies and an eagle on his way to matching his best score as a professional, which he set in 1998 at the German Open.

What next?: Tim Clark lines up a putt on the 17th hole during the first round of the Tour Championship at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta on Thursday.

And he revealed it was an old putter that helped him re-discover his touch on the German greens.

揑抳e always putted well with a mallet putter and I went to my garage at home on Sunday night after getting back from Switzerland, sifted through a few and picked one out that felt nice and sat nice,

Tiger well poised to pounce

ATLANTA: Tiger Woods (pic) reeled off three birdies in four holes to charge into a share of third spot in the weather-delayed first round of the Tour Championship yesterday.

Despite bogeying the par-four 17th, the world number one carded a six-under 64 at a damp East Lake Golf Club to finish two shots behind overnight pacesetter Tim Clark of South Africa.

British Open champion Padraig Harrington of Ireland was alone in second place after shooting a 63, with burly American John Rollins and Woods a further stroke adrift.

Title-holder Adam Scott of Australia and Americans Hunter Mahan, Woody Austin and Mark Calcavecchia opened with 65s in the fourth and final event of the inaugural FedExCup playoff series.

Twenty players in the 30-strong field had to complete round one after play was suspended on Thursday with three hours wiped out in the afternoon because of the threat of lightning.

FedExCup points leader Woods, four-under with seven holes remaining, made the most significant move with a trademark fast start under cloudy skies yesterday morning.

He birdied the 12th, 14th and 15th to close to within a stroke of the lead before bogeying the 17th after finding a fairway bunker off the tee and the left rough with his second shot.

However, he safely parred the last to stay in the hunt for his seventh title of the year and inaugural FedExCup honours.

Woods ended the opening round well ahead of his two main FedExCup rivals, Phil Mickelson (68) and Steve Stricker (69).

Either Woods or Stricker would claim the US$10mil bonus as the inaugural FedExCup champion with victory this week, regardless of where the other players finish.

Mickelson, who skipped last week抯 BMW Championship won by Woods, would earn the bonus with victory at East Lake, as long as Woods finishes worse than second.

Tee times for the second round were brought forward by almost three hours with the remnants of Hurricane Humberto expected to move into the Atlanta area yesterday afternoon.

Tiger takes control

ATLANTA: Tiger Woods, who has made a habit of producing the remarkable, took control of the Tour Championship on Friday with a sizzling run of five birdies and an eagle in the second round.

Although the world number one lost momentum with two bogeys after the turn, he rolled in a 17-footer to birdie the par-three last for a seven-under 63.

Woods ended a damp day at East Lake Golf Club three ahead of the field, breaking the tournament record by three shots with a 13-under total of 127.

Fellow American Woody Austin was alone in second place after shooting a 65, finishing one ahead of compatriot Mark Calcavecchia (66), South African Tim Clark (69) and title-holder Adam Scott of Australia (66).

Bjorn, Hansen in joint lead

COLOGNE: A dramatic late collapse by long-time leader Soren Hansen left him sharing the Mercedes Benz Championship lead with fellow Dane Thomas Bjorn yesterday.

Bjorn, returning from a lengthy break away from the tour, had set a 12-under 204 target with a round of six-under 66.

Hansen, leading by three strokes, saw his advantage melt away with three closing bogeys as he posted a 71.

Only a brave chip to within inches on the last, after first driving into the lake and then sending his third shot back close to the water, kept Hansen on a level with his compatriot.

Briton Alastair Forsyth is a stroke behind the Danes after shooting a 62, only two strokes more than the Gut Larchenhof course record and his joint career-best

Chinarat, Yates share honours

GUANGZHOU: Thai young gun Chinarat Phadungsil and Scotsman Simon Yates eagled the final 18th hole for a two-stroke lead at the Midea China Classic yesterday.

Yates, 37, blasted a stunning nine-under 62 that included two eagles as he equalled the course record set by Chinarat, who fired a 64 in the third round.

The duo were tied at the top of the pack after a 19-under 194 total at the Royal Orchid International Golf Club.

Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand carded a 68 to be in lone third spot.

US lead Europe by one point at Solheim Cup

HALMSTAD (Sweden): A late rally earned Europe a share of the fourballs at the Solheim Cup but the hosts still trailed United States by 4 1/2 points to 3 1/2 at the end of Friday's opening day.

The holders had won the morning foursomes for the first time since 1988, by 2 1/2 points to 1 1/2.

On an afternoon blighted by severe winds and the odd torrential downpour, Briton Catriona Matthew and Denmark's Iben Tinning won the top fourball before the US forged ahead in the other three.

Briton Laura Davies helped spark the comeback with an extraordinary winning par at the short 16th.

With all four players in trouble from the tee, the 43-year-old veteran of all 10 Solheims went through the green from an almost impossible lie in the trees before sinking a 50-foot chip.

Davies went on to snatch half a point alongside countrywoman Trish Johnson from Paula Creamer and 19-year-old Morgan Pressel.

The second match also turned in Europe's favour towards the end.

Two down at the turn, Swedes Annika Sorenstam and Maria Hjorth won the 10th with a birdie before securing a half when Stacy Prammanasudh and Angela Stanford failed to par the last.

Matthew and Tinning were 4 & 2 winners against Pat Hurst and Brittany Lincicome.

The Americans replied with a point from rookie Nicole Castrale and US Open champion Cristie Kerr, who defeated Swede Sophie Gustafson and Gwladys Nocera of France 3 & 2.

Bjorn, Forsyth leap up leaderboard

COLOGNE: Denmark's Thomas Bjorn shares the lead with compatriot Soren Hansen going into the final day as his six birdies on Saturday left him 12-under at the Mercedes-Benz Championship.

The 36-year-old produced a solid round of 66 at Gut Larchenhof to share with overnight leader Hansen after the third round.

But the biggest success story of the day was Scotland's Alastair Forsyth who shot up from joint 42nd to claim third place going into Sunday's final round.

The 31-year-old from Glasgow began the day 10 shots off the pace, but managed nine birdies and an eagle to card a third-round score of 62.

It was all a far cry from the opening day when he shot a four-over 76 and parted company with his caddie.

Johnson hits a 60 to turn up the heat on world No.1

ATLANTA: Tiger Woods maintained his three-shot lead at the Tour Championship after resisting a glut of low scoring on Saturday spearheaded by US Masters champion Zach Johnson with a dazzling 10-under 60.

Woods, hunting a seventh PGA Tour title this year and inaugural FedExCup honours, fired a seven-birdie 64 in the third round at a sun-drenched East Lake Golf Club.

Solid play: Zach Johnson hits from the bunker on the 18th hole during the third round of play at the PGA Tour Championship on Saturday.

That left the world number one at 19-under 191, three ahead of fellow American Mark Calcavecchia who eagled the 15th on his way to a sparkling 63.

Spaniard Sergio Garcia birdied two of the last four holes for a 64 to finish on 14 under, one ahead of Johnson in the fourth and final event of the FedExCup playoff series.

揑f you made a bunch of pars you were going to get run over, so it was nice to make some birdies and maintain the same sized lead I had starting out the day,

Thaworn wins in playoff

GUANGZHOU: Thai star Thaworn Wiratchant held his nerve in a tense three-way play-off yesterday to claim a record ninth Asian Tour title at the inaugural China Classic.

Thaworn edged teenage compatriot Chinarat Phadungsil with a birdie in the fourth hole of a sudden-death shootout at the Royal Orchid International Golf Club in Guangzhou, southern China.

Scotsman Simon Yates was the first to bow out of the play-off in the first extra hole after the leading trio completed the event on 21-under-par 263.

It was Thaworn's first success since November 2005 during a season when he claimed an unprecedented four titles en route to the prestigious Asian Tour's UBS Order of Merit crown.

He also surpassed compatriot Thongchai Jaidee as the player with the most number of victories on the Asian Tour
