Europe take the lead in Solheim Cup

HALMSTAD (Sweden): Europe took three points in the weather-delayed fourballs to edge ahead of the United States in the Solheim Cup at Halmstad, Sweden yesterday.

Americans retain Solheim Cup

HALMSTAD (Sweden): The United States retained the Solheim Cup yesterday when they crushed Europe 8.5-3.5 in the final session of singles and finished 16-12 ahead overall at Halmstad in Sweden.

A point behind at 7.5-8.5 going into the 12 singles, Paula Creamer made sure that the United States would get the 14 points needed to retain the Cup when she went dormie three up on Maria Hjorth.

Nicole Castrale then beat Bettina Hauert 3 and 2 to claim the victory and extend the overall lead to 7-3.

Dane Hansen soars with four-shot win in Germany

COLOGNE: Two eagles in three holes on the back nine of the final round helped Denmark's Soren Hansen to a four-stroke victory in the Mercedes-Benz Championship at Gut Larchenhof yesterday.

The Monte Carlo-based 33-year-old got off to a great start with a birdie on the first and never looked back as he eagled the 13th and 15th holes to complete his final round in 67 to leave him with a 17-under total of 271.

This was the Dane's first European Tour win of the season and he claimed victory by four shots from England's Phillip Archer and Scotland's Alastair Forsyth who finished in joint second, 13-under.

The victory earned Hansen 320,000 euros, while joint overnight leader Thomas Bjorn and Wales' Bradley Dredge were a further stroke behind in fourth with Lee Westwood, four clear after an opening 61, sharing sixth place on 11 under

Zaw Moe out to strike it right with Kyaw Naing

PETALING JAYA: Myanmar golfer Zaw Moe is ready to capitalise on a new lease of life with a successful campaign with Soe Kyaw Naing in the Fortis International Challenge at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club from Sept 27-30.

Myanmar will join 19 other non-exempt teams in the bid to get among the five qualifiers for the World Cup in China in November.

A successful week in Malaysia will help the 40-year-old Zaw Moe ease the pain of a turbulent last two years where his golf career nearly came to an end after being diagnosed with a serious ailment.

揑t抯 exciting for me to try and regain my strength and play some good golf again.

揑 have told my partner that we should give it our best effort to do well in the Challenge as I have never qualified for the World Cup,

World No.1 wins Tour Championship and FedExCup

ATLANTA: Tiger Woods cruised to a memorable double in record-breaking style on Sunday, winning the Tour Championship by eight shots and inaugural FedExCup honours to claim a US$10mil bonus.

Three strokes ahead of the field overnight, the world number one fired a four-under 66 in the final event of the FedExCup playoff series to leave his closest challengers trailing in his wake after shrugging off a shaky start.

Woods bogeyed the par-three second but rattled up six birdies and one more bogey with a superb display in receptive conditions at East Lake Golf Club, posting a tournament record total of 23-under 257.

It was his 61st PGA Tour title, his seventh of the year and fourth in just five starts.

Players must show results before they head to Thailand
By RIZAL ABDULLAH

JOHOR BARU: Malaysian golfers will have to start performing now with an eye on the gold medal in the Korat SEA Games in December, says Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) president Tunku Abdul Majid Idris Sultan Iskandar.

He is expecting the golfers to do well in the two tournaments before the Games.

They are the Nomura Cup in the Asian Pacific Golf Championships in Taipeh (Oct 2-5) and the Putra Cup in Manila (Nov 27-30).

The last time Malaysia achieved a golden double in the biennial Games was in the 2001 edition in Kuala Lumpur.

Six golfers are training in Perth under coach David Milne since last Friday.

They are Indonesian Amateur Open champion Edmund Au, Mohd Amli Mohiyadden, Andy Gan, Akmal Tarmizi Mohd Nazri, Hilmi Abdul Rahman and Haziq Hamizan.

The stint ends on Sunday.

揥inning the gold medal in the SEA Games and the 2010 Asian Games is the National Sports Council's (NSC) priority before we look at bigger things,

Harrington pulls out of Seve Trophy

LONDON: British Open champion Padraig Harrington has pulled out of next week's Seve Trophy, blaming tiredness.

The Irishman was the top-ranked player in the Sept 27-30 matchplay tournament between a Britain and Ireland team against continental Europe at The Heritage resort in Killenard.

But Harrington said on Monday: 揑'm afraid that I have been forced to withdraw from the Seve Trophy because of fatigue and injuries relating to this condition.

揑n view of this, I have been advised by my trainer and physio to take a two-week break from tournament golf immediately.

揟his is a decision I have not taken lightly, as I don't want to let down the GB and Ireland team and, most importantly, the Irish golf fans.

揑 wish the team the best of luck.

Norman and ex-wife settle divorce

STUART (Florida): Two-time British Open golf champion Greg Norman and his ex-wife settled their divorce after 25 years of marriage, a contentious split marked by a dispute over money and assets.

The winner of 87 professional victories and Laura Andrassy reached an agreement this month, and a judge completed the confidential settlement Friday.

揟heir marriage has been dissolved,'' Andrassy's lawyer, Russell Ferraro Jr., said on Monday.

Norman's lawyer, Martin L. Haines, III, said his client hoped the settlement 搘ill quell some of the emotionalism that's been part of this case.''

The 52-year-old Norman and tennis great Chris Evert, who also recently divorced, have been romantically linked. During a golf event in Australia last year, Norman said the two are 搗ery, very close friends.''

Norman and Andrassy will return to court to determine how they will split the tax liability on Norman's jet and whether Andrassy is entitled additional money she claims she lost because of delays in completing the divorce.

Thailand produces another young star

BANGKOK: Thailand has a history of producing Asian champion golfers, and it could have found another in 16-year-old Choengchai Panpumpo.

In a week when veteran Thai star Thaworn Wiratchant won a record ninth Asian Tour title in a play-off against, among others, 18-year-old countryman Chinarat Phadungsil, Choengchai was also celebrating after making his first cut.

As the youngest member of the Asian Tour, the slightly built Thai couldn't hide his joy after finishing tied 17th in the inaugural China Classic.

Choengchai shot a pair of 66s to feature on the leaderboard at the half-way stage and while further rounds of 70 and 72 saw him slip off the pace, much is expected from the Thai teenager in the near future.

揑 am very happy with my form last week. It is the first time I made the cut and now that I've achieved this goal, I hope to make the cut in all the remaining events which I will be competing this year,

Thongchai and Prayad favourites for World Cup berth
By LIM TEIK HUAT

PETALING JAYA: Thai stars Thongchai Jaidee and Prayad Marksaeng form a powerful combination in a bid to qualify for the World Cup from the Fortis International Challenge at Kota Permai Golf and Country Club next week.

Daring duo: Thailand抯 Thongchai Jaidee and Prayad (below right) Marksaeng set out to qualify for the World Cup at the Fortis International Challenge next week

Thailand missed out on an automatic slot for World Cup, which will be held at the Mission Hills Golf Club in China from Nov 22-25, by one rung in the Official World Golf Rankings, which determined the 18 exempt nations.

Although Thongchai and Prayad are the first reserves, they have decided to compete for one of five tickets available from the qualifying tournament in Kota Permai. They will start as the favourites to win in the 21-team field.

Prayad, a five-time winner on the Asian Tour, said: 揑 believe we are a good pair for Thailand. I would really like to see Thailand being one of the teams to qualify.

揑 feel proud to have the opportunity to represent Thailand. Many of our new players have showed interest to qualify but I was lucky that my world ranking was high enough for me to get in with Thongchai.

Teen golfer McIlroy turns professional

LONDON: Teenage golfer Rory McIlroy, the top amateur at this year's British Open, is turning professional.

The 18-year-old Northern Ireland golfer said on Tuesday he would make his pro debut today at the British Masters, a European PGA event at The Belfry.

McIlroy won the European Amateur title last year, which earned him entry to the British Open. He finished tied for 42nd at Carnoustie in July after being third heading into the second round.

McIlroy also played for Britain and Ireland at the Walker Cup against the United States. The Americans won 12-11.

揥e have followed Rory's progress over the last five successful and eventful years and are proud to have the chance to look after one of the most exciting players to turn professional in the last decade,'' said McIlroy's manager, Andrew Chandler.

Chandler also manages Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley, Ernie Els and David Howell.

揑 am not putting too much pressure on myself, but I would love to go out this week and play well,'' McIlroy said. 揑 think people have expectations of me and I have expectations of myself, so I hopefully I can play well and live up to the expectations. That's the way I'm looking at it.''

McIlroy also began the European Tour qualifying school and completed his first stage this month. The leading 30 players in the final stage of qualifying school will earn a European tour card for next season.

McIlroy was a virtual unknown when he arrived at Carnoustie. He has played only three European Tour events, tying for 52nd in the Dubai Desert Classic and missing the cut at tournaments in Portugal and Spain.

Chowrasia eager to make mark in Taiwan

TAIPEI: India's S.S.P. Chowrasia has put last year's disappointment behind him as he gears up for a maiden Asian Tour triumph at the US$500,000 Mercuries Taiwan Masters starting today.

Chowrasia took a five-stroke lead at the halfway stage in last year's tournament here but was later disqualified because he had not signed his scorecard.

It was a harsh lesson for the 29-year-old Kolkata native, who returns this week hoping to lead the pack at the Taiwan Golf and Country Club.

Chowrasia, playing in his second season on the Asian Tour, believes the narrow fairways and tricky greens on the par-72 Tamsui Course will play to his advantage.

揑t is a relatively short course and I am confident that I will have a strong week. My form has been good and my short game has been spot-on so I am eager to deliver here,

Doping programme for golf in 2008

ST. AUGUSTINE (Florida): Golf's global governing bodies announced the adopting of a doping test programme for professional golfers starting in 2008, releasing a list of banned substances on Thursday.

Agreeing in principle after years of work were the major rulemaking bodies, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club and the US Golf Association, as well as the PGA and LPGA tours, European Tour, PGA of America and Augusta National Golf Club.

Their agreement ensures common doping practices at men's and women's major championships, the Ryder Cup and tour events worldwide.

Also agreeing to the plan were the Asian, Australasian, Canadian, Japan, Sunshine and Americas tours.

The first phase of the policy was to develop a list of prohibited substances. That list includes: Anabolic Agents, Hormones and Related Substances, Agents with Anti-Estrogenic Activity, Diuretics and Other Masking Agents, Stimu-lants, Narcotics, Cannabinoids, Beta Blockers plus enhanced oxygen transfers and any chemical or physical manipulation.

Substances that can be banned at the discretion of each particular golf organisation include glucocorticosteroids and beta-2-agonists.

Korean Oh hangs on to lead in Taiwan

TAIPEI: South Korea's Ted Oh hung on to a narrow one-stroke lead at the Taiwan Masters with local star Lu Wen-teh in hot pursuit after the third round yesterday.

Oh, who finished third last year, was even-par for the day as he edged ahead thanks to a five-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole.

With a three-day total of five-under 211, Oh has a one-stroke cushion over two-time tournament winner Lu, who posted a bogey-free 69 at the Taiwan Golf and Country Club.

Local player Hsu Mong-nan was in third position after a 69, four strokes off the lead, while Chen Yuan-chi, who finished runner-up in 2004, was pleased with his 71, which leaves him in fourth place.

Australia's Terry Pilkadaris, ranked 27th on the Asian Tour's UBS Order of Merit, moved up to tied fifth spot after a 71 alongside Thailand's Prayad Marksaeng, who endured a nervy finish, firing the same score for a 217 total.

A group of six players are tied in seventh place. Taiwan's Lin Wen-tang and Wang Ter-chang fired matching 70s for a 218 total, while compatriot Lu Wei-chih was even-par for the day. Australia's Gary Simpson hit a 75 and his compatriot, Ashley Hall, carded a 71, while Malaysia's Iain Steel posted his second straight 73.

n VERONA (New York): US veteran Steve Flesch fired a seven-under 65 on Friday to seize a one-stroke lead after the second round of the US PGA Turning Stone Resort Championship.

Flesch seeks his second title of his 10th PGA season and fourth career crown. The 40-year-old captured the Reno-Tahoe Open last month in an event that like this lacks the top stars of the circuit.

American Jeff Gove, who fired a bogey-free 67, and South Africa's Brendon de Jonge shared second on 132.

Flesch made his turn at 12-under and picked up another shot to finish on 13-under 131.

Derksen defies rain to join leaders

SUTTON COLDFIELD: Dutchman Robert-Jan Derksen battled against heavy rain to join Briton Mark Foster at the top of the leaderboard after the second round of the British Masters at the Belfry on Friday.

The pair were on seven-under 137, a stroke better than British trio Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Sam Walker, overnight pacesetter Martin Erlandsson of Sweden and Dane Soren Kjeldsen.

Foster set the early target after a morning of high winds at the Ryder Cup venue, carding the day's joint-best score of six-under 66.

Derksen matched him with a 68, finishing his round just before the siren went to signal a 15-minute suspension while the downpour subsided.

揑'm delighted with five birdies on a tough day,
