Second title for Ramdan in Europe
KUALA LUMPUR: An ambitious plan to get valuable exposure in Europe is beginning to bear fruit for reigning men’s singles national champion Misbun Ramdan Misbun of Nusa Mahsuri. Yesterday, the 22-year-old Ramdan landed his second international title when he crushed Lucas Corvee of France 21-11, 21-12 in the final of the Forza Slovenia International in Medvode, Slovenia. Two weeks ago, he bagged the Portugal International title. But, last week, he lost to Denmark’s former world junior champion Viktor Axelson in the semi-finals of the Danish International. Ramdan was accompanied by his father and former national coach Misbun Sidek to all these tournaments. Based on the results, it looks like Misbun is determined to turn his son into a world-beater – just like how he had worked his magic with Rashid Sidek, Roslin Hashim, Hafiz Hashim and current world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei. Ramdan’s trip is funded by the Sports Ministry, who have pumped in quite a hefty sum to the professional club. The Ministry and the club are also conducting nationwide coaching clinics carried out by Misbun and Rahman Sidek under the professional club’s development programme. Since ending his two-year tie with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in January to start afresh with his father, Ramdan’s focus has been on Europe. He also took part in the German Open (lost in first round), Swiss Open (first round), Polish Open (semi-finals) and Dutch International (quarter-finals). His last tournament under the BAM banner was at the Malaysian Open in January, when he crashed out in the opening round of the qualifying tournament. By competing in Europe over the last three months, Ramdan’s world ranking has improved from 87th to 60th. He is the country’s eighth ranked player after world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, Liew Daren (world No. 12), Chong Wei Feng (No. 13), Mohd Arif Abdul Latif (No. 32), Tan Chun Seang (No. 37), Goh Soon Huat (No. 55) and Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin (No. 58). Soon Huat and Iskandar enjoyed a great jump in their world rankings when they moved 17 and 10 spots up respectively in the latest list following their impressive semi-final and final finishes in the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara last week.
