'ramainya orang'... .. mungkin teruja sambutan yang diberikan kepadanya. Alhamdullilah.Hospital tu dinamakan Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Najihah sempena nama emak saudaranya....

Tapi bukankah TN sepatutnya volunteer tuk kluar tanpa perlu di minta oleh sesiapa...

Mungkin bkn TM yg minta tpi pegawai2 yg terlibat  ' menghalau' kerna mereka perlu bersedia tuk TM n family masuk...

Byk lagi Istana/mansion lain..yang rasmi bagilah pada yg berhak...

nasib baik ydp NS skrg tuanku muhriz...mmg betul ler anak dier terlampa western tapi bukan semuer lah..naquiyuddin dan imran jer yg selalu kluar case di newpaper kan. Almahrhum tuanku jaafar baik dan humble.....semua ruler minat kat dier.kesian lah anak laki dua tu jadi cam tu.tak baik mau hantam teruk tuanku jaafar.Allah yg bless dia supaya good life  mesti dier org baik to deserve everything he went through for 86 good years.org dlm thread ni takdo respect langsung.

UNIVERSITI Kebangsaan Malaysia started the new year with a deep sense of loss: its long-serving chancellor, Tuanku Ja'afar, the ruler of Negri Sembilan, died on Dec 27 last year.


Since he was proclaimed chancellor on April 16, 1976, Tuanku epitomised everything that university education should bring to the thousands of students who pass through our portals every year.

His academic excellence was not only in the Law degree he obtained from Nottingham, but obvious in the relentless pursuit of Economics at Oxford, as well as Political Science and French at the London School of Economics.

Sportsmanship, appreciation of the arts and culture, a carriage so refined and dignified, wisdom magnified with humility, and a wonderful sense of humour, barely describe a personality so expansive.

My first encounter with Tuanku was on March 10, 1979, when he was making his first official visit to the Faculty of Medicine in Jalan Raja Muda. After planting a royal palm, which stands majestically red today, he toured the faculty and entered the tutorial class I was conducting with a group of first-year medical students.

He asked what we were discussing and then proceeded to ask me some questions on the topic. Before he left, he turned to the bemused students and, with the characteristic twinkle in the eye and upturned lips, he said: "Shall we give her an A?"

That was my first glimpse of Tuanku's sense of humour, which many years later I came to quickly detect and enjoy as vice-chancellor.

Of all his official duties at UKM, he enjoyed being with the students the most. He never failed to officiate at the Pesta Konvo organised by them. He took keen interest in every item and inquired about each participating student. I had to be ready with information such as the students' names, their academic programmes and years of enrolment and, most important of all, if they were from Negri Sembilan. If they were, I would have to state the exact district. I am thankful for the Blackberry which allowed me to have information literally at my finger tips!

During these tete-a-tetes, I discovered the fantastic memory he had of many remote events, drawn from and coloured by his wide administrative experience within and outside the country.

I was pleasantly surprised one day by Tuanku's recollection of my father, Datuk Syed Hasan, the state secretary of Kedah at our nation's independence, and his role in the Kedah delegation asking for the hand of Tuanku's sister, the late Tuanku Bahiyah, in marriage to the Raja Muda, now Sultan Abdul Halim. Tuanku vividly remembered the event because he was leader of the Negri Sembilan delegation.

His passion for sports enthused us in no small measure. In my second week as vice-chancellor, I received a command from Tuanku to look seriously into improving the status of cricket in UKM. He wanted UKM to collaborate with the Malay Cricket Association of Malaysia, of which he was president, so that the young cricketers he had systematically trained would continue to be nurtured in the universities.

Today, UKM has one of the finest cricket teams in the country. Tuanku inaugurated the first inter-varsity Tuanku Ja'afar tournament in 2007 and the first Asian University Invitational last year.



It was also during these tournaments that Tuanku inducted me into the cricket code of his alma mater, Malay College Kuala Kangsar, such as the unforgettable "kanji the bowler!"

A few days before his passing, Tuanku must have been very pleased with the national team's victory in Sri Lanka and the selection of UKM's Ahmad Faiz Mohd Nor as the best batsman (score 168 in 50 overs). Ahmad Faiz, a first-year student, is also the captain of Malaysia's under-19 World Cup team.

Tuanku ardently believed that sports is good for character-building and refined behaviour. I was witness to this exemplary behaviour. When he was the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku regularly graced the golf charity tournaments organised by the National Council of Women's Organisations. In one tournament, his ball came flying in the direction of my buggy, which I was sharing with Tunku Ampuan. He immediately drove over to apologise. I was completely speechless. Since then, I have been humbled to keep to the high standards of golf etiquette that Tuanku demonstrated.

Last year, UKM celebrated its 38th year, 32 of them under the patronage of Tuanku. During this period, just as our scientists named the ecosystem engineer cicada, Puranoides jaafari, after him, he steered UKM through numerous challenges and opportunities in meeting our mission as a national university.

During convocation, he would nod with pleasure when I reported our many achievements as a research university. When our performance was not up to the mark, he spurred us on, always believing that we had not realised our full potential. He paid special attention to our THES ranking and was extremely pleased with our notable improvement last year.

Tuanku carried out his royal tasks dutifully no matter how arduous they may have been. Whether it was standing for hours, greeting and handing out scrolls to graduates, or officiating at the passing-out parade and commissioning almost 1,000 reserve officers of the Territorial Army, he demonstrated the resolve that all of us should discipline in ourselves.

He inspired us to dream and to nurture possibilities. We must continue to pursue the high standards he expected of us. This is how our sense of loss will be turned into driving ambition. Tuanku would want it no other way.
