Malay Heritage Centre
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Malay royals say Singapore grabbed ancestral land
KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Reuters) - Descendants of Singapore's old Malay royal family are demanding compensation from the city state for using a plot of land they say is theirs, a move that could mar the island's bid to celebrate its Malay heritage.
Singapore, whose Malay minority sometimes complains of racial discrimination, has built a Malay heritage centre on the land, irking a group of 96 Malays who claim descent from Sultan Hussain Mahomed Shah, an early 19th century ruler of the island.
"They never answer our letters," said Tengku Othman Tengku A. Aziz, a sixth-generation descendant of Sultan Hussain, adding that the Singapore government had turned the sultan's old palace into a heritage centre without compensating his descendants.
"They just take our land without permission and open their centre," he said in the Malaysian capital.
Singapore officials were not immediately available for comment.
The centre, situated on 56-acre plot in central Singapore, houses a typical "kampong" or village house of the 1960s and is a repository of items of Malay literature, film and art such as the works of Zubir Said, composer of Singapore's national anthem.
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is due to open the centre on June 4. Singapore's population is more than three-quarters ethnic Chinese, with ethnic Malays accounting for 14 percent, and ethnic Indians for another 8 percent.
Repeated attempts to negotiate with the government have hit a wall of silence, said Tengku Othman, who runs a landscaping company in Petaling Jaya, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur.
"If Singapore plays a deaf ear, I may go to the International Court of Justice and claim the whole island of Singapore," Tengku Othman, a Malaysian citizen, told reporters on Friday.
Singapore was part of Malaysia before the two formally split in 1965. The island's business and government run with clockwork efficiency but some analysts say it has emphasised efficacy at the expense of its culture.
Authorities in Singapore worry that their citizens, among the most affluent in Southeast Asia, are losing touch with their cultural roots and historical links.
"It is not only unfair. They disregard the existence of the royal family. Even the British were not as harsh as them, the British they housed my family," said Tengku Othman, referring to the land British colonial officials allotted to his ancestor.

Malay royals say Singapore grabbed ancestral land
KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Reuters) - D ...
Historically the piece of land about 56 acres at Kampung Gelam was given to the decendent of Sultan Hussin Mahomed Shah as token for the family to generate some kind of incomes. Allowance from the state ceased because the British no longer recognise him as the ruler of Johor. The title has gone to the Bugis Chieften. . The land was the center of dispute among the waris-waris and the High Court decided to return the title back the state. Legally they all have lost the title long time ago.
Another big issue was, Sultan Ali the son of Hussain was a compulsive gambler and under serious debt because monies borrowed for the Indian Cheety. He became a thorn in the British's butt .He pressured the British to bale him which the British refused. So they all live in poverty till today.
The goverment of Singapore has no choice but to recover and develop the land as Malay Heritage because the old palace and the area was in such a dilapidated condition.

Saya munkin sudah ff: tapi kalau anda mau cerita lanjut sila baca 'The Myths of a Lazy Native' oleh Proffesor Syed Najib Alattas.
Salam thamrong.

I don't need to mention about the Chinese, Egyptian or for that matter the Roman Imperial misdeeds. Anyway they throw away the unworthy baggage long time ago. Are you ashamed when the subject is raised openly? Or you are still in a state of denial.:hmm::hmm:
History is not about legends and myths. The new generation needs to know the real history. The real history is about truths. Why it took the British to tell the Malay raja to abolish slavery? Who are the slaves during that period? Why the raja surrendered the sovereignty just to pacify the two warring Chinese kongsi-gelap? Why the raja-raja unanimously signed the formation of the Malayan Union knowingly that the Malays have no secured place in the new state.
There is no malice in my posting. Our people are still gripped with the crushing poverty (Urban and rural alike). Signs are everywhere and things are no getting any batter. I am not offering any apology. TQ |

Pertama, aku tidak meminta kau meminta maaf. Dan aku tidak berniat samasekali. Cuma aku nak tahu apa niat kau tulis begitu?
Semua orang tahu sejarah. Generasi baru pun tahu mengenai sejarah.
Jika anda ingin terus menulis tentang sejarah silam bangsa melayu, silakan.

KRANJI WAR MEMORIAL
Kranji is one of many War Cemeteries which are under the care of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in countries around the world. It is situated on a hill in the North of Singapore Island, not far from the Causeway Connecting Singapore to Johor Bahru. Pre-war, Kranji was a British military camp, where a large ammunition dump was situated before the war with Japan. Close by is the mouth of the Kranji River where the Japanese Imperial Guards Division landed on 9th February 1942, the day after the landings at Sarimbun.
Following the Japanese occupation of Singapore, Kranji became a POW camp, with a POW hospital close by at Woodlands. A cemetery for prisoners was started at Kranji, and after the war, in 1946, it was decided to move war graves from Changi, Buona Vista and other cemeteries to Kranji which would be designated as Singapore's War Cemetery. Graves were also moved to Kranji from as far afield as Saigon where they could not be maintained. |

Graves from the Christian Bidadari Cemetery were also later moved to Kranji.
There are 4,461 War Graves in Kranji with 1,289 being unidentified. The Memorial Panels are inscribed with the names of over 24,000 casualties who have no known grave.
Following the withdrawal of British forces from Singapore in 1971, The Singapore Government moved burials from The Pasir Panjang and Ulu Pandan Military Cemeteries to Kranji. This delicate work was carried out from 1975-1976. The new Military Cemetery was created on the western slope of Kranji Hill beside the War Cemetery. In 2004, more graves from Bidadari Cemetery were also moved to the Military Cemetery. The Military Cemetery contains 1,785 graves and has two Gardens of Remembrance. Some of the moved burials were cremated at the wish of relatives. The ashes of some of these were returned home and the remainder were scattered on these gardens. |

The Kranji War Memorial off Woodlands Road of Singapore actually consists of the State Cemetery, War Graves, Military Graves and the Memorial Wall. 4500 allied servicemen are buried in the War Graves and over 25000 names of allied servicemen who died in the South-East Asia theatre of WWII are commemorated on the walls of the great winged memorial. At the Western corner of the War Memorial are graves of commonwealth soldiers who died during the Confrontation and Malayan Communist Insurgency. Two early presidents of Singapore are buried in the State Cemetery at Northern end of the Memorial. The Memorial is immaculately maintained by the Commomwealth War Graves Commission. It is a fitting tribute for those who 'died for all free men' in the greatest conflict of modern history. |
