Fully digital TV age

MCMC tender bids to pave the way
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will call for tender bids in the third quarter for the UHF 470-742 megahertz spectrum which will pave the way for the country to move into the digital television (TV) era.
Although satellite TV player Astro is already on the digital wave, the last remaining stronghold of the old analogue technology is still the country抯 free-to-air TV services such as RTM 1 and 2, TV3, NTV7, 8TV and Channel 9.
The awarding of the spectrum will see the winner having to build a single digital terrestrial transmission/TV broadcast (DTTB) infrastructure for all broadcasters to ride on to transmit their TV programmes.
揝ubject to government approval, we plan it to be a beauty contest-type of tender bid. We will announce the winner at the end of this year or early 2010,拻 MCMC chief operating officer Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi told StarBiz.
The winner has to commence digital roll-out soon after the award and the analogue switch-off is planned for 2015.
Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) started its trials for digital terrestrial TV since early September 2006.

Moving towards digital TV
By JOSEPH LOH
(Sumber: http://thestar.com.my/news/story ... 74109&sec=focus)
Most Malaysians may not be aware of this, but come 2012, all terrestrial free-to-air television here will be transmitted digitally, with analogue signal shut-off slated for 2015. What are the benefits of going digital and will it involve unnecessary costs for consumers?
IMAGINE a woman watching her favourite soap opera on an entertainment-only channel. During the break, an advertisement for a pair of shoes so catches her fancy that she immediately picks up the remote control and places an order for it. Meanwhile, the man of the house waits impatiently for the transaction to go through, anxious to catch the live football match showing on another channel dedicated to sports. As he settles down to watch the big game, the children rush into the room, hoping to catch their favourite cartoon on the kids |

Are you ready for DTTB?
(sumber: http://thestar.com.my/news/story ... 33190&sec=focus)
REST assured, your existing analogue television will still work and you do not have to spend money buying a new or even high-definition TV set when Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) starts here.
However, you will see significant improvements in picture and sound with a new digital TV, more so if the transmission is in high definition.

Creative industry to benefit from new system
(sumber: http://thestar.com.my/news/story ... 33150&sec=focus)
FORMER Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek believes that the digitalisation of Malaysia抯 television broadcast system will present a fantastic opportunity to the local creative industry.
If everything goes as planned, Malaysia will have 19 channels of television to fill, which by his estimates will equate to about 110,000 hours of airtime. Seven channels will be run by RTM, while the rest are for private free-to-air broadcasters such as TV3 and 8TV. The seven RTM channels will be TV1 (news); TV2 (drama and film); Musik Aktif (music); Harmoni (multi-lingual and ethnic); Arena (sports); CY (children and youth) and Bestari (special programmes, lifestyle and government-related content).

Era pendigitalan siaran televisyen menyaksikan rakyat Malaysia dijangka menonton tambahan 20 saluran baru RTM.
TENGAH malam 1 Jun lalu, Radio dan Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) sekalilagi menjenamakan semua stesen radionya dengan tambahan perkataan RadioMalaysia. Perubahan dibuat tanpa sebarang publisiti malah secaramengejut.
Namun bagi pendengar setia tujuh stesen kebangsaan dan 27 stesentempatan RTM di seluruh negara, mereka mungkin terpinga-pinga. Tarikhitu menyaksikan juruhebah RTM mula merujuk nama stesen sebagai 慖nilahRadio Malaysia |
