Afghan Girl in 'National Geographic'

The image of the Afghan girl who appeared on the cover of National Geographic back in 1985 is one of the magazine's most famous photos, and now the publication is delving deeper into her identity. In an article on their website, they finally explain exactly who she is.
The Afghan girl, then and now (NationalGeographic.com)
Her name is Sharbat Gula, and she belongs to the Afghan Pashtun tribe. The photo was taken by Steve McCurry, and Gula became famous after the haunting image of her made its way around the world -- except no one knew her name.
In January, 17 years after the photo was first taken, McCurry went searching for Gula again. He found her in Pakistan with her family and three children. She said she's never felt safe, "But life under the Taliban was better. At least there was peace and order |
