Knee injury may force shuttler Julia out of world meet

SEPANG: Singles shuttler Julia Wong was hoping to contribute to Malaysia抯 cause in her debut outing in the Sudirman Cup world mixed team championship in Guangzhou. Instead she returned home prematurely in pain and in a wheelchair.
Julia made a painful exit after coming down with a left knee injury during her match in the Division One Group A tie against Hong Kong on Monday. And she is fearing the worse as the injury could turn out to be more serious than thought.

GUANGZHOU: Coach Rexy Mainaky wants the doubles pairs to pull up their socks in the tie against Denmark to keep alive Malaysia抯 hopes of advancing to the Sudirman Cup semi-finals.
Rexy, who acknowledged that the performances of his players needed to be stepped up by another gear to keep Malaysia抯 challenge going in the championships, said that the facts were crystal clear and winning both the singles matches would not be enough to mount a serious challenge.
He added that the performance of the doubles players, including the mixed pair, was not convincing in the two ties against South Korea and Hong Kong.
揑 know how important it is for us to do well in all the three doubles but I must admit that things are not going the way I had wanted. The Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong combination have not been up to the mark, especially in the defeat by the Koreans (Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung),
PETALING JAYA: When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. And shuttler Lee Chong Wei has vowed not to let the Malaysian team down when they play against Denmark in their final Group A tie of the Sudirman Cup world mixed team championships in Guangzhou tomorrow.
The world No. 1 is expecting to face top Dane Peter-Gade Christensen. The last time Chong Wei played against Christensen was in the final of the Korean Open in January and the Dane prevented the Malaysian from securing a third consecutive title.
Chong Wei had won the Super Series Master Finals crown in Kota Kinabalu last December and went on to lift the Malaysian Open title the following month.
In the Sudirman Cup, Malaysia have to beat Denmark to meet their target to reach the semi-finals. In their opening tie on Sunday, Malaysia were beaten 2-3 by South Korea but they bounced back to beat Hong Kong 4-1 on Monday.
Denmark opened their campaign on Sunday by beating Hong Kong 3-2 and last night lost 1-4 to the Koreans.
And Chong Wei is determined to rally the team by getting the better of Christensen this time.
