Business Plan Content
Business plans are decision-making tools. There is no fixed contentfor a business plan. Rather the content and format of the business planis determined by the goals and audience. A business plan should containwhatever information is needed to decide whether or not to pursue agoal.
For example, a business plan for a non-profit might discuss the fit between the business plan and the organization抯 mission. Banks are quite concerned about defaults, so a business plan for a bank loan will build a convincing case for the organization抯 ability to repay the loan. Venture capitalists are primarily concerned about initial investment, feasibility, and exit valuation. A business plan for a project requiring equity financing will need to explain why current resources, upcoming growth opportunities, and sustainable competitive advantage will lead to a high exit valuation.
Preparing a business plan draws on a wide range of knowledge from many different business disciplines: finance, human resource management, intellectual property management, supply chain management, operations management, and marketing, among others.[6]. It can be helpful to view the business plan as a collection of sub-plans, one for each of the main business disciplines.[7]

Competitor analysis

Competitor analysis in marketing and strategic management is an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of current and potential competitors. This analysis provides both an offensive and defensive strategiccontext through which to identify opportunities and threats. Competitorprofiling coalesces all of the relevant sources of competitor analysisinto one framework in the support of efficient and effective strategyformulation, implementation, monitoring and adjustment.[1]
Given that competitor analysis is an essential component ofcorporate strategy, Porter (1980, 1998) argued that most firms do notconduct this type of analysis systematically enough. Instead, manyenterprises operate on what he calls “informal impressions, conjectures, and intuition gained through the tidbits of informationabout competitors every manager continually receives.” As a result, traditional environmental scanning places many firms at risk ofdangerous competitive blindspots due to a lack of robust competitoranalysis [2].

Writing the Business Plan: Section 8                The Cash Flow Projection

The Cash Flow Projection shows how cash is expected toflow in and out of your business. For you, it's an important tool forcash flow management, letting you know when your expenditures are toohigh or when you might want to arrange short term investments to dealwith a cash flow surplus. As part of your business plan, a Cash FlowProjection will give you a much better idea of how much capitalinvestment your business idea needs.
For a bank loans officer, the Cash Flow Projection offers evidencethat your business is a good credit risk and that there will be enoughcash on hand to make your business a good candidate for a line ofcredit or short term loan.
Do not confuse a Cash Flow Projection with a Cash Flow Statement. The Cash Flow Statement shows how cash has flowed in and out of yourbusiness. In other words, it describes the cash flow that has occurredin the past. The Cash Flow Projection shows the cash that isanticipated to be generated or expended over a chosen period of time inthe future.
While both types of Cash Flow reports are important businessdecision-making tools for businesses, we're only concerned with theCash Flow Projection in the business plan. You will want to show CashFlow Projections for each month over a one year period as part of theFinancial Plan portion of your business plan.
There are three parts to the Cash Flow Projection. The first partdetails your Cash Revenues. Enter your estimated sales figures for eachmonth. Remember that these are Cash Revenues; you will only enter thesales that are collectible in cash during the specific month you aredealing with.
The second part is your Cash Disbursements. Take the various expensecategories from your ledger and list the cash expenditures you actuallyexpect to pay that month for each month.
The third part of the Cash Flow Projection is the Reconciliation ofCash Revenues to Cash Disbursements. As the word "reconciliation"suggests, this section starts with an opening balance which is thecarryover from the previous month's operations. The current month'sRevenues are added to this balance; the current month's Disbursementsare subtracted, and the adjusted cash flow balance is carried over tothe next month.
