Boks to gauge their strength in opener against Samoa
PARIS: South Africa test their World Cup credentials against the rugged Samoans today in Paris in a warm-up for their Pool A decider against defending champions England next Friday.
The Springboks, who were knocked out in the quarter-finals in 2003, have had a relatively smooth preparation compared to their own rocky standards and are regarded as one of few sides capable of stopping the All Blacks from ruling the world.
The 1995 world champions' buildup to the previous World Cup included the notorious Kamp Staaldraad (camp barbed wire), in which the players were forced to stay overnight and naked in a muddy pit.
They endured no such trials this time.
揟his squad is as settled as it has ever been in the last decade, |

Speedy winger fires South Africa to victory over rugged Samoa
PARIS: Fleet-footed South Africa left wing Bryan Habana scored four tries yesterday as the Springboks opened their World Cup campaign by beating a rugged Samoa side 59-7.
South Africa top Group A after gaining the bonus point which eluded defending champions England in their 28-10 win over the United States on Saturday. The teams meet in the pivotal pool clash on Friday.

Fijians bank on their foreign legion
FIJI open their campaign against Japan tomorrow looking to their collection of exiles, who ply their club trade in Australia, New Zealand, England and France, to spark a quarter-final push.
With a professional core, coach Ilivasi Tabua hopes his team can grab the runners-up spot in Group B behind Australia but ahead of Wales.
揊or me, it's clearly an advantage, |

Argentina gunning for big win against Georgia
ARGENTINA made another statement for inclusion in a top annual competition with their win over France but their treatment as second class citizens is manifest in having to play their second World Cup match four days later.
The Pumas, who upset the hosts 17-12 in the tournament's opening match at the Stade de France, meet Georgia in the next Group D game at the Gerland stadium today before some teams have even begun their campaigns.
揘one of the (other) top eight teams in the world will play two games in such a short time, |

S. Africa confident they can beat world champs England
SOUTH Africa will beat world champions England in their crucial World Cup clash on Friday, Springboks coach Jake White claimed after his side walloped Samoa 59-7.
White said he wasn't basing his optimism on the poor performance of England in their 28-10 win over the United States or the 1995 world champions' comprehensive defeat of a tough Samoa side, but on more solid factors.
揑 don't think my confidence is based on what happened on Saturday or on Sunday, |

Vickery may miss clash with the Boks
ENGLAND captain Phil Vickery has been cited for kicking Paul Emerick during his side's 28-10 victory over the United States on Saturday and could miss Friday's key group clash with South Africa.
World Cup organisers said yesterday that the prop had been cited for the incident when he appeared to trip Emerick as the centre made a break in the first half.
Vickery was reported by New Zealander Steven Heines, the match citing commissioner, who under tournament rules had to decide if the incident would have merited a red card had the referee seen it.
Asked about the incident on Saturday, Vickery said: 揑t was just instinctive to try to stop him, unfortunately I tapped him, luckily he got up. There was certainly no malice on my part. |
