OK, a little preview about the new dorama dalam pasaran...

Last Christmas (Fuji TV 2004)

No. of episodes: 11

Cast: Yuji Oda, Akiko Yada, Hiroshi Tamaki, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Mirai Moriyama, Nana Katase, Megumi, Ryou

Last Christmas,
I gave you my heart,
But the very next day,
You gave it away...

Synopsis:

The drama centers around Haruki Kenji (Oda Yuji) who used to be a professional skier and is now an upper staff member at a company that manufactures ski equipment. The company is also a main focus of the drama as most of the characters in this drama also work there. The female lead is Aoi Yuki (Yada Akiko), an office lady (OL) who has just been transferred to the same section Haruki works in. Actually, Haruki had met her once before - by coincidence years earlier when his company was attending a ski competition abroad. By some coincidence, she also moves into the apartment adjacent to Haruki's. Actually, their apartments used to be one single unit, and they are now divided only by a single door in between. In the first episode, the two become more well acquainted when Yuki comes home drunk and has forgotten her key. She bursts into Haruki's place in order to utilize the door between their two apartments and manages to break down the door so she can get into her own apartment.

Quotes:

Yuki: Good night!
Haruki: "Good night"?
Yuki: Ahhh! Oops...
Haruki: Uhh. You really don't remember me?
Yuki: If you're trying to hit on me, could you save it for tomorrow?
Haruki: No. That's not it. (Yuki brings her face close) Uhh. Excuse me.
Yuki: Yes?
Haruki: Your face is too close.
Yuki: I can't help it! I lost my contacts!

Life more dramatic than drama

Wm. Penn Special to The Daily Yomiuri

...It is hard to compete with all these tantalizing real-life dramas, but the viewing public has voted with their remotes and selected the winners of the private networks' winter-season drama ratings sweepstakes. And they are...a lovable teacher-cum-lady-yakuza and a massive imaginary earthquake.

Yukie Nakama leads the way with Gokusen II (Saturdays, NTV network, 9 p.m.) which boasts solid Video Research ratings in the 25 percent to 27 percent range. The show may be a perfect clone of Gokusen I, but Nakama has perfected the role and the series relieves viewers' stress and satisfies their desire for justice. In a way, she is a 21st-century Mito Komon.

Second place goes to the emergency room crew at Kyumei Byoto Mijuyoji (Tuesdays, 9 p.m. Fuji network) which is teaching the public the meaning of triage while staying in the 18 percent to 20 percent range.

With cedar pollen in the air, can the new spring TV season be far behind? Takuya Kimura will return to reinvigorate the 9 p.m. Monday slot at Fuji. Aya Ueto, who got a serious workout as a tennis star in the 2004 series Ace o Nerae, will be getting her exercise on the volleyball court from April as TV Asahi presents a dramatized version of the manga hit Attack No. 1.

NTV may have figured out a way to take a considerable chunk of the morning TV market. Starting March 2, it will run the South Korean drama Pari no Koibito (Lover in Paris, Mondays through Thursdays, 10:25-11:20 a.m.). With the relatively low ratings for prime-time dramas this quarter, they might have done even better putting this series in the evening line-up.

Morning TV also seems to be on the mind of Monta Mino, the master of ceremonies on a wide array of evening variety shows and the famed host of Omoikkiri Terebi (weekdays, noon-1:55 p.m., NTV network). But not even all this is enough to fill his schedule. He appears ready to take over a revamped version of the TBS weekday morning show Watch (5:30-8:30 a.m.) from April too. We might as well just give him his own network and call it Mino 24/7.

When TV Asahi's News Station ended last March, Televiews predicted Hiroshi Kume would return to the small screen--and he has. The TV world's other golden guy will be back in April with his own informational-variety show Sunday nights on NTV.

Meanwhile, I battle on against that nasty concept known as "rusuban." It was used again last week by NHK to describe an unattended 5-year-old who had fallen from a high-rise apartment balcony.

The dictionary definition is: "remain at home; look after the house while a person is away." That's a lot of work for a 5-year-old. The media definition of the term is just another one of those acceptable euphemisms used to cloak serious issues that need attention.

And so, children continue to die unnecessary deaths in fires and falls because they were left at home alone to fend for themselves.

The media need to start campaigning against this unacceptable, but widely accepted practice, just as they finally woke up to the dangers of passive smoking and the necessity of car safety seats.

More child care facilities are the real answer, of course, but raising consciousness in the media would be a start. It will not be easy. Not only is the term widely used to blur coverage of such preventable tragedies, but the networks indirectly condone the practice by airing dramas in which likeable, well-intentioned characters played by popular actors routinely leave their kids home alone.

Tsuyoshi Kusanagi's big 2004 hit Boku to Kanojo to Kanojo no Ikiru Michi regularly featured his little first grader daughter in a high-rise by herself. This quarter, one of my favorite dramas, 87 Percent Watashi no Go-nen Seizonritsu (Wednesdays, 10 p.m., NTV), features a heroine with a very strong sense of justice, but she still leaves her 9-year-old son home alone far too much. As she prepares to be hospitalized for a breast cancer operation, she is seen packing him dinners to be microwaved while she is gone, not finding a babysitter. He is portrayed as capable of caring for himself.

How many children have to die needlessly before the media gets the wake-up call?
