North and south are poles apart
Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan described his side's performance in the 32-17 defeat of minnows Namibia as horrible.
But that damning criticism could well have been applied by coaches of the other northern hemisphere heavyweights after their first matches in the World Cup.
While all apart from Italy and Six Nations titleholders France emerged victorious, it was hardly with a flourish.
While South Africa, Australia and New Zealand were racking up overwhelming victories over Samoa, Japan and Italy respectively, England, Ireland and Wales were scraping past the United States, Namibia and Canada.
Scotland, too, had some awkward moments in their 56-10 win over debutants Portugal, a team made up of amateurs.
Realistically only France and Six Nations Triple Crown holders Ireland entered the World Cup as viable contenders for the William Webb Ellis trophy.
Ironically, they were the poorest performers.
The Irish were honest enough to admit to how dreadful they had been against a side that conceded more than 100 points to South Africa in a warm-up match.
While England coach Brian Ashton said England would be sharper for Friday's crucial clash with South Africa the veteran coach was not supported back at home by the media.
The Mail on Sunday said the good news from the game with the United States was England won 28-10 and there were no significant injuries to players.

Wilkinson out of crucial tie against Boks
JONNY Wilkinson was ruled out of England's Group A match against South Africa in Paris on Friday with a ligament sprain in his right ankle, coach Brian Ashton announced here yesterday.
England's problems at outside-half were compounded by a hip injury sustained by Olly Barkley, Wilkinson's replacement in the champions' tournament opening 28-10 win against the United States last Saturday, during training yesterday.

Kiwis cast aside personal pain for collective gain
WITH a strength in depth other countries can but dream of, the All Blacks insist there are no personal sour grapes about missing out on team selection for the collective good of the bid for World Cup glory.
New Zealand launched an impressive 11-try blitz on a shellshocked Italy in their opening match here on Saturday, and look to set to coast through other Group C games against Portugal, Scotland and Romania.
Coach Graham Henry was in the enviable position of leaving such gnarly veterans as prop Greg Somerville, and backs Nick Evans and Joe Rokocoko kicking their heels in the stands for the opener against the Azzurri.
A bitter pill to swallow for players who would surely waltz into many a starting team at the World Cup? Not so, apparently, as Henry seems to have drummed in a message that personal pain must be cast aside for collective gain.
Flying Fiji-born winger Rokocoko, who has notched up an amazing tally of 38 tries in his 45 Tests, is in direct competition with the onfire duo of Siteni Sivivatu and Doug Howlett for a place on the wing.
Howlett scored a hat-trick and Sivivatu a brace against Italy, the former equalling Christian Cullen's try-scoring record of 46 for the All Blacks in the process.
And Rokocoko, likely to be unleashed on Portugal in New Zealand's second gool game in Lyon on Saturday, admitted he was 揺ager to play |

Fiji hold off Japan, Tonga make US eat humble pie
FIJI withstood a determined fightback from Japan to win a thrilling Group B clash 35-31 yesterday and get their World Cup campaign off to a perfect start.
The Pacific Islanders scored their fourth try 10 minutes from fulltime to seal a hard-earned victory and a bonus point after the lead had changed hands six times in the closest game of the tournament.
| Stopped: Mike Hercus of the US is tackled by two Tonga players during their Group A match in Montpellier yesterday. Tonga won 25-15.
|
Fijian openside flanker Akapusi Qera scored two tries and centre Seru Rabeni and lock Kele Leawere crossed once each while flyhalf Nicky Little added three penalties and three conversions to become the 13th player to pass 600 points in international rugby.
New Zealand-born lock Luke Thompson scored twice and prop Tomokazu Soma once for Japan, who were thrashed 91-3 by Australia at the weekend, and they earned the consolation of a bonus point for losing by less than seven points.
稩n Group A, the tiny South Pacific kingdom of Tonga humbled the United States 25-15 in their opening match yesterday to effectively end the Americans |

England replace injured Barkley with Farrell
FLYHALF Olly Barkley has been ruled out of England抯 World Cup Group A game against South Africa tomorrow and will be replaced by Andy Farrell, team officials said yesterday.
Barkley, himself a replacement for ankle injury victim Jonny Wilkinson, damaged a hip flexor in training on Tuesday and the results of a scan on the injury yesterday forced coach Brian Ashton to rearrange his team again.
Farrell will take on the number 10 duties, including the goal-kicking, a role he has never assumed in a first team union match.
Mike Catt, who turns 36 next week, remains at inside centre and offers kicking cover but England are still at a huge disadvantage in their most important group game. |

Veteran du Randt still a huge worry for champs England
SOUTH Africa great Os du Randt may be 35 but that doesn抰 lessen England抯 respect for the powerhouse prop.
Reigning world champions England will look to end a three-match losing streak against the Springboks when they meet in tomorrow抯 potentially decisive Group A clash in Paris.
They head into the game on the back of a disappointing 28-10 win against minnows the United States in their opening match where the Eagles matched them physically up front.
揥hen you see a performance like that you pretty fervently hope you抣l never see anything like it again, |
