It抯 on to Paris but Danish trip still hangs in the balance for Chong Wei
By LIM TEIK HUAT
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia抯 top singles player Lee Chong Wei is still unsure about competing in the Danish Open next week but the French Open from Oct 28-Nov 2 is definitely on his schedule.
The current world number one said that he would decide on his participation in Odense in the next two days and it would be based on his physical condition.
揑 will need to have a word with my coach (Misbun Sidek) first before making a final decision. But I will go to the French Open to protect my ranking position. It is a good opportunity for me to rake in ranking points because Lin Dan will not be competing, |

Tired Chong Wei decides to skip Danish Open
PETALING JAYA: World number one Lee Chong Wei has finally decided not to play in the Danish Open in Odense next week.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) general manager, Kenny Goh, said that Chong Wei informed them yesterday that he was not in his best condition to face a tough field.
揅hong Wei preferred to stay home to prepare for the French Open the following week (Oct 28-Nov 2) where he is the defending champion. He has discussed the matter with his coach (Misbun Sidek) before coming to the decision, |

Fairuzizuan-Zakry needs to do well in Odense
By LIM TEIK HUAT
PETALING JAYA: With the back-up pairs snapping at their heels, Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif will be under pressure to do well in the Danish Open next week.
The duo were seen as a rising pair in world badminton after winning back-to-back Super Series titles in the Singapore and Indonesia Opens in June.
They entered the top 10 in the rankings for the first time but their confidence took a big blow when they crashed out in the early rounds of the Japan Open and China Masters last month.
Fairuzizuan-Zakry lost to Indonesian back-up pair Muhammad Ahsan-Bona Septano in the second round in Japan and fell to another Indonesian combination, Hendra Gunawan-Joko Riyadi, also at the same stage in China.
Zakry, who has forged a partnership with Fairuzizuan for nearly two years, admitted that inconsistency was their most glaring weakness at this point.
揑t was also due to the fact that the tournament feeling was not there for us as we were sparring more with our team-mates (Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah) to get them ready for the Beijing Olympics in August, |

Chong Wei to help raise funds for coach Misbun抯 wife
KUALA LUMPUR: World number one men抯 singles shuttler Lee Chong Wei will play in an exhibition match to help raise funds to ease the financial burden of his coach Datuk Misbun Sidek.
Misbun is currently in China with his wife, Latifah, who is undergoing a kidney transplant.
Besides Chong Wei, the Sidek brothers - former internationals Jalani and Rashid - will also be involved in the Nov 7 exhibition at the Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara.
The exhibition is co-organised by radio station Sinar FM.
Misbun and international Mohd Roslin Hashim will also be involved in the match.
Said Chong Wei: 揇espite the condition of his wife, Misbun has never slacked in giving full attention to me.
揑n fact, he even sacrificed his Hari Raya celebrations to be with me during the Macau Open (earlier this month). We are doing the exhibition to help him out. |

Malaysians may be unable to stop their juggernauts
By RAJES PAUL
KUALA LUMPUR: In the absence of the world number one Lee Chong Wei, it will be a tall order for other Malaysians to pour cold water on the hot streak of the Indonesian men singles shuttlers at the Denmark Open, which begins tomorrow in Odense.
The Indonesians have been in fiery form since firing blanks at the Beijing Olympics in August.
On Sunday, Andre Kurniawan Tedjono capped a two-month run of great badminton by the Indonesians when he emerged as the Dutch Open champion with a 21-15, 11-21, 21-19 win over India抯 Chetan Anand.
Earlier, Simon Santoso bagged the Taiwan Open title last month followed by triumphs by Sony Dwi Kuncoro at the Japan Open and China Masters and Taufik Hidayat in the Macau Open.
Ready for battle: Mohd Hafiz will face a tricky first-round against India抯 Arvind Bhat.
Mohd Hafiz Hashim was slated to meet top seed Chong Wei in the second round of the Denmark Open but the Olympic Games silver medallist opted out to concentrate on his defence of the French Open title in Paris next week.
Hafiz has a tricky first-round match against India抯 Arvind Bhat. Simon is in the same quarter together with two KLRC Bhd players, Sairul Amar Ayob and Lee Tsuen Seang.
The others in the same half as Hafiz are China抯 Bao Chunlai and Taufik, who will be out to exact revenge on Wong Choong Hann in the first round. The Malaysian veteran had ended Taufik defence of the Olympic title in the first round in Beijing.
Hafiz抯 mission is to avoid an early round defeat.
揅hong Wei has withdrawn but it will not make much difference for me. I am not the fancied player and it will be a challenge to win every match. Hopefully, I can do well to improve on my world ranking, |

Fairuzizuan-Zakry mahu bangkit
![](http://www.utusan.com.my/pix/2008/1022/Utusan_Malaysia/Sukan/su_05.1.jpg)
MOHD. Zakry Latif (kanan) dan Mohd. Fairuzizuan Tazari mahu
melakarkan kejutan di Terbuka Denmark hari ini
KUALA LUMPUR – Selepas tenggelam dalam dua penampilan terakhir Siri Super - Terbuka Jepun dan China Masters bulan lalu, pasangan muda negara, Mohd. Fairuzizuan Tazari-Mohd. Zakry Latif mahu bangkit mencari keputusan terbaik apabila memulakan kempen badminton Terbuka Denmark, hari ini, lapor NORZIE MOHD. KHASBI.

- Utusan |

Scare for Hafiz as he scrapes past the opening round
KUALA LUMPUR: National men抯 singles shuttler Mohd Hafiz Hashim has one of the easiest draw but he made life difficult to reach the second round of the Denmark Open in Odense yesterday.
Yesterday, the father-to-be, who is seeking a revival in his career, almost blew it against India抯 Arvind Bhat but prevailed at the crucial stages for a 18-21, 21-15, 21-19 win in 48 minutes.
It was the first time that Hafiz cleared the opening round of a Super Series tournament this year. The world No. 34, who was a first-round casualty in the Open tournaments in Malaysia, South Korea, England, Indonesia and China, will take on Denmark抯 Hans-Kristian Vittinghus today for a place in the quarter-finals.
The absence of world number one Lee Chong Wei and the last-minute withdrawals of Indonesians Simon Santoso and Taufik Hidayat and China抯 Bao Chunlai have given Hafiz a clearer path to reach the semi-finals.
Former national player Wong Choong Hann also checked into the second round but not after flirting dangerously against Pawar Anand of India, who replaced the absent Taufik, in the first round.
Choong Hann won 17-21, 21-12, 21-18 and will take on the winner of the match between Joachim Persson of Denmark and Andrew Smith of England today.
In the men抯 doubles, Malaysia抯 Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari had easy rides into the second round.
Macau Open champions Kien Keat-Boon Heong will take on the winners of the match between Peter Buur Steffensen-Rasmus Mangor Andersen of Denmark and Baptiste Careme-Laurent Constantin of France while the first real test for Zakry-Fairuzizuan will be against Denmark抯 Simon Mollyhus-Anders Kristensen.
Men抯 singles: Mohd Hafiz Hashim (Mas) bt Arvind Bhat (Ind) 18-21, 21-15, 21-19; Wacha Przemyslaw (Pol) w.o. Simon Santoso (Ina); Bobby Milroy (Can) bt Petr Koukal (Cze) 22-20, 21-16;
Martin Delfs (Den) bt Brice Leverdez (Fra) 21-5, 18-21, 21-11; Eric Pang (Ned) bt Nguyen Tien Minh (Vie) 21-17, 21-17; Chetan Anand (Ind) bt Stefan Wojcikiewicz (Can) 21-6, 21-15; Dicky Palyama (Ned) bt Taufik Hidayat Akbar (Ina) 21-16, 21-18; Kasper Oedum (Swe) bt Chan Yan Kit (Hkg) 21-11, 21-6;

Men抯 doubles: Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari (Mas) bt Robert Adcock-Robin Midleton (Eng) 21-10, 21-18; Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong (Mas) bt Michael Fuchs-Ingo Kindervater (Ger) 21-10, 21-16; Kenichi Hayakawa-Kenta Kazuno (Jpn) bt Niklas Hoff-Peter Mork (Den) 21-15, 21-14; Jacob Chemnitz-Mikkel Delbo Larsen (Den) bt Martin Kragh-Tore Vilhelmsen (Den) 21-8, 21-11;
