Wales recover from shaky start to beat gritty Japan
| Final hurdle: Wales' Shane Williams (left) leaps past Japan's Hirotoki Onozawa to score a try during their Group B match in Cardiff on Thursday. Wales won 72-18.
|
CARDIFF: Wales recovered from a shaky start to beat Japan 72-18 in their Group B clash here on Thursday.
The win leaves the Welsh needing to beat Fiji next week to book their place in the quarter-finals. But although they outscored their opponents by 11 tries to two, this error-strewn performance was far from the clinical display head coach Gareth Jenkins was hoping for after Saturday's 32-20 defeat by Australia.
And Wales captain Stephen Jones, while happy with the victory, said his side had plenty of room for improvement against a Fiji team who will fancy their chances of upsetting the odds and advancing to the last eight.

Pumas eye big win to top their group
MARSEILLE: Argentina, determined to finish top of Group D and avoid a quarter-final clash against tournament favourites New Zealand, are targeting a big win against a weakened Namibia today.
揥ith the objectives we have set ourselves, we can't afford to be mediocre and say that all we have to do is win on Saturday, |

All Blacks, Wallabies crush opponents
EDINBURGH: New Zealand right wing Doug Howlett scored a record 47th try for his country yesterday during an untroubled 40-0 win over an under-strength Scotland side in their World Cup Group C match at Murrayfield.
Howlett overtook the tally he shared with Christian Cullen in the 15th minute when he scored in the corner after Luke McAlister and Leon MacDonald had swung the ball wide on the right.
| Hold on tight: New Zealand's Byron Kelleher (centre) is tackled by Scotland's players during their Group C match in Edinburgh yesterday. The Kiwis won 40-0.
|
He extended his mark to 48 seven minutes from fulltime when he veered left from broken play to score 15m from the left touchline.

Tonga set sights on beating England
PARIS: Tonga are one victory against defending champions England from a historic place in the World Cup quarter-finals, a remarkable transformation for the small Pacific island nation.
揥e have one more left, one against England (on Friday). It's going to be another hard one but if we keep believing in what we have been doing we have a good chance of winning, |

Rampant Pumas not taking Irish for granted
MARSEILLE: Argentina coach Marcelo Loffreda refused to take anything for granted after a 63-3 win over Namibia on Saturday left the Pumas on the verge of a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
揥e've had three games, we've got good results in all three and we are top of the group, |
