Saya Teluk Kelubi Buluh Kasap Yop. Sekolah diTangkak.
Kajian tentang cerita dongeng pernah dibukukan oleh kolonial Inggeris dalam 'Papers on Malay Subjects' edited by R.J. Wilkinson Acting Secretary to Resident, Perak. Standard handbook for the colonial officers in their departmental examination. I found the book somewhere in my grandma's house many years back...its probably gone now.

Aku rasa bukit tu pun dah takde sebab dijadikan kawasan perumahan.

Legends of Pulau Besar
Wish to post a story about my state:
The largest of eight islands off the coast of Malacca, Pulau Besar covers an area of approximately 133 hectares and is said to resemble the shape of a pregnant woman. In fact, the island has long been associated with intriguing legends and myths.
The most famous of these has it that several hundred years ago, a beautiful and kind-hearted princess of the Sultanate of Malacca fell in love with a fisherman from Sumatra. When the fisherman had to return to Sumatra, he promised the princess that he would return to marry her.
A few months later, misfortune was to befall the happy couple when the boat the fisherman was on, capsized on its way to Malacca after being caught in a raging storm. The young fisherman was to go down with the ship.
All this time, the princess had been waiting patiently for the fisherman's return. She was soon to discover that she was pregnant. Hearing no news and in total desperation, she threw herself into the sea. Legend has it that her body miraculously floated to the site of her lover's capsized ship and remained there. This is said to account for the shape of the island of Pulau Besar.
Another legend is about the shrine of the seven princesses The seven maidens were said to have been on their way to Pulau Besar from India in order to deepen their mysticism. Alas, their ship was also to sink along the way. The graves of the seven princesses were buried on the island and can still be seen until today.
There is a cave called "Yunos Cave". It is believed that in ancient times, warriors came to the cave to learn the art of mysticism. It was also used for the training of the art of 'silat', a form of martial arts.
And then there is the famous Batu Belah or Split Rock. When looking at the rock, you should bear in mind the story behind it. It tells the tale of a young apprentice who did not obey the teachings of his master who told him never to misuse his power. He choose not to heed this advice. Before he could repent, his master took out his sword and sliced the rock he was sitting on. The apprentice was to fall between the cracks, after which the rock was to mysteriously rejoin, trapping the apprentice forever.

"ABU NAWAS MAU TERBANG" (Hikayat 1001 Malam)
Rakyat mulai geram, "Ayo Abu, cepatlah terbang".
mau terbang?". Kali ini Abu lolos lagi. Rakyat dan Raja kena batunya, kalah lagi. |

Singapura dilangar Todak / The Invasion of the Swordfish in Singapore
Long after the reign of the powerful King Sang Nila Utama, the seas of Singapore were invaded by shoals of giant swordfishes. These fishes multiplied rapidly and soon became a menace to the King. He was worried for the safety of the villagers who were mostly fishermen. They no longer dared to go out fishing for almost everyday there would be someone killed by the swordfish.
The people began to believe that this was an evil omen and that the kingdom had somehow incurred the wrath of the gods and that they were being punished. The talk soon reached King Paduka Seri's ears and he worried that the people may blame him for the curse, and to prevent any rebellion, he decided to destroy all the swordfishes.
The Battle
The King's army, ready for battle, marched into the sea. Despite being well armed they were defeated by the mighty swordfishes which impaled themselves upon the soldiers. One after another, amidst cries of agony, the men fell, seriously injured or killed. Their cries could be heard from far away. Soon the sea turned red with the blood of the King's army and he was forced to retreat.
The King noticed a young boy taking a special interest in the events and laughing at the outcome. He oredered that the boy be brought to him and after some questioning the boy told the King, "Your Majesty, I was just laughing because I was thinking that it would have been far safer to have formed a barrier from banana tree trunks so that the soldiers would have had some protection behind it." The King was struck by the ingenuity and simplicity of the boy's idea and immediately decided to try it.
Every banana tree on the island was felled in the effort. Soon, the people erected a great wall of banana tree trunks along the beach. When the tide came in again, the swordfish began their attack, however, this time, the swordfish had their long, sharp points stuck into the tree trunks and were unable to free themselves. The islanders were thus able to kill the fish without any harm to themselves. The sea was red with the blood of the swordfish this time and the battle was finally over.
The King's Fear
Everyone on the island celebrated the victory, and the king rewarded the boy for his idea, but the king's ministers were unhappy and jealous. One of them whispered into the king's ear, "If as a boy he is already so clever, imagine what will happen when he grows up. Why...he might even usurp your throne!" Believing the slander, the king immediately ordered the boy to be executed.
Another version of the legend has it that the boy was thrown into the sea near one of the islands south of Singapore. It is said that on certain nights his anguished cries could still be heard in the winds.
Yet in another version it says that the King's men went to a house on top of a hill where the boy was staying. When they reached the house, they found an old crone waiting for them. She said: "I know the reason why you are all here. The boy has saved the kingdom and yet you wish to kill him! You will all pay for this!" At that very moment, the earth opened up and bright red liquid, resembling blood, flowed out. The following day, the hill had turned completely red to remind the people of the kingdom's ingratitude and guilty secret. The people thereafter named the hill Bukit Merah, or Red Hill.
Today the Red Hill area is another one of Singapore's modern districts with high rise apartments, shopping malls and office buildings. |
