WARNING!! Possible Virus CONFICKER.Variant C Threat on 1/4/2009! Measures to be Taken IMMEDIATELY !
Dear Sir / Mdm,
We have received reports on the threat of the Conficker Variant.C virus and the preemptive measures that need to be taken on each COMPUTER / SERVER before the impending threat/attack on 1st April 2009. This virus carries as yet an unknown menace which we have to prepare against and have received notification from our security advisers to do the following actions :
We seek your URGENT and IMMEDIATE attention to perform each check / step below:
1. To check and ensure that the Antivirus Definition File is dated newer
2. To check and confirm for relevant Microsoft security patches on your PC
a. Click START > CONTROL PANEL
b. Double-click ADD\REMOVE PROGRAMS
c. Click on the ‘SHOW UPDATES’ check box, to tick the option
d. Then scroll down the list below looking for the following security patches
i. Security Update for Windows (KB958644)
ii. Security Update for Windows (KB960714) / Hotfix (KB960714)
iii. Security Update for Windows (KB958687)
3. To check and remove any unnecessary sharing of folders
a. Right-click MYCOMPUTER > MANAGE
b. Expand SHARED FOLDER (click the + sign) then click on SHARES
c. The screen on the right will display all shared folders on your computer
d. To delete or stop the sharing – right-click the folder and select STOP SHARING
- You may ignore any of the shared names that end with a $ sign as these are hidden or system shared folders.
4. Perform a FULL SCAN on your computer
