Malaysia likely to field strongest line-up in opening tie against S. Africa

MALAYSIA are expected to field their best team against South Africa today as a “warm-up” ahead of the clash against their stronger rivals Denmark tomorrow.

Malaysia, who had a first day bye, do not intend to take their opening Group C tie lightly when they face the weakest opposition from the four-member South African team.

They are expected to field Lee Chong Wei, Liew Daren, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah.

For world No. 1 Chong Wei, it will be his first test since his recovery from a bout of cold.

He will be playing against KLRC–sponsored Jacob Malieka and is unlikely to be pushed but the Malaysian will focus on getting adjusted to the conditions at the Wuhan Sports Gymnasium Centre.

Malieka will also play in the doubles with Prakash Viyajananth. Another singles player to play a dual role is Willem Viljoen, who will also play in the doubles with Dorian Lance James.

National singles chief coach Rashid Sidek said that the team needed to get a good workout ahead of their clash against Denmark.

“The matches against South Africa will be easy but for us, it is a time to get adjusted to the tournament environment and mentally be ready for the tie against Denmark,” said Rashid.

Rashid said that it would be a test of character for all the first–timers – especially Liew Daren.

“Daren is a reserved person by nature but on court, I want him to let loose and open up his game,” said Rashid. “He should play confidently although his opponent is weaker. Our players have the tendency to display sub-standard performances when their opponents are ranked lower.”

In the doubles, Khim Wah-V Shem will get a chance to test their form.

Said doubles chief coach Tan Kim Her: “It is time for all our players to get serious. The preparation has been good and now they should deliver the goods.”

“The doubles players will come under severe tests against Denmark (tomorrow) and they must be mentally ready to fend off the expected strong assault.”

Malaysia have to beat South Africa and Denmark to top Group C and avoid teams like China, South Korea and Japan in the quarter-finals.
