AirAsia flight QZ8501: six more bodies recovered

Date January 2, 2015 - 12:04PM

Surabaya: Six more bodies of victims from AirAsia flight QZ8501 were pulled from the ocean overnight as a team of 50-plus divers hoped that on Friday, finally, they could descend to the crash site.

The newly found bodies bring the total recovered to 14 and, like the eight already recovered and flown to Surabaya for identification, were found in a search site away from the main fuselage of the plane, having floated there on ocean currents.

They are due to be evacuated on Friday from the port of Pangkalanbun, the closest to the crash site, to Surabaya, where the families and police identification units are waiting for them.

Divers spent a frustrating day at the site of the wreck on New Year's Day. After being encouraged by promising weather in the morning, they returned home empty handed.

A French team from the country's air crash investigation agency BEA will also arrive at the site off the coast of Borneo with equipment designed to detect the sounds emitted by the "black box" flight recorder, Indonesian news agency Antara has reported.

A second meeting of the disaster investigation team on Friday morning is expected to sign off on the identification of four more victims.

The first, victim 001, was identified late on Thursday as Hayati Lutfiah Hamid, and taken back to her Surabaya home by relatives. She was quickly buried in a local cemetery amid a pack of journalists and photographers.

AirAsia QZ8501: Victims' families booted from hotel

The Straits TimesFriday, Jan 02, 2015

Sunu Widiatmoko (C), the president of AirAsia's Indonesian subsidiary, Indonesia-AirAsia, answers media questions during a press conference outside the crisis-centre set up at Juanda International Airport in Surabaya on December 30, 2014.

SURABAYA - Some families of passengers on AirAsia Flight QZ8501 found themselves evicted from their hotel on New Year's Eve because it was fully booked for the new year.

Detik news reported that Hotel Halogen, located near Surabaya's Juanda International Airport, had removed the luggage of the families without informing them.

One family member told Detik that AirAsia Indonesia told them they could stay until yesterday. They were shocked to find their luggage outside their rooms.

A few hours earlier, AirAsia Indonesia chief executive Sunu Widiatmoko said at a press conference that rooms were hard to find on New Year's Eve, and families would be moved yesterday, reported Detik.

A hotel receptionist was quoted as saying that the decision to remove the luggage from the rooms was approved by AirAsia Indonesia.

10.29AM: Forensics say they are having trouble identifying one of the victims because fingerprints are inconclusive, as the body had been exposed to sea water for too long, reports John Leong.

10.21AM: A total of 29 ships and 17 planes are involved in the search for the black box and wreckage on Friday, says BASARNAS. Morning weather and sea conditions are relatively good this morning, with waves between 2.5 and 3 metres - considered relatively safe.

10.16AM: Sixteen bodies have been found, and 10 bodies have been evacuated, says search agency BASARNAS. Eight of the bodies are already in Surabaya, and two of them are in Pangkalan Bun. More bodies are expected today, says BASARNAS.
