The road to the Malaysia Cup final: How did Selangor and Kedah get there?
Selangor
The Red Giants’ start to the group stage was a complete disaster – losing 3-0 at home to troubled Kelantan back in September.
Selangor were torn apart by Gilmar Jose da Silva Filho, who bagged a brace that night, and questions were asked if Selangor’s bid for a record 33rd Malaysia Cup may have to wait another year yet again. Selangor last won the trophy in 2005.
However, a hard-fought 1-0 win away to T-Team in the following match lifted Selangor to within one point of Kelantan and Felda United in Group C. Selangor then suffered another blow after being held to a scoreless match against Felda, but once again collected three points on their travels in their next clash – a 1-0 revenge on Kelantan to take the Red Giants to the top of the standings.
Andik Vermansyah and Ahmad Hazwan Bakri’s goals in the penultimate round against T-Team ensured a 2-1 win to seal top spot in the group as they became the first team to book a place in the last eight. Selangor lost their final match to Felda 3-2, but the result had no bearing on Mehmet Durakovic’s side.
Selangor then met Sarawak in the quarter-finals and it took two nail-biting matches – and the brilliance of goalkeeper Norazlan Razali – to determine the outcome. Afiq Azmi’s 89th-minute winner in the 2-1 win in Kuching proved vital as Sarawak held Selangor 1-1 after Afiq cancelled out Asri Chuchu’s opener in the first half in the return leg at Shah Alam Stadium.

Defending champions Pahang were expected to test Selangor’s mettle in the semi-final but Shahrom Kalam and company came out strongly to hold the Elephants to a 0-0 result in Kuantan before tactically out-playing Zainal Abidin Hassan’s side at home as long-range strikes from Guilherme de Paula and Nazmi Faiz Mansor in each half ensured a 2-0 win on Sunday.
FourFourTwo understands Selangor have lined-up Pahang coach Zainal Abidin Hassan for next season despite Durakovic having a year left on his contract. A Malaysia Cup win on Saturday could leave the management with a tough choice to make.

The road to the Malaysia Cup final: How did Selangor and Kedah get there?
Kedah
Tan Cheng Hoe’s men entered the competition fresh from winning the Malaysia Premier League (MPL) and earning promotion to the top flight next year.
Group A was always going to be tough with the presence of FA Cup winners LionsXII, Malaysia Super League (MSL) club Terengganu and Johor Darul Ta’zim II (JDT II) – the only team to have defeated the Red Eagles at the Darul Aman Stadium this year (a stat that still stands).
Yet the four-time Malaysia Cup winners were unfazed as they defied the odds in the opening two matches. First, LionsXII were held 1-1 at the Jalan Besar Stadium, where Malaysian sides often struggle to make an impression. Kedah then welcomed Terengganu for a match the Turtles will want to quickly forget.
Sandro da Silva Mendonca, who scored against LionsXII in the opener, bagged a hattrick as Kedah put five past Terengganu in the second half. The Brazilian continued his goal-scoring form with another against JDT II in the next match, but as fate would have it, Kedah fell (3-2) for the second time at home to the southern club this year.
The Northerners then defeated LionsXII 2-0 courtesy of a Chidi Edeh brace but hopes of progressing were put in jeopardy after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Terengganu at Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in the penultimate round. They were on the verge of losing out on the last eight after JDT II took a 2-1 lead into the break in the final group match and Terengganu were holding LionsXII out in Kuala Terengganu in the other tie, but a three-goal blitz in 15 second-half minutes gave Kedah a 4-2 win to seal second place.
Kedah did not start the knock-out stages the way they had hoped as they were held 1-1 by PKNS in the quarter-finals. Edeh and Mendonca put Kedah two up in the return leg but a controversial goal – where Pedro Oliveira scored while Kedah were still celebrating and had skipper Baddrol Bakhtiar still in the opposing half – ensured some nervy moments before Syafiq Ahmad’s stoppage-time goal ensured a 3-1 win.

Re-invented Baddrol pulls the strings from a holding role
Kedah were expecting a clash with MSL winners Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) in the semi-finals but a match-up between the two league winners did not materialise after the Southern Tigers were stunned 2-1 by Felda United at the Larkin Stadium in the last eight return leg after a 1-1 opening match.
Without the influential Baddrol, Kedah went behind twice but secured a 2-2 draw at Selayang Stadium. The two away goals were crucial as Felda were forced to attack in the return leg. Felda took the lead in Alor Setar but Edeh equalised just before half-time while Mendonca fired his eighth of the competition in the 51st minute to win 4-3 on aggregate.
A win in the final would further increase Cheng Hoe’s credentials as a coach. Kedah represent the former Malaysian assistant coach’s first stint as a head coach. He also won the 1990 Malaysia Cup as a player with Kedah.

Why Kedah are genuine Malaysia Cup contenders
Darren Goon explains why last year's Malaysia Cup semi-finalists could upset the odds once again and go all the way this year...
Although we should all be familiar with Kedah’s dark horse status by now, their second round demolition of Terengganu, the team that finished fourth in the Super League and had won eight of their last ten matches, was a bit of a surprise. It was the Turtles’ biggest defeat for three years, since losing 6-1 to Kelantan in the 2012 Malaysia Cup group stages.
Last year’s run to the Malaysia Cup semi-finals saw Kedah swat four Super League team aside, but nobody expected a win in such emphatic fashion. Not only was the scoreline notable, but also the manner in which they took a supposedly superior team apart. Here’s how they did it...
Import brilliance
It’s not an understatement to say that Kedah’s Premier League title win was borne out of replacing two of their foreign players in the April transfer window. Attacking midfielders Liridon Krasniqi and Sandro da Silva Mendonça, from Kosovo and Brazil respectively, came in at the expense of defender Lawrence Olum and striker Keith Murtu Nah. The new signings inspired the team's charge from sixth to second place in the space of three matches. In fact, Kedah won 10 of their next 13 matches to rise to the top of the table, a position they held on to for the final seven rounds of the season.
Krasniqi contributed five goals while Sandro plundered nine, including a spectacular hat-trick in the final league match of the season that clinched the trophy. The Brazilian's tally now stands at nine goals in his last four matches after scoring yet another hattrick in half an hour’s play against Terengganu. Given free reign alongside Krasniqi, he scored in the 52nd, 66th, and 82nd minutes, all with his trusty right peg.

Krasniqi and Sandro form a formidable attacking midfield partnership for Kedah
Quantitatively, he was brilliant. Qualitatively, he was just as good. Brazilian attackers are often typecast as flamboyant, tricky players who can delight the crowd, and Sandro produced a display befitting the archetypal Samba superstar. An attempted backheeled pass as early as the third minute set the tone, and he would continue to dazzle with more flicks and tricks throughout the match.
Krasniqi arguably ran the show, not the most straightforward task considering Terengganu’s midfield featured the creative talent of Gustavo Lopez (FourFourTwo’s Midfielder and Signing of the Season), Ashaari Shamsuddin, and Ismail Faruqi. The man has posted three videos (at present) on his Facebook page documenting the “pannas” (commonly known as a nutmeg) he has performed on several poor, unsuspecting local footballers, and he slowly chipped away at his opponents’ composure in the middle with his calmness on the ball. At times it seemed that he was merely walking, and not running, with it! A couple of tasty chips into the box in the first half weren’t finished by Kedah’s forwards, but he contributed the final pass that saw Edeh win a penalty for the second goal, and was extremely influential despite not directly notching a goal or an assist.
Baddrol Bakhtiar's reinvention
Everyone knows Baddrol Bakhtiar. Bursting onto the scene as Kedah won the “Double Treble” almost a decade ago, “Mr. Kedah” is most well-known as a tireless winger, or as an attacking midfielder. Against Terengganu he was deployed in a defensive midfield position, shuttling between the defence and the two foreigners ahead of him in midfield. His first clear contribution in the 5th minute saw him drop very deep to receive the ball from a defender, before belting a Stevie-G-esque Hollywood pass across the pitch and out of play. He continued to take free-kicks, including one in the 27th minute, but otherwise played the role of a defensive midfielder quite well, shutting down Terengganu’s fluid attacking midfield combinations of Lopez, Ashaari, and Ismail, as well as the runs Issey Nakajima-Farran tried to make from deep. All in all, he helped screen a defence that included young rookie Osman Yusoff, restricting his opponents to just one shot on target for the entire match.
Nonetheless, we saw flashes of the regular Baddrol in the second half. He popped up on the right flank in the 62nd minute to whip in a deep cross that Chidi Edeh looped over the bar. The 27-year-old was given more licence to roam late on after Syazwan Zainon was taken off in the 71st minute, having a hand in the final two goals from the right. First, Sandro finished off his low pass in the 82nd minute, before another dinked cross found the head of substitute Alif Fadhil Ismail three minutes from time.

The indefatigable Baddrol has been with Kedah his whole career
Could this be a sign of Baddrol's footballing future? Playing as a withdrawn midfielder, dictating play a la the hippest of registas, signor Andrea Pirlo? He certainly has the passing chops for the task, and a sacrifice is necessary to accommodate twin attacking midfield terrors Krasniqi and Sandro. Who else besides a true-blue Kedah man to take one for the team? Technically, he could conserve energy by sitting deep for most of the game, before switching over to the flanks in the later periods to terrorise poor full-backs left exhausted from tracking the pacey runs of Farhan Roslan or Syazwan Zainon.
Tan Cheng Hoe refuses to shut up shop
At 2-0 up against ten men with twenty minutes to play, most coaches would have played it safe and tried to close the game out. Instead, Tan Cheng Hoe opted to replace a winger (Syazwan Zainon) with a striker (Ahmad Shakir Ali). Kedah scored their third goal a minute later, and Terengganu were soon reduced to nine men after Norshahrul Idlan Talaha trod on the back of Osman Yusoff’s shin. Osman (a centre-back) was replaced by Alif Fadhil Ismail (usually a right-back), and their fourth goal was netted by Sandro after great work by Ahmad Shakir. Their left-back (Shafizan Hashim) was then subbed for a winger (Shazuan Ashraf Mathews), and oh, you know the drill, Alif Fadhil headed in the fifth goal minutes later.
Although it’s probably just a nifty coincidence that Kedah scored their final three goals within minutes after making their substitutions, coach Tan had other defensive options on the bench in Henry Lew and Hanif Mat Dzahir that could have been sent on to steady the ship. Nonetheless, he probably smelt blood against nine men and seized the chance to inflate his side’s goal difference. His decisions to bring on attacking players certainly bore fruit.
Dynamic wingers
One of the main contenders for Man of the Match was probably the tiniest man on the pitch. Farhan Roslan was a menace down the left with his pace, getting past Hafizal Mohamad with ease in the 16th and 20th minutes for some good opportunities. Kedah constantly tried to spring the youngster with quick balls behind the defence, and as a result, Hafizal lasted just 25 minutes before being sent off for a last-man foul on Farhan.
Syazwan, one of the lower profile members of this Kedah team, was another one who stood out. Up against national left-back Zubir Azmi, his link-up play with Sandro was often a joy to behold, and it was this combination that saw the home side finally break the deadlock in the 52nd minute via a quick one-two. Farhan was the player who initiated that move from his position on the left touchline, and in fact, all five of Kedah’s goals originated from passes/crosses from the flanks. Farhan notched the third goal after running inside, while Baddrol assisted the final two with balls in from the right wing.

Syazwan found much joy on the right flank against Terengganu
An impressive youth factory line
Thrust into action due to Bang Seung-hwan’s two-game suspension, Osman Yusoff made his debut for Kedah’s first team two weekends ago in the 1-1 away draw against LionsXII. Although he unfortunately provided the deflection that saw Shahdan Sulaiman’s shot beat Abdul Hadi Hamid, the 21-year-old did enough to keep the striker-less Singaporeans at bay.
His second senior appearance was even more impressive, since he had to deal with two international forwards in Norshahrul Idlan Talaha and Canada’s Issey Nakajima-Farran (who scored nine goals in the Super League). Osman had Norshahrul in his pocket for much of the match, so much so that the frustrated striker eventually saw red for stepping on the young midfielder's leg after he did well to shield the ball out of play for a throw-in.
Undoubtedly, the presence of Kedah’s experienced Mr. Consistent (he’s missed only one game this season) Khairul Helmi Johari alongside him at the heart of the defence was a big help, but for a rookie to step up well against premier opposition is a good sign of things to come.
