Phelps shatters third world mark as Americans dominate
MICHAEL Phelps demolished his third world record in three days yesterday to collect his fourth gold medal of the world championships and strengthen his claims to be the greatest swimmer of all time.
The 21-year-old American slashed almost a second off his own world record to win the 200m individual medley final after setting the best ever time for 200m freestyle and 200m butterfly the two previous days.
The US posted two more world records in the Susie O扤eill pool to continue their domination of the championships in the lead-up to next year抯 Beijing Olympics.
Natalie Coughlin, Dana Vollmer, Lacey Nymeyer and Katie Hoff combined to smash Germany抯 4x200m freestyle world record and Leila Vaziri equalled her 24-hour old time of 28.16 to win the 50m backstroke gold medal.
Italy and Canada both collected their first golds of the championships when Filippo Magnini and Brent Hayden dead-heated in the men抯 100m freestyle final.
The pair touched the wall in the identical time of 48.43 seconds to share the honour of being the fastest men in water and producing the first dead-heat in any event at a world swimming championship.
Jessicah Schipper provided Australia抯 fifth gold medal of the championships with an all-the-way win in the women抯 200m butterfly final ahead of American Kimberley Vandenberg and Poland抯 Olympic champion Otylia Jedrzejczak.
Phelps is chasing an unprecedented eight world titles in Melbourne and few would bet against him after his amazing performances over the first five days of competition.
Phelps has been a serial record breaker since he broke his first world mark as a 15-year-old in 2001 |

Phelps wins 6th gold at swimming worlds
By BETH HARRIS, AP Sports Writer
Sat Mar 31,
MELBOURNE, Australia - Michael Phelps stayed on track for a record gold-medal haul at the world championships, edging out American teammate Ian Crocker by 0.05 seconds to win the 100-meter butterfly Saturday night.
Gold medalist USA's Michael Phelps, left,
and silver medalist USA's Ian Crocker
Phelps is 6-for-6 with two races remaining. His latest gold tied Australian Ian Thorpe's record from the 2001 worlds in Japan.
But Phelps failed to set a world record for the first time in five nights.
"I'm definitely starting to feel it (fatigue)," he said. "I've got to get some food and some sleep, and hopefully tomorrow I'll run off adrenaline. I need to come back and do two solid races."
Still, it was another dominating night for the United States.
The Americans won four of the six finals, including 1-2 finishes in the men's 100 fly and men's 50 freestyle. They have a leading 31 medals, including 17 gold with one night remaining. Australia is second with 17 medals and seven golds.
As the two-time defending champion and world-record holder, Crocker was the one guy who could've stopped Phelps' gold rush. But it didn't happen.
"It's hard to get up and slay the dragon every time," he said.
Crocker was first at the turn, with Phelps third |

Thorpe maintains innocence, vows to clear name
Retired Olympic swimming champion Ian Thorpe says he never "cheated" during his decorated career by using performance-enhancing drugs.
Thorpe told a media conference in Melbourne this afternoon he had no idea why a random doping test, taken in May last year, had produced an irregular result but insisted it was not because of banned substances.
Last night the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) confirmed unusually high levels of testosterone and luteninising hormone were found in the sample.
ASADA has told Thorpe he did not fail the doping test.
"I have never cheated and I pride myself on my record," Thorpe said.
"I firmly believe I am clean, I have never cheated and have always fulfilled my obligations.
"My reputation has already been tarnished and it is the hardest thing to take. There is no ideal outcome to all of this, but I will win."
Yesterday French sports newspaper L'Equipe claimed Thorpe had returned the irregular result when the test was conducted.
The paper reported that ASADA had initially decided to close its file on the test because of insufficient evidence, but world swimming's governing body FINA had then decided to appeal the ASADA decision.
ASADA insisted the case had never been closed.
Thorpe said he was in complete shock when told of the report yesterday.
"I was physically shaking in my room yesterday," he said. "It is gut wrenching, it really is."
Thorpe said he was alarmed that news of his adverse analysis had been leaked and his name tarnished.
"I am deeply alarmed that the test was leaked to the press. It jeopardises the whole integrity of the testing procedure and it is a serious breach of what we all sign up for," he said.
"I have been deprived of this privacy protection and I can only speculate to the motives."
Thorpe, who was joined at the media conference by his lawyer Tony O'Reilly, said he was considering legal action.
"There are two aspects to this. Firstly, the test itself and the legalities regarding my privacy and reputation," he said.
"I have never been notified of anything like this and the media interest in this is huge and it's hard to deal with."
Thorpe, who dominated world swimming for eight years, said his reputation had been hurt and it was important now to get the facts out in the public domain.
"I was always remembered as a hero to a lot of people when I was swimming and I want it to remain," he said.
"I am confident that the image of me will remain in people's minds, but this is a pretty serious business with scientists and medical people involved and there is a process for this to go through.
"But I am shocked how long all this has taken."
Thorpe said his doctor would provide more information to ASADA and he was confident that medical and scientific evidence would prove he was clean. |
