2011 MotoGP calendar announced
MotoGP commercial rights holder Dorna Sports has released an 18-round calendar for the 2011 World Championship season. As reported earlier today, Motorland Aragón becomes a permanent fixture as the fifteenth race of the season. Other changes see Estoril move forward to May and Catalunya return to a June slot.

Lorenzo able to pick up title at Sepang
Although there may still be four races to run in 2010, Jorge Lorenzo is mathematically able to collect his maiden MotoGP crown in Malaysia this weekend. The Spaniard’s task has been made all the more easier now, following fellow countryman Dani Pedrosa’s collarbone-breaking crash in Japan last weekend.
Heading into the ultra-humid Sepang race, the Yamaha rider leads his Honda counterpart by an ample 68 points and is now finely poised to become Spain’s second title winner, after Àlex Crivillé in 1999.
“All I am thinking about is Sunday and if I can win the title...it's been one of the dreams of my life and it would be great to get it here at Sepang,” commented 23-year-old Lorenzo, who hails from Palma de Mallorca.
“I like Malaysia a lot and I've done so many kilometres there testing on my M1, plus I have great memories from winning the 250 championship there in 2007.
“The track is long and modern but the weather can be a problem because it can be too hot and rain can also cause problems; last year was a bit crazy with the rain and then I had to start from last on the grid! I would definitely prefer it to be dry this year.
“The team and I will focus in the same way we have all season, working hard from Friday and with the goal of podium or victory. We hope for the best result we can get.” |

‘The happiest day in my life’ – Champion Lorenzo
Jorge Lorenzo has become Spain’s first MotoGP World Champion since Àlex Crivillé in 1999, by finishing third after starting from pole position in Malaysia on Sunday. Having battled with team-mate Valentino Rossi and Honda’s Andrea Dovizioso in the last knockings, the Mallorcan eventually elected to play it safe.
With closest challenger Dani Pedrosa out of action once again this weekend due to his broken collarbone, Lorenzo’s winning of the title ends a two-year victory streak for Rossi, who triumphed in a race today for the first time after returning from a broken leg.
“I was really impressed to be at the front and to not lose any time until the end of the race,” delighted Yamaha rider Lorenzo commented.
“When the tyres started sliding I thought to myself, 'Today we have to finish the race and get the maximum a rider can get in the motorcycling world…’
“Today is the happiest day in my life and we have to celebrate it.” |
