France make positive start in Six Nations campaign

EDINBURGH: France made a positive start to the defence of their Six Nations title with a 27-6 win over Scotland at Murrayfield on Sunday.

Man of the match Vincent Clerc scored two tries and fellow winger Julien Malzieu added a third.

Scrum half Jean-Baptiste Elissalde converted all three and France also benefited from the goal kicking of centre Damien Traille who landed two penalties.

It was an impressive performance from a new-look France side which dominated the back row battle and moved the ball much more effectively behind the scrum to deliver coach Marc Lievremont victory in his first match in charge.

揟he team spirit held out right to the end. I was very pleased with the scoreline but I was not surprised that we managed to control so much of the game,

Rugby/Six Nations: Cipriani shadow over Wilkinson's big day

England's star flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson has equalled
Neil Jenkins' record of 1,090 points and will claim the
record all for himself with his first score at Murrayfield,
Edinburgh in today's Calcutta Cup clash with Scotland.

EDINBURGH: It should have been Jonny Wilkinson's day.

Danny Cipriani.

Instead today's Calcutta Cup clash with Scotland is set to be overshadowed by the row over England coach Brian Ashton's handling of Danny Cipriani, the youngster who has been anointed as Wilkinson's heir apparent.

England's next big star in waiting, who should have been making his first start for his country, will miss the match after failing to sidestep a photographer waiting for him when he emerged from a London nightclub just after midnight on Thursday.

The result was an unceremonious return to the sidelines and, as Cipriani spends the weekend contemplating what might have been, Wilkinson will almost certainly be entering the history books.

The International Rugby Board ruled this week that the star flyhalf's 20 points for the British Lions in a match against Argentina in May 2005 should count towards his total Test haul.

As a result, Wilkinson has already equalled Neil Jenkins' record of 1,090 points and will claim it all for himself with his first score at Murrayfield.

If it had not been for the Cipriani rumpus, England would have been heading north in confident mood, having disposed of France so clinically in Paris two weeks ago.

But there must be a question mark over how morale in the camp will be affected by Ashton's decision to take a very tough line with the 20-year-old Cipriani.

Ian McGeechan, the former Scotland and Lions coach who is now in charge of Cipriani's development at Wasps, is among those who believes Ashton has got it wrong, describing England's response to a minor misdemeanour as "very harsh".

"Danny, at worst, was naive in his actions but no more than that," McGeechan said.

Ashton may disagree, but there is no doubt that he will now be praying that Iain Balshaw, recalled to the side after initially being dropped to allow Cipriani to come in, will demonstrate greater confidence under the high-ball than he has done in his recent appearances for England.

With Scotland having scored just one try in three defeats so far in this year's tournament, Ashton will be expecting his men to come away with a comfortable win.

- DUBLIN: Wales face arguably their toughest encounter so far in this Six Nations today when the visitors' quest for a Grand Slam continues against Ireland here at Croke Park.

Yet to listen to Wales's former Ireland coach Warren Gatland, all the pressure is on the hosts, who are one of several sides in the chasing pack with a shot at winning the Championship.

But Wales, the only unbeaten side in the 2008 Six Nations, must know the title - where they have a huge points difference advantage following their thrashing of Italy last time out - is theirs to lose.

Not that Gatland acknowledged the point. "Ireland are the favourites but they struggle to handle the tag of favouritism," said the New Zealander, axed by Ireland seven years ago and replaced by his then deputy Eddie O'Sullivan - accused of ousting Gatland - who has been in charge ever since.

Gatland said this week he was happy to let bygones be bygones but nevertheless, typically, added he'd been "burnt" by his experience of working with O'Sullivan.

Wales, with wing Shane Williams providing the cutting edge to a gifted back division, have been the team to watch this season.

But there is a feeling that, with England losing their heads during Gatland's first match in charge and Scotland and Italy not putting up the fiercest of fights they've yet to be tested fully. - AFP

Asas juara liga ragbi Selangor

dulu ada kawan aku ajak berlatih dgn cobra... tapi aku mmg tak build nak jadi pemain rugby.. tengok aku suker ler...!! spitfire main rugby kan .. :victory:

Ragbi: Empat pasukan terbaik tepati ramalan
