'Nishabd' gets lukewarm response

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IANS

The initial response to Ram Gopal Varma's 'Nishabd', in which Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan romances a girl 40 years younger, has not been as overwhelming as expected, but trade pundits say it will pick up over the weekend.

'It is quite an impressive film. However, the occupancy rate today was 60 percent. But there are huge advance bookings for Saturday and Holi,' Saurabh Varma, vice president Programming & Distribution of Inox Leisure Ltd, told IANS on phone from Mumbai.

Saurabh added that the reviews would help the film's fate at the box office.

The film, based on 'Lolita' by Vladimir Nabokov, has newcomer Jiah Khan pitted opposite Amitabh.

'Amitabh's performance has been hugely appreciated,' said Saurabh.

In Delhi, bookings for the evening shows have been encouraging compared to the morning ones.

'So far, the response is not so encouraging. The collection was only 50 percent in the first half of the day,' said a source at PVR Cinemas.

Varma's film got into legal problems with Kanungo Media, producer of a Bangla film with the same name. It filed a case against Varma's alleging that the Bollywood director had announced his film just a week after the screening of his Bangla film at a film festival. He requested that a stay order be put on the film's release.

'If we stay the release of the film it would be a loss to the film producer as he has spent crores of rupees on advertisement,' said Chief Justice M.K. Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Khanna in their judgement Thursday.

Earlier, on Feb 27, Justice A.K. Sikri dismissed Kanungo Media's suit on the ground that it had approached the court very late.

'You should have approached the court immediately,' he observed.

Justice Sikri added that law was in Kanungo Media's favour but since he had approached the court late, it was not possible to pass any injunction at this stage.

Critics have appreciated the film saying that Varma has handled a taboo theme with maturity and sensitivity. But they feel the subject has its limitations and would appeal to a very a small section of moviegoers because this kind of relationship is still not acceptable in Indian society.

Darling remakes ready before the original
By IndiaFM News Bureau, March 3, 2007 - 07:19 IST

This will probably be the first time that the remake versions of a film are completed even before the original film is shot.

While Ram Gopal Varma抯 Darling is yet to be completed, the remake versions of the film are already shot. The film is remade in Tamil and Telugu languages and both the versions of the film are directed by Ram Gopal Varma抯 assistant director Kona Venkat.

Madhavan plays the lead role in both, the Telugu and Tamil versions of the film. He has all praise for Ramu. He says that Ram Gopal Varma readily agreed to allow them to remake Darling. He gave them the liberty to make changes in the original script of the film. Shamita Shetty plays a ghost in the remake versions and Madhavan is highly impressed by her performance.

It is said that the Tamil and Telugu versions will be released simultaneously along with RGV抯 Darling. Darling stars Fardeen Khan, Esha Deol and Isha Koppikar in lead roles.

Subhash K Jha speaks about Nishabd
By Subhash K. Jha, March 3, 2007 - 01:34 IST

Finally, there's just the man and his looming loneliness. He could end it right now. But he chooses to live on, so that he could live with the memories of lost love for a bit longer.

Ram Gopal Varma's Nishabd leaves you speechless. Its pulsating but humane play of light and shade within the sprawling gorgeous greenery of a tea estate is the closest you're going to come to passion of a renaissance painting in Hindi cinema.

Varma's mastery over visuals that tell a prowling tale of reclamation and retribution has never been in doubt. Those qualities that have always made his cinema look unique, are here applied to a theme, emotion and passions that have so far remained forbidden to Varma's range of vision.

In telling a 60-year old 'happily' married man's sudden and inexplicable passion for his daughter's 18- year old friend, Ramu goes for the jugular.

The luminous language of Nishabd makes you grope for new words to describe the whole experience of watching a film that unfolds like the petals of a wild but tender flower.

From pistols to petals厃ou never thought Varma had it in him. He makes the transition with the rugged fluency of a man who has seen it all, done it all and portrayed it all.

Varma now gets into the introspective mode. Nishabd is a brooding though never dark look at an autumnal life that suddenly discovers passion and excitement. The eruption of passion is manifested in little but luminous things like the sprout of a gushing water fountain, or the atypical laughter of a patriarch who has just discovered the clandestine pleasure of playing footsie under the table with his daughter's friend.

The confusions, turmoils, adventure and, yes, playful expeditions into topographical and emotional areas that no Hindi film has dared to visit, make thisVarma's most accomplished film to date.

Forget the bravura technique-infested gangsterism of Satya, even the lyrical violence of Company gets left behind. In Nishabd, Varma takes cinema steps further from the folds of the familiar to stand perched on the edge of an emotional precipice of passion where anything can happen.

Never afraid to take risks Ramu plunges straight into a fear-filled heart of an aging man who suddenly feels emotions that he never knew existed within him. It's a double-deckered process of discovery for the director and his protagonist. Both venture into an unlit territory of bright smothered passions with the arresting aplomb of a master filmmaker collaborating with the performing maestro. You've seen Varma ferret out a unique performance from Mr Bachchan in Sarkar. Nothing prepares you for the serenely flowing emotions that spill out of the maestro's eyes, face and entire being as he grapples with his uncontrollable feelings for the fey and feisty Jiah. Here's a performance that sucks you into its emotions while remaining at the subtlest range of expressions.

If moments make a monument of eternity in the cosmic scheme, then in Nishabd Ramu has achieved that synthesis of time and experience that gives human relationships that spin of eternity.

Technical soundness is of course a pre-condition and a hallmark of Varma's cinema. In Nishabd, he applies his trademark technique(prowling restless camera movements , unpredictable shot divisions, characters caught at uncomfortable emotional and physical angles

Ekta now wants a good figure

Ekta Kapoor has decided to concentrate on attaining a svelte figure and go slow on churning out soaps. She is all set to go on a crash diet, with the aim of losing 7 kgs in the next two months.

"I am going on a diet from this week. I need to lose at least seven kilos. At this moment I intend to give priority to my slimming plans over my career. In the next two months, I will lose seven kilos. That's a promise I've made to myself," says Ekta.

What prompted this drastic decision? Apparently when Ekta was in Bali with her friends for the New Year's, everyone just slipped into their swimming costumes and short skirts with the exception of Ekta cos she couldn't! That's when she began thinking about losing weight seriously.

"I'm not one to let challenges go by. As a child I was F-A-T, there were no two ways about it. If I had had the determination to become thin then, I can now manage to be really slim quite easily. Please wish me luck," she quips.

I use telepathy on KBC: SRK

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, the new superstar host of quiz show "Kaun Banega Crorepati" (KBC), says his prime concern is not so much TV ratings but to keep contestants happy.

Shah Rukh, who faced a lot of scepticism after taking over from Amitabh Bachchan as the host of KBC, also says he knows from the audience reaction that he is doing a good job.

"I want everyone to win from here. Apart from being a superstar here, I feel they should win some money and they should feel proud of their achievements," Shah Rukh told in an interview about the show on STAR Plus.

"They are hungry, as some of them have tried for years to make it here. I would like them to go back with the feeling that having the hunger for knowledge and success has its benefits when you come to KBC.

"I should go out of here thinking - life well spent because I got to meet so may people and I am very emotional about that part. I have been tough all my life, but yes, I am a softie when it comes to KBC."

He refused to comment on the ratings of KBC saying he didn't understand the business aspect of either his films or his television show.

"To be really honest I am not from this business. As close as TV business is to my film business, genuinely, for the past 17 years, I have never looked at the collections of my films. These are things that are not in my control and I don't think I have a right to comment on them because I am not a trade analyst.

"I wouldn't like to talk about television because I have even less knowledge about it. I've been told that the TRPs are awful, I've been told that the TRPs are picking up, I've been told that they are steady now and I've even been told that we are the leading show on television right now."

He said the numbers can get bad again, but he, producer Siddharth Basu and Sameer Nair, who conceptualised KBC, were making sure that the entertainment aspect of the show remained intact.

"We'll see through making sure that we don't slip on the entertainment aspect. I have a great time, which I think is quite apparent in the way I conduct the show."

The superstar also added that he didn't have to look at the figures to understand the performance on his show.

"I can feel it for I have worked long enough in the business of entertainment to know when something works. I can see it on the faces of 500 people who come here, I can see it on the faces of the contestants and I can even see it on the faces of the people who are watching television at home."

But, he added, screaming headlines made it difficult to ignore anything about KBC.

"It's difficult not knowing the numbers because all the news channels are showing it. The whole day and night they are telling you about it. KBC was even in the newspapers and their headlines, which is amazing because if it makes it to the headlines, it means it is an important show."

He admitted that he didn't mind leading his contestants on when they were unsure of the answer.

"I believe in telepathy and I think it really works. There was a guy who I really liked and who was very intelligent. He was doing very well on the show and he came to a question where he thought it was not going to happen. I started thinking and I putting it to his mind that this is the answer. I wanted him to get the right answer."

Kareena left due to Hrithik!

Hrithik Roshan had been having second thoughts about doing Zoya Akhtar抯 directorial debut Kismat Talkies. It抯 now official: Roshan Jr has opted out of Zoya抯 film.

As if that wasn抰 bad enough, co-star Kareena Kapoor too has given the project a miss.

Producer Ritesh Sidhwani (who runs Excel Entertainment along with partner and Zoya抯 brother Farhan Akhtar) had earlier told us that they would start filming in May 2007 as Kareena had given dates from then on, but then Hrithik started demanding changes in the script making Zoya go hunting for a new hero. It is learnt that she spoke to Akshay Kumar, but he too gave her the cold shoulder.

Apparently Kareena had allotted the same dates to Socha Na Tha director Imtiaz Ali抯 next film. A source says, 揙nce Hrithik opted out, Kareena decided not to do the film either.

When contacted, Imtiaz excused himself from telling us when he is starting his film with Kareena. 揑 am sitting with some people. Let抯 talk later,

Amitabh Bachchan speaks to Subhash K Jha on Nishabd & related matters
By Subhash K. Jha, March 3, 2007 - 01:58 IST

Ramu's aesthetics in Nishabd aren't to be denied
Right. If you've seen the film you'd know this isn抰 the Ram Gopal Varma of Sarkar. It's hard to believe he has come with something so sensitive. So far he has made gangster films like Sarkar and Satya.

Did you have apprehensions about doing the film?
None at all. I agreed in five minutes to do the film. At this stage of my life I think it's my duty as an actor to do as many kinds of roles as possible. When one is younger, the lead role comes with commercial constraints. When that weight has gone from one's head, one feels freer. Yes, I'm freed from the pressures of commercialism. After Eklavya, Nishabd is a total departure from whatever I've done. Then there's Cheeni Kum which is a quirky satire. The audience has now matured. Of course there's a big audience for the popcorn movie like Dhoom 2. But there's a growing audience wanting to think and introspect during a film. That's how a Nishabd is born.

Of course there's a big audience for the popcorn movie like Dhoom 2. But there's a growing audience wanting to think and introspect during a film. That's how a Nishabd is born
Did Nishabd allow you to be more adventurous than any other role?
The plot presented a difficult situation. I'm just happy with the way Ramu presented it. It's all up to the director. Ramu has always given me the freedom to express myself openly, to interpret his brief in any way I want. Sometimes the shot is over. But he doesn't stop the camera. And you just have to carry on acting.

Ramu always surprises me with the way he puts together my expressions on the editing table
I think all your directors give you that freedom?
Well, yeah, to some extent. But Ramu has always given me that extra space. Invariably there's a lot of give-and-take on his sets. He always surprises me with the way he puts together my expressions on the editing table.

B-grade film made on actress Parveen Babi
By IndiaFM News Bureau, March 3, 2007 - 08:27 IST

Believe it or get aghast but its true. A B-grade film is being made on the life and career or Bollywood actress of yesteryears Parveen Babi, allegedly named Parveen Bobby.

Following the footsteps of Mohit Suri抯 Shiney-Kangana starrer Woh Lamhe, Parveen Bobby will also depict the tragic life of Parveen Babi. However, those who have come across the posters of Parveen Bobby, consider it as a matter of shame and insult to the actress, as it is a B-grade film. The posters of the film show a semi-nude actress and are quite appalling. The tagline of the film reads, 揑t is a story of a girl who sacrificed her career, family, body and even life for true love

Salman Khan bails out Boney Kapoor again
By IndiaFM News Bureau, March 3, 2007 - 03:17 IST

True stories about Salman Khan's largesse continue to pour in. Not only does he continue to do films free of fee for friends and filmmakers, he also forgets and forgives very easily.

Two years ago, Salman pulled Boney's doddering production house out of the red by agreeing to do an extended cameo in No Entry. Just when Boney couldn't stop thanking Salman for his generosity things soured between the two when Salman backed out of his verbal commitment to put in yet another extended guest appearance in Boney's Milenge Milenge.

But now Salman is all set to once again play saviour to Boney's production company. Salman plays the lead in Boney Kapoor's remake of the Tamil-Telugu blockbuster Pokhri.

Says a source close to both Boney and Salman, "Salman couldn't keep his promise of doing Milenge Milenge because of differences with the film's lead pair Shahid Kapoor and Kareena. But it bothered him that Boney had to suffer for no fault of his. At the first given opportunity he made amends with Boney by agreeing to play the lead in the remake of Pokhri." Apparently no money has been discussed.

Continues the source, "This isn抰 the first occasion when Salman has stood by a project on humanitarian grounds. After Nikhil Advani left Karan Johar Salman was the only hero who supported Nikhil's Salaam-e-Ishq. The other big stars rolled into the film only after Salman agreed

By IndiaFM News Bureau, March 3, 2007 - 03:46 IST

In the 70抯, Shashi Kapoor enjoyed the title of being one of most handsome actors in Bollywood and now, when he has turned 70, the actor has become an inspiration for artists.

Recently, a dozen artists painted his countenance on their canvases at JJ School of Arts. Bollywood personalities like director Amol Palekar and singer Sudesh Bhosle too made sketches of the blue eyed actor. Amol Palekar is an alumnus of JJ School of Arts while Sudesh Bhosle says that he used to paint movie posters with his father in his earlier days and sketching Kapoor has been of interest to him since then.

Shashi Kapoor has taken a break from the film industry since a decade now. He was last seen on the big screen in the film Salma Pe Dil Aa Gaya in 1997. Besides films, Shashi Kapoor has also been actively involved in theatre.

Govinda visits Sufi shrine, temples in Rajasthan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IANS

Bollywood actor and MP Govinda seemed to be on a religious tour of Rajasthan, having visited a Sufi shrine and two temples in the state in the past few days.

He offered prayers at Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti's Dargha in Ajmer, over 140 km from here, Friday.

"Govinda, accompanied by his wife and children, spent over 20 minutes at the shrine and offered a chadar and flowers," a shrine committee member told IANS.

After visiting the shrine Govinda drove to the Hindu holy city of Pushkar in the same district and offered prayers at Lord Brahma's temple.

On Thursday, Govinda along with his family had visited the Salasar temple in Churu district, over 170 km from here.

Dressed in a golden kurta-pyjama and a red colour stole, Govinda first chanted Vedic mantras with the pundits after which he was given prasad or holy offering.

Salasar Balaji being a shrine dedicated to Lord Hanuman, a photograph of the monkey god and a shawl were presented to Govinda, a local priest at the temple said.

"During the prayers Govinda also offered a coconut at the temple premises to make his wishes come true," the priest said.

He said the film star also expressed his desire to revisit the temple soon. Govinda was also given a traditional welcome and was garlanded by the temple administration.

Huge crowds had gathered at temple premises to have a glimpse of the film star. People started gathering as news spread of Govinda's visit. Of course, he didn't dishearten his fans and gave them an opportunity to click pictures with him.

Hollywood director Bannerman scouting for Indian actress
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, March 02, 2007]

Bill Bannerman, an AD with legendary Clint Eastwood for films like Bridges of Madison County, A Perfect World and Absolute Power, is directing a feature with Clint Eastwood's blessing. Its called "Unveiled" - a film about a Muslim Woman who has two husbands and a lover.

It's a twisted film noir/ sexy thriller/dark drama - and the first Hollywood film to feature a Female Muslim Protagonist. According to him, "Behind the dark burkha, there lies a sexy, manipulative victim, who's dangerous as well as in grave danger".

He's looking at all possibilities in casting the lead role - Hillary Swank, Penelope Cruz have shown interest, but they want the actress to be a South Asian or from the Middle East who'll understand the character of a Muslim woman from the Middle East and lend a degree of authenticity in terms of accent, body language, knowledge of customs, etc.

Clint Eastwood's entire cast of the Oscar nominated "Letters From Iwo Jima" was from Japan and Babel has actors from Morocco, Mexico, Japan playing characters from that region, and this signals the acceptance of actors from different ethnic groups and countries in mainstream Hollywood. Bill has been looking at several actresses from the region and is coming to India to finalize an actress.

But whoever it is, it will be one of the most monumental casting decisions for the Indian film Industry as it means an entry into the Clint Eastwood camp, and also the lead role in a Hollywood film.

About Bill Bannerman

He has been Clint Eastwood's AD and Second Unit Director. He has won Director's Guild of America Oscar for best AD for "Unforgiven" which went on to win Oscars for best director and Best Film. He has done four films with Clint that includes - Bridges of Madison County, A Perfect World and Absolute Power.

He has been Development Executive for 'Payback', 'Mission Impossible' and 'Star Trek: First Contact' and also the Executive Producer for: 'The Grudge 2' and 'Walking Tall'. Moreover, he has also been an Assistant Director for movies like 'The Hulk', 'Another Stakeout', 'Alive' and 'The Crush'

3 composers create a hat-trick in 'Hat Trick'
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, March 03, 2007]

There have been instances of numerous composers coming together to belt a number for a film. There have also been instances when 2 or more composers have worked together on a single song. But one can't remember when was the last time when different composers came together to work on different departments - composing, writing and singing - for a single number.

Something like this has been achieved in the number 'I Am Coming Home' for the film 'Hat Trick'. The song has three composers coming together in different capacities to create a song. While Pritam is the person responsible for coming up with an overall score, Roop Kumar Rathod, a singer-composer in his own right, has rendered this beautiful melodious number while Vishal Dadlani [of Vishal Shekhar duo], prominently a composer but also known for writing and singing, has penned the lyrics.

Now isn't this some kind of 'hat trick' in itself?
