More episodes on tap for locally filmed drama
Wilmington's film community got an early Christmas present this week when The CW announced it wants eight more episodes of One Tree Hill.
That extends the initial 13-episode order from The CW to a full 21-episode season. It also means 125 workers get to keep their jobs, said Bill Vassar, executive vice president of Screen Gems Studios.
The announcement seems to level out what has been a roller coaster ride for the locally filmed teen drama series.
Just before the fourth and current season began filming in July, cast and crew felt more than the normal anguish associated with waiting for another season pickup. The WB, One Tree Hill's home for three seasons, had merged with competing network UPN, and the show's future on the new CW network looked iffy..
In the 2005/2006 season, One Tree Hill ranked behind 15 other WB and UPN shows. It averaged 2.8 million viewers per night, according to Nielsen Media Research.
When The CW finally announced in May that it wanted 13 episodes of One Tree Hill, fears began to erode.
As time passed, the future began to look brighter for One Tree Hill.
So far this season, the show has averaged 3.3 million viewers, gaining about a half-million more devotees. And airing after the popular America's Next Top Model on Wednesday nights, it has become the fifth most popular show on The CW.
It's also seen a 5 percent increase among adults 18-34, and a 4 percent increase among women ages 18-34, a valued target audience, according to the network.
Numbers don't tell every side of the story, however. Real people living in Wilmington depend on the production to provide for their families.
"I think it's great for obvious reasons - I mean, I will have my job longer. And I think it validates the show with the network and validates our work," said Neil Hyman, who's worked as transportation coordinator for all four seasons. "For now, this show has really kept the studio (Screen Gems) running."
Cast members might be fixtures on televisions across the United States, but by now they've also become regulars at businesses around Wilmington.
"It's always great to find out you still have a job," said James Lafferty, who plays high school basketball star Nathan Scott, in an e-mail.
"I'm definitely looking forward to shooting the rest of this season and being able to stay in Wilmington for that much longer."
Cast and crew will wrap production on the fourth season in April, Vassar said.
After the newly extended season ends, however, it will be time for One Tree Hill to go back up for review. But some are feeling a bit more secure already.
Vassar said the show will have produced 88 episodes by the end of this season, only 12 away from an even 100, which is usually what is needed for a show to attractive for syndication.
"This gives the studios another incentive to add another season," Vassar said.

x sabo ank abih kan semlm dah layan sampai episod 18 eheh. pastuh bleh sambung donlod season 4 yeayyy... |
