Malaysia banking on Kien Keat-Eei Hui to spring surprises

PETALING JAYA: Experienced doubles shuttlers Koo Kien Keat and Chin Eei Hui are not only considered as Malaysia’s secret weapons in the Commonwealth Games mixed doubles competition but they are also being counted on to bring back the spotlight on the mixed doubles department in the national team.

Kien Keat-Eei Hui will be making their debut as a pair in the Games together with youngsters Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying in the individual event.

In the recent training and coaching structural changes, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have decided to dissolve the mixed doubles department.

Instead of focusing strictly on mixed doubles, the players will now to be involved in men’s and women’s doubles play too.

Jeremy Gan is still the mixed doubles coach but he now trains the players for one session daily instead of the usual twice a day.

Jeremy admitted that it would be a shot in the arm for the mixed doubles department if Kien Keat-Eei Hui or Peng Soon-Liu Ying could end a Commonwealth Games gold drought for Malaysia.

“The presence of Kien Keat-Eei Hui will add excitement to the mixed doubles competition. They may not have played as a pair but they have enough experiences to challenge the others,” said Jeremy.

“Their opponents will be put in a spot because they will not really know what to expect from Kien Keat-Eei Hui. We hope that they will spring surprises.”

Jeremy added that Peng Soon-Liu Ying had showed marked improvement in their game after a second-round defeat at the world championships in Paris last month.

“Liu Ying was troubled with a knee problem but her condition is much better now. Peng Soon is also more focused now. Physically, they are better and it all now boils down to how much they can cope with the pressure,” he said.

The mixed doubles in New Delhi will be evenly contested with England banking on Nathan Robertson-Jenny Wallwork and Anthony Clark-Gabrielle White.

India will pin their hopes on V.Diju-Jwala Gutta while Singapore will bank on Yao Jie-Chayut Triyachart.

Malaysia’s best achievement in the mixed doubles was at the 2002 Manchester Games with Eei Hui-Chew Choon Eng winning the silver.

Kien Keat will also play in the men’s doubles with Tan Boon Heong and should not face any problems to win the title. But Eei Hui is expected to have a tougher time in a partnership with youngster Woon Khe Wei in the women’s doubles.

Our athletes living in the true spirit of the Games

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian athletes have embraced the spirit of the Commonwealth Games by not making a big hue and cry over host India’s last-minute efforts to make their stay in the Games Village as comfortable as possible.

The bulk of the Malaysian contingent arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday and chef-de-mission Tan Sri Abdul Halil Abdul Mutalib gave the thumbs up to the athletes for adapting quickly to the environment.

“It all went smoothly for us. Every one checked into the Village without any problems. The validation of the athletes accreditation went well too. They slept soundly,” said Abdul Halil in a telephone interview yesterday.

“They also showed good appetite and ate well at the well-managed cafeteria. They went about their businesses as far as their preparation for the Games was concerned.

“There were some teething problems like the long wait for their luggage to be cleared due to security procedures but our athletes took the well. I am pleased with the good spirit showed by all our athletes.”

India have been scrambling to restore their pride and dignity as far as being the good hosts.

There had been negative reports on the Games Village, which was deemed unfit for the athletes. And there had been complaints over sub-standard quality toilets, poor construction of the facilities and filthy conditions.

Abdul Halil hoped that the Malaysian athletes would soar high despite adversities in the Games.
